Rheem Guide to Solar Hot Water
A name you can trustDesigned and manufactured in accordance with Australian Standards, Rheem builds quality products trusted for reliable performance in all Australian conditions.
Rheem offers a comprehensive warranty on every product in its range, backed by over 60 years experience in manufacturing water heaters in Australia.
Solar water heater basicsHow they workSolar water heaters combine a tank, collector(s) and booster, connected as a system whose primary means of heating water is gained from sunlight. Water is heated in the collector by absorbing the sun’s energy. When hot, this water is returned to the tank and stored until it is used. The heating cycle continues until all the water in the tank is hot, or until there is no sunlight.
Frost ProtectionSome systems use ‘Heat Exchange fluid’ in place of water. This fluid is more efficient at absorbing the sun’s energy, and has anti-freeze properties which prevent it from freezing on cold winter nights. The fluid transfers its heat to the water stored in the tank.
Choice of InstallationSolar water heaters can be installed completely on the roof, or as a ‘split system’, whereby the tank is located on the ground and the collectors are located on the roof. There is very little performance difference between these systems. The choice of which system to select is between a space saving, roof mounted design versus the improved aesthetics of a split system.
Boosting For periods when sunlight is unavailable, insufficient, or during the night, solar water heaters may rely on a booster. Both gas and electric boosted models are available to suit your home’s power connection.
What are RECs (Renewable Energy Certificates) Rheem Solar and Rheem Heat Pump water heaters use renewable energy to produce hot water, and reduce the community’s reliance on fossil-fuel burning energies like electricity. This makes them eligible for the Federal Government’s ‘Renewable Energy Certificates’ or REC program. One REC is created for each megawatt hour per year (MWh/yr) of electricity displaced by an eligible installation.
The number of RECs your installation is eligible for depends on the system’s capacity, efficiency and installation location. When the installation is complete, the RECs can be sold and the value returned to the householder, offsetting the installation’s cost.
Visit: http://www.orer.gov.au/swh/index.html for more information, or call Rheem on 132 552 to claim your RECs.

Things to consider when selecting a Solar Water Heater
1) Purchase/Installation CostsThe additional components found in a solar water heater are both more expensive to buy and require additional labour to install. Lower running costs and both State and Federal Government incentives ensure these costs are more than paid back over the life of the unit.
Heat Pumps, which don’t have collectors, are slightly cheaper to install but are marginally less efficient than solar systems. 2) Running Costs Solar water heaters have the lowest running costs of any water heater as they use the sun’s energy to heat water.
Heat pumps take heat from the air and transfer this into the water. They typically use around 1/3 of the energy to heat water compared to an electric storage water heater.
3) CapacitySolar water heaters are available in a range of tank capacities and tank mounting positions. The larger the tank, the more solar heated water that can be stored. Remember to consider both the space you have available for installation and your budget.
All Rheem solar water heaters come with either gas or electric boosters to ensure you have sufficient hot water all year round. 4) The EnvironmentPowered by renewable energy, solar water heaters and heat pumps reduce electricity consumption. This displaces the need to produce electricity, and the greenhouse gas emissions resulting from its production, indirectly benefiting the environment.
This easy reference guide is provided next to each product showing costs, running efficiency and greenhouse gas emission comparisons.

GlossarySolar water heater (SWH) - A water heater that consists of a tank, solar collector(s) and booster, plumbed together as a system and whose primary means of heating water is gained from sunlight.
Direct (Open) - A SWH in which water flows through, and is heated directly in the collectors before being returned to the tank.
Indirect (Closed) - A SWH in which heat exchange fluid flows through, and is heated within the collectors before being transferred to the water in the tank.
Booster - A back-up electric heating element or gas powered water heater plumbed into the SWH to provide hot water in periods of low solar gain.
Split Systems (Pumped Systems) - A SWH in which the tank is installed in a separate location to the collectors installed on the roof. Typically, the tank is installed at ground level.
Close Coupled (Thermosiphon Systems) - A SWH is which the tank and collectors are installed together. Typically, the tank is mounted on the roof above the collector(s).
Greenhouse Gas Emissions - Carbon Dioxide that is emitted into the atmosphere from burning fossil fuels to extract energy.
Collectors - Solar panels that form part of a SWH in which water or heat exchange fluid is heated.
