Rooftops with VFD BenefitAll Commercial Applications
ASHRAE 62 specifies ventilation rate for different types of commercial buildings. In each commercial building, there is a ventilation requirement for occupancy, building size and building type. Furthermore, per ASHRAE 62 and other building codes, ventilation is required when the building is occupied. Depending on occupancy, building size and building type, ventilation requirements during occupied mode generally vary from 10% to 40% of the package unit airflow. Supply fans in standard package units use constant volume, which means they have a single high speed airflow. Ventilation (fresh air) is supplied by the supply fans at maximum airflow resulting in maximum energy usage.
A Rheem Package Unit with VFD Technology, operates the supply fan at two speeds instead of only one. During the fan only mode and 1st stage cooling demand, it operates at 50% of high speed. During 2nd stage cooling and heating demand, it operates at 100%.
The indoor fan speed difference between a standard package unit and a Rheem Package Unit with VFD Technology is what enables dramatically reduced operation costs and improved comfort.

Building codes require fan operation to supply fresh air during occupied modes. Current rooftops supply fresh air using high speed which is wasteful and uses a lot of energy. A Rheem Package Unit with VFD Technology reduces the supply fan speed by 50% while still meeting fresh air requirements and saving up to 85% of overall supply fan operating cost.

Commercial equipment is sized for full load operation which only occurs with maximum outdoor load and indoor load. These conditions occurs only 10% to 30% of the time. Therefore 70% to 90% of cooling operation is on 1st stage. A Rheem Package Unit with VFD Technology increases IEER by up to 51% when operating on 1st stage cooling.
A standard package unit in 1st stage cooling operates the supply fan at 100% airflow. Operating in 1st stage cooling at 50% airflow can remove more than twice as much moisture than a standard package unit. A Rheem Package Unit with VFD Technology improves thecomfort level by reducing the relative humidity in the condition space.
