A Century of Marvel: The Italian

Baroque The 17th century is the age

of Caravaggio, Bernini, Galileo, Monteverdi, Vico. It

is a time of contradictions and marvels, when modern science and philosophy are

born, opera and commedia dell’arte develop,

experimentation and tradition overlap in a new

form of art. What is the Baroque? Why does it

originate in Italy? Why was it rejected and then

rediscovered in the 20th century? This course proposes an aesthetic

reflection on the 17th century and offers a

multidisciplinary itinerary through the Italian culture

of the age, touching upon literature, painting,

sculpture, architecture, and theatre. !
