REGISTRATION DEADLINE: DECEMBER 29, 2014 2015 SPRING BUYING SHOW | SAN ANTONIO, TX | JANUARY 24 – 26
We’re rounding up everyone for a spring buying show in San Antonio full of learnin’, tradin’ and Wild West times. Average January
temperatures in the 60’s make beautiful San Antone a favorite host city–especially to the northerners among us.
We’ll have a diverse selection of seminars and topics to keep you on top of merchandising, managing, buying and selling. There’s a new contest to show off your display skills. Danny Cahill, winner of the eighth season of NBC’s The Biggest Loser, will have some things to tell us about determination and goal attainment. We’ll continue with those great interactive meetings where we learn from each other,
as well as the usual parties, vouchers, giveaways, coupons and prizes you’ve come to expect.
Think of the RJO Round-Up as a well-deserved vacation following the most hectic sales month of the year – and a great opportunity to replenish depleted inventories with the latest trending merchandise in preparation of Valentine’s Day.
Be sure you register before the December 29th deadline. Maybe even register now, while you have a little spare time before the holiday crush. We’ll see you in San Antonio!
FRIDAYHALF-DAY TRAINING SESSIONTrain Your Sales Associates – It’s Worth ItKate Peterson, Performance ConceptsNo matter the size of your staff, they are an asset ready to serve your clients, close sales which satisfy them, and build relationships which build your business. Too many jewelers continue to expect their sales associates to “watch what I do” and do it, without recognizing the hidden benefit in client relationships and sales that comes with ownership. Your sales associates are worth your attention in honing their skills at selling, deepening their understanding of the products you carry, as well as
learning your store’s safety and security.
In this session, learn more about goal setting, training and coaching, resources available to make your sales training effective, and more. Presenter Kate Peterson is a leading industry educator and has helped many RJO members improve their business outcomes.
The cost is $79 for the first attendee and $49 per additional attendee from your store. This includes the training session and afternoon break service.

which topic is most relevant to you. Please indicate your selection of session A or B when you register. SESSION AWhat Plans Really Matter in Your Actual Business?Facilitator: Kate Peterson, Performance ConceptsJewelers know a lot about what they “ought” to plan in their business. And then there is reality. You might have a business plan with a vision and/or mission statement. You might have a marketing plan, perhaps even connected to your budget. You might have a plan for training staff, including staff reviews not tied to compensation. What plan do you have that really works for you? What problem do you have that you believe a plan might help resolve?
SESSION BHow Do You Renew Yourself?Facilitator: Charlotte Preston, Charlotte Preston CatalystsWhether you started your business, bought an existing business, or inherited a business outright, days turn into months turn into years turn into decades, and every person needs renewal. If your energies lag, so does the business. How do you compel yourself forward in business, not just compel yourself to go to work every day? How do you say “Yes” with enthusiasm? How do you turbo-charge?

SUNDAY EVENING GALA – RJO ROUND-UP
Be prepared for a wonderful night deep in the heart of San Antonio. We’ll be out to capture the essence of the city at our Sunday Evening Gala. Our biggest round-up of RJO Round-Up promises to be a night of good times for everyone.
Of course, we have to build slowly, so the evening begins with a country-chic cocktail reception, followed by our traditional group dinner. After dessert is finished, enjoy the ambiance of the hotel ballroom, which will be transformed into a microcosm of San Antonio.
It’s there where the real fun begins with classic Texas traditions and a Wild West photo booth replete with hay bales, costumes and props. Test your ranch hand skills in lassoing a life-sized bull’s head. Play a super-sized game of Jenga, or join in the other activities around the ballroom.
And it wouldn’t be a party without a wild Texas band winding everyone up, so we’ve lined up a great one. If they make you want to do a little Texas-style boogying you’ll be in luck: country dance instructors will be on hand for lessons! You’ll be line dancing and Texas two-stepping with the best of ‘em in no time. No boots required.

8:30 – 10:20 a.m.Passing Your Business to the Next Generation
Chuck Frey, Charles Frey & Co.
Passing your store to the next generation is a complicated process at best. Charles Frey & Co. has worked with many retail jewelers with transition sales and strategies. The key is to provide for the financial needs of the selling generation and the fiscal needs of the business going forward. Three considerations: how to agree on the price, how to structure the buyout or transfer, and how to fund the process and present it to the public. Q/A to help you in your specific situation. In response to those who participated in Chuck’s session in Minneapolis, we’ve expanded the time available.
Colored Gemstones – Your Unique Story Earl Allen, Columbia Gem House
In this session, find out how selling colored gemstones can be a powerful way to run a profitable business that meets the multiple needs of current consumers. Some of the questions covered in this session will include: What gems offer profit margins that exceed those of diamonds? Who are the customers interested in colored gems and how do I find them? What gems are currently selling well and in what sizes? When is it best to mention fair trade in the selling process? Where do these gems come from, and how do I share those stories to romance the gem in the selling process? What treatments do I need to be aware of?

In this session, he is prepared to drill down on better jewelry photography for those who use visuals regularly, whether for ecommerce, for appraisal purposes should an item need to be replaced, for posting engaging photos on your social media sites, for building a portfolio of your designs from which to sell your custom work, or for helping clients make design and purchasing decisions by cell.

10:30 – 11:20 a.m.Facebook and Pinterest: How You Can Brand Yourself as Bridal Experts and Reach Your Customers
Tiffany Gonzalez, Keep Me Connected
To improve your bridal sales, you have to be where the brides are and today that means Facebook and Pinterest. The great thing is, that also is where a great deal of your current customers are, too! In this session, learn strategies to create and/or collect strong visual images that appeal to future brides. Find out how to use Facebook and Pinterest to prepare clients to think of you as their key resource for all things bridal as well as to turn to you for their rings and gifts for their bridal party and future purchases. You’ll learn to keep your brand consistent in your store and online, share local content and make more sales. Plus you’ll get some great tips on managing your store’s pages.
Lose Your Quit: Achieving Your Peak PerformanceDanny Cahill
On the journey to being successful in whatever you do, there are many roadblocks that can cause you to become “stuck.” In this seminar, Danny takes you on a journey through his battles with weight loss, discusses the lessons he learned on The Biggest Loser and how his pathway to success can be applied to achieve success in any area. Those lessons include powering through when you don’t see immediate results and losing the regrets of those decisions that didn’t work out by learning from them to help you move forward to find success. He reflects on losing the lies that keep you from beginning or finishing your journey to winning the battles of business. Most importantly, he’ll discuss finding the reason “why” to pull you forward and push you from behind to your dreams.
Planning a Remodel or New Store Design?tba, Stuller Inc.
There’s a store remodel, perhaps even a new store, in your future. It may be in 2015 or even 2018, but now’s the time to be strategic about creating a design that makes customers feel welcome, helps sales associates work most effectively, provides unobstructed traffic flow as well as work flow, and proactively provides security both regarding criminal activity and weather activity in your area. The good news is that store remodels normally bring with them an increase in business. Let your workspace be an effective tool to gain the most of that outcome.
Goal Setting for Marketing and Your Marketing Calendar
George Prout, Gems One
As a columnist for Southern Jewelry News, George Prout offers retailers marketing strategies that can drive interested customers to your store and prepare them to continue to buy from you. In this session for RJO jewelers, you’ll learn what kinds of goals make sense for your marketing efforts, how to select the marketing tools to help you achieve those goals, and consider how to plan your marketing spends to reach your goals.
9:30 – 10:20 a.m.Effective Window Displays Offer Critical Business Support
tba, Stuller Inc.
Whether or not yours is a destination store, your window displays play an important business role. They can attract potential buyers to your store, prepare them to anticipate and participate in a positive experience with you, and help them understand whether you offer gemstones and jewelry consistent with their tastes and financial capabilities. Effective window displays take planning and strategy, and they are among the most affordable ways to add interest, variety and currency to the public’s perception of your business. In this session, learn these strategies as well as pick up tips for effective window displays.
Staff Training and Team MeetingsKate Peterson, Performance Concepts
Jewelers mean to train their staff and yet allow interruptions to their plans. How do you deal with juggling staff schedules, time involved to come up with great training ideas, your own sense that sales associates should take the initiative and ask about what they don’t know? In this session, learn strategies and tools for staff training and team meetings. And, we’ll address some new training issues: cellphones on the floor and sales associates on social media.

11:30 a.m. – 12:20 p.m.Synergize Your Online Platforms
Shane O’Neill, Fruchtman
A consistent message across platforms, especially your website and Facebook business page, makes all the difference in reaching potential and returning clients. There is value in creating a strategy to accurately reflect the experience you offer customers in your brick and mortar store with what you offer online. As time permits, platforms such as Google Maps and others also will be included.
Stop Fake ID Fraud Before You Are BurnedGlen Garrity, G2 Identity Management
In the retail jewelry industry, theft crimes (which include fraud with checks and credit cards) are twice as likely to occur than robberies or burglaries. Personal information stolen in recent data breaches is being used illegally. Verifying a person’s identity is imperative, but retail employees are not trained to tell the difference between a bona fide ID and a fake ID. Glen Garrity, with 21 years in law enforcement, educates retailers on how to recognize a fraudulent ID before the crime can be committed.
Tools Make All the Difference for the Winner of the 2013 Instore Bench Pressure Challenge
Kelly Williams, K.W. Goldsmith
Kelly Williams, the winner of the 2013 Instore Bench Pressure Challenge, began to work out of her own studio instead of working at the bench of an employer because she was willing to spend the dollars necessary to have the right bench tools with which she can do incredible, exquisite work efficiently, accurately and safely. Having the right tools and the ability to sharpen and maintain them correctly really sets a bench jeweler apart from other jewelers. “They make you a better goldsmith,” she says. To win the Bench Pressure Challenge, one of her key strategies was to choose the right tools and the tools to maintain them. To engrave, for example, she needed the right gravers and the right diamond sprays. Kelly advocates increasing professionalism for bench jewelers, and she frankly admits a pleasure and delight in tools that only other bench jewelers can understand.
Tweak Sales Behaviors to Increase Your SalesNick Failla, Collected Concepts
Between the space that is “my sales associates need to sell more” and “I am going to have to let those two go because they just aren’t catching fire” there is something you really CAN do to increase your sales. You have to manage behavior. Require and reward your sales associates for behaviors that make a difference. For example, what happens if you require and reward sales associates for exchanging names with customers? If you require and reward sales associates for putting merchandise on or in the hands of customers? In both cases, you increase sales because of good management.
