Roles and Goals - Review-Goals and philosophy are important because they will shape your program. They are the foundation of what and how you will teach and run your program.-Write them down:
-What do you want the kids to experience in your class?
-Next how are you going to achieve them?-Beginning class experience is everything. It will affect who stays and who goes. Foundation work is extremely important.
-Your responsibility is to plan, teach and model!

Five Principles of beginning instrumental music instruction:
Principle IUnderlying all instruction, in music as well as
in other subjects, is the principle that learning is often most effective when experience precedes theory.

teaching by sound, not sight – without notation.
Five Principles of beginning instrumental music instruction:
Principle IINot all students have had the same experiences, nor have
they all been equally successful in understanding their experiences. Therefore, the teacher must organize instruction in such a way as to proceed from the known to the unknown….
ResultYou should plan instruction so that students can find success
in their playing before continuing sequentially to more difficult skills.
-Students learn at varying rates and have different levels of musical experience,. You should meet the individual needs of students by supplying missing information or providing additional opportunities for musical enrichment
Five Principles of beginning instrumental music instruction:
Principle IIIThe learning process proceeds most effectively
when it is organized in such a way that the specific is related to the general and the general to the specific – in other words, from the whole to the parts and back again….
ResultTeach with the “Big Picture” in mind.
For a beginner this could simply be playing a single half-note well while reviewing all those small actions needed to sound that note; or playing through a whole etude, song or band arrangement.
Five Principles of beginning instrumental music instruction:
Principle IVThroughout the educational process, the teacher must
realize that the important activity in the classroom is not teaching but learning, and that learning depends upon the desire to learn….
ResultReal learning takes place only when the learner has a desire
to learn, plan instruction that will make students interested and active learners.
Chose attractive and interesting literature, offer appropriate positive reinforcement, maintain an appropriate pace to the class lessons, and be sure to demonstate your own enjoyment, personal satisfaction, and pleasure in teaching (especially in teaching the beginner).
Five Principles of beginning instrumental music instruction:

teaching is the art of making students want to learn….
