Rugs Play Important Role in Decor THE EVENING STAR, Washington, D. C.SATOBPAT, SEPTEMBER 18, 195*

Whether decorating a newroom or revitalizing an old one,a first item on jthe “must buy"

list may be carpet.Mental notes must be made

on your color preference, typeof furniture you plant to buy—-conventional, modern or a com-bination; location of the room—-hallway, stairs, living room, bed-room and the home traffic—-number of adults, children andpets who walk across the floordaily.

With these notes in mind, search out the most reputableretailer you can find. You mayneed nis help in the future, incase anything goes wrong. Car-pet almost always represents asizable investment.

Ifyou are carpeting hallways, children’s rooms or busy livingrooms, such patterns as tweeds, homespuns and designs will wearwell and not show dirt easily.Quiet colors are generally recom-mended for bedrooips. Eithersubdued or lively tones are finefor living rooms, depending onyour preference.

The Carpet Institute points

out that the height of the pile(how deeply you sink into a car-pet) isn’t a yardstick, since lowas well as high pile carpets canbe# of top quality. The institutealso says that no one weave isbetter than another in the sameprice range.

How to Care for Carpets.

After you have chosen thecarpet in the right color, fiberand price range, the big andyear-long question is: How toyou care for it?

First recommendation is toput a padding under a carpetfor longer wear. Carpet-sweepyour room every day and give

It a thorough vacuum-cleaningat least once a week.

For surface brightening homecare, sponge the pile surfacewith a liquid cleaner, a drycleaning liquid or one of thesynthetic types diluted with wa-ter. Absorbent powder cleanersalso brighten the surface. Do notuse soap, since it may cause ableeding of colors or some dam-age to the wool.

To remove spots from carpetswith wool or cotton yarns orman-made fibers: use a clean, slightly damp absorbent clothor white blotting paper to takeup liquids. Scraps up semisolidliquids. Use cold water or a neu-tral synthetic detergent to re-move soluble material.

If has not disappearedafter the carpet is dry, use acleaning fluid or call in a pro-fessional rug spotter.

Dry-cleaning fluids are pre-ferred on frieze and looped-pilecarpeting and for butter, oil andcream stinas. The water treat-ment is recommended for stainsfrom acid substances, followedby an alkaline solution to coun-teract the acidity.

Here are some other spot-cleaning remedies: Use water orwater and a soapless cleaner toremove beverages; dilute nailenamel with lacquer thinner orpolish remover on all but ace-tate piles or acetate and woolblends. Washable ink can be re-moved by water. Soapless clean-er is best*for milk.

Test Chemical First. These rules are good to re-

member: Always test the chemi-cal on an inconspicuous area;use the minimum amount of

material to remove the stain and 'work the spot from the edge ]toward the center; neutralize all :acids and alkalies; raise and lay 1the pile with a comb in the rightdirection after the spot has beenworked; allow the carpet to dry*with sufficient airing to preventmildew.

If a cigarette bum chars thesurface of the carpeting, care-fully clip away the blackenedends of the tufts. For I moreserious bums, consult a proses-.sional carpet repairer or your ’dealer. ,

Reverse your carpet to equal-ize the wear on it. Scatter rugsof the same pattern thrown in Ifront of chairs will make thoseheels easier on the carpet. Iffurniture has flattened the pile, Itry' a hot iron over a damp clothto raise it.

One last bit of advlcf. Don’t 1beat a carpet on an qutsideclothes-line: It’s bad for you sandworse for the carpet.
