FEBRUARY IS PEACE & CONFLICT PREVENTION/RESOLUTION MONTH
***Graphics by Rtn. Debbie Vance BC CANADA
February 1st 2019
G ‘day
January is over and we are into February. Where has the time gone? It is that very busy time of the year when we have training for 2019-2020 with DGE John McKenzie and his team. All begins at PETS
in Young on March 2nd.
DGE John and Fayeh McKenzie have returned from the Governor training and the Rotary International
Institute in San Diego and by all accounts John and Fayeh are raring to get going!
HOWEVER we still have 5 months to go in our year with Barry Rassin Be The Inspiration! The next 5
months will be full on and flat out with the Griffith 2019 D9700 Conference.
Paul Murray our Communications Director has put together a brochure which covers all three main
events leading up to and including the conference in Griffith. You have received this via email and I
include the cover page so that you can easily get to where you want to on our D9700 web site.
I am buoyed by the meetings held recently though your Assistant Governors and Presidents. Susan
and I look forward to catching up with you in Griffith and on the PARADE at some stage.

I. PRESIDENT BARRY RASSIN’S MESSAGE FEBRUARY 2019
In my travels over the past year, I've visited many strong, vibrant clubs and districts that are
transforming their communities. When I attend their meetings, I can feel the energy. When I meet
their members, I can see they are people of action. And when I look at their communities, I can recognize the impact of their work.
I've also visited communities with Rotary clubs that were hardly more than social clubs. It shouldn't
ever be that way. Fortunately, there's a simple approach that I believe can help revitalize any club. I'd like to challenge every Rotary club to come up with at least one high-impact service project. Each
club already has the potential, the resources, to make it happen. It has the power to change people's
lives — completely.
It doesn't take millions of dollars. One of the most transformational projects I've been a part of involved providing a Jeep to a group of midwives in Haiti. We had asked the midwives what we could
do for them, and they told us they needed a way to reach expectant mothers in a remote part of the
country. We supplied a Jeep, painted it pink, and put the Rotary logo on it. Three years later, we went
back to see how they were doing. They were excited by the outcomes: They told us that the mortality rate for mothers and infants in that region had dropped by 50 percent. That's what I call
transformational service.
But Jeeps don't last forever, and after eight years on the road, that vehicle was on its last legs. So we bought a pink Land Cruiser. It's still on the road, allowing the midwives to provide prenatal care to
women in that remote region. What makes a project transformational? It doesn't have to involve a lot
of money, but it has to reach people and have a major impact in the community. That is the key, and
that is where careful planning and thorough research come in. So do your research. Leverage your
resources. Seek partnerships that can increase your impact. And then take action.
Of course, service is only part of what a strong club must offer. It must also have good speakers,
provide leadership development, involve Rotaract and Interact, and bring value to its members and
reasons to participate in Rotary events. If your club is transformational and well-organized, everything else will follow. Members will be engaged, and new members will be eager to join you. Fundraising will
be easier: People love to give when they see how their money is making a difference and when they
know the organization is accountable. Your club will be vibrant, relevant, and alive — and it will Be the
Inspiration to those within its ranks as well as to the community it serves.
President Barry Rassin and Esther Rassin in San Diego January 2019.

V. YOUTH EXCHANGE NEWS
What a wonderful programme of Rotary this is. Our outward bound student from 2018 have returned
to Australia. I want to share the story of our Youth Exchange student from Coolamon after his
presentation to Coolamon Rotary on January 21st.
“Jackson and his classmates had a special lesson in civics this spring. The students were responsible
for guiding and planning sports activities for a class of nine year old pupils in our elementary school.
According to the teacher Jackson excelled in doing this, guiding the young ones with gestures and showing how to do things, with a positive attitude and enthusiasm and with a happy smile, no Finnish
words were needed to make the activities successful. Jackson was enjoying it too. Perhaps he will
have a career as a teacher one day!”
By Mr Marko Nevalainen MA Headmaster.
The returning students will be officially welcomed home in Young on February 10th.
You will hear a lot more of their adventures at the Conference in Griffith at the end of March.
VI. MELBOURNE 2023 RI CONVENTION
How awesome is this news! The convention is back Down Under. The city of Melbourne has been
provisionally selected as the site for the 2023 Rotary International convention.
Congratulations to the whole bid team who showcased the best of what Melbourne has to offer.
All Australian AND New Zealand Rotarians and the whole Rotary family will support this spectacular
event.
VII. SOMETHING TO PONDER
Genius Illustrations Reveal Everything Wrong with Today’s Society
As we are all aware that there are a lot of issues present in today’s society. Even though we notice
them, we are not too fast to tackle and fix them.
However, a great illustrator called Al Margen from Buenos Aires, Argentina has created incredible
drawings pinpointing the faults of the modern society. He has created perfect images which are truly
meaningful to the society. I can relate both images to Rotary ask me why!
