RIBBOND: A reinforced polyethylene ribbon - Boon to pedodontist

Presenter : Dr. Ritu Jindal Prof.& H.O.D Deptt. Of Pedodontics & Preventive Dentistry National dental college Dera Bassi

Fiber reinforced composites have changed the scenario of esthetic dentistry

FRC’s are resin based materials aimed at enhancing their physical properties

They are reinforced either with glass,Polyethylene fiber or kevlar fibers

INTRODUCTION

Ribbond (Inc, Seattle, Wash) is a reinforced polyethylene fiber introduced in 1992.

Initially its use was limited to periodontal splinting and transient fixed partial prosthesis.

Now this material enjoys varied applications in day to day dentistry

Directly bonded post and coreTraumatic stablisationFixed orthodontic retainersEsthetic space maintainersConservative treatment of cracked tooth syndrome

Material of choice in the esthetic & conservative treatment of root stumps affected by nursing bottle caries.

It is also a good choice for esthetic space

maintainers.

This paper presents the application of this polyethylene ribbon - RIBBOND for various treatment modalities in pedodontic practice.

CASE –NURSING BOTTLE CARIES

31/2 year patient with chief complain of black dicoloration of anterior teeth.

Patient diagnosed with NURSING BOTTLE CARIES with Root stumps in relation to deciduous right & left central incisor & left lateral incisor

Pulpectomy performed 51,61,62

Removal of obturating material from 2/3rd root canal

Etching of root canal

Bonding of root canal

Ribbond measuring twice the depth of the canal prepared

Dual cure Resin cement (Rely X ARC, 3M) injected

INTRAOPERATIVE PHOTOGRAPHS

Patient was recalled for follow up after interval of 3 weeks

Why ribbond….?

No need for post space preparation (essential with the traditional post system) prevents destabilization

Adapts to the irregularities and undercuts with in the root canals.

It cross splints the tooth rather than wedging effect of preformed post and prevent root fracture

CONCLUSION

To conclude we suggest that this combined technique of polyethylene fibers and composite material could be very efficient alternative procedure to conventional treatment plans in pedodontic practice with excellent esthetics and functional results.
