To assure correct equipment selection the characteristics of the material to be pumped and applied must be identified and understood. Users should not base their selection on only the viscosity of the material. There are many conditions that influence a materials level of viscosity. - Ambient room temperature or material temperature (can dramatically increase or reduce material viscosity). - Agitation or shearing of the material to create temporary or permanent viscosity changes - Potential application viscosity changes. Environmental conditions such as humidity, temperature, lights may trigger irreversible changes in a material (polymerizaton, aging, oxidation, curing, thickening). Some materials may congeal or crystallize, causing the pumping system to fail or prematurely wear. Pumps and accessories may chatter or seize in some cases. Some materials may separate or settle. Careful material agitation or circulation may solve these problems. In some cases, the impact of the pump or accessory on a pumped material due to heat or shear can be significant. Therefore it is necessary to consider the following: - Maximum fluid pressure when the material leaves the pump or applicator - Maximum flow rate required from the system t the Always consul r and - The pump cycle rate or the pump cycles per dispense material supplie lierl supp follow materians. directio

Increasing the amount of agitation lowers the viscosity level but the agitation time does not. The viscosity level will return to its original level when agitation stops. Increased agitation increases viscosity When agitation stops the material returns to its original viscosity.

13
Pressure drop is the resistance that prevents material from moving forward in the pipe. Two pipe variables influence this resistance: the (inside/internal) diameter and the pipe length. The pump will generate a pressure, strong enough to move the fluid material through the pipe (or hose) to the material pipe outlet; this pressure must be enough to overcome the original pressure drop. While it is hard to reduce the pipe length, it is relatively easy to select an appropriate internal pipe diameter.
PRESSURE DROP CALCULATIONPressure loss (bar/m) = 6.9* x Flow (l/min) x Viscosity (cPs) D (interior diameter in mm)4

5. COMPRESSIBILITYViscous materials can be compressed. Users have to take into account the difference between the flow rate and pressure drop through the pipe; it occurs when both the gun (used to dispense material) and the pump stop. Turning on both the gun and pump triggers the same process, due to this compressibility.

6/ RHEOLOGYThe ideal material is Newtonian. Its viscosity remains constant during the whole process (see previous page). In the case of a non-Newtonian product, viscosity will develop (change) until it is dispensed or the process is ended. Some materials may liquify while others may thicken depending on the shearing they experience when they are used. Each product family has its own rheology and response to shearing, even though the temperature remains the same. Viscosity is a common measurement of a materials condition. Viscosity reflects the internal friction of a fluid which makes it resist flowing past a solid surface such as the inside of a pipe or hose. Many conditions can influence viscosity in non-Newtonian fluids, one key influence is temperature combined with shear and time. Most material viscosities decrease with increased temperature, however this result is difficult to predict. In summary, dynamic viscosity takes into account the effect of shear rate, time and temperature and is the critical viscosity to be aware of when specifying pumping and dispensing equipment. In addition, a materials original viscosity may be affected by the materials age, exposure to evaporation or settling of heavy particals from solution.es to follow simple guidelin There are two aterials consistent and the to help keep m in good working order: equipment res possible um fluid pressu use the minime material with a single or and cover th wiper ram plate. double
7/ FILLERS AND ABRASIONIn most cases, a materials abrasiveness is determined by the characteristics of the fillers used in it. The shape, hardness and concentration of filler will significantly influence the proper selection of a pump, its fluid seals, fluid filters, and other system accessories. Decreasing pump cycle rates by using larger cylinders and the lowest possible fluid pressure combined with the most effective fluid seals will minimize the negative affects of abrasive material fillers and increase pump life. AIRLESS SPRAYINGAirless spraying is based on the application of pressure to a fluid with a high- pressure pump. The highpressure fluid is directed through a small orifice. As the material exits the orifice and goes to ambient pressure, the material rapidly expands and breaks into fine particles, a process commonly referred to as atomization. The size of the spray orifice determines the amount of fluid filtration required. Impurities, dried particles and other particles that are larger than the orifice will plug its opening. Therefore most spray systems require some degree of fluid filtration. It is necessary to balance the appropriate size spray tip with the proper meshed fluid filter: - To avoid lost production due to clogging and cleaning of spray tips. - To avoid damaging or changing the material and its characteristics by having too fine of filtration. - To minimize material pressure drop over the filter (finer filter has more pressure loss than a more coarse filter element) - To reduce the plugging of the filter (the finer the screen the more quickly it will plug). High pressure can cause a plugged filter screen to collapse or break in some instances. - To reduce the required frequency of filter cleaning or replacement. When filtering a material the filter must be continuously maintained to be effective.

Users should make sure to select a filter with an orifice smaller than the diameter of the tip orifice.
Please use a filter with an opening larger than 160 mesh for pasty materials.
Users should select a filter with a large filtering surface, depending on the flow rate and the cleaning frequency. If the user is not satisfied with the end result, they might set up several filters either in series or on a parallel line.

ca practoirmlation infPRIMING PISTON PUMP: THE HEART OF THE SYSTEMMost REXSON pumps are reciprocating positive displacement piston pumps. Pneumatic compressed air power or hydraulic power drives these pumps. These pumps are double acting pumps with displacement occurring on the up and down stroke of the pump. These pumps provide low-shear pumping action that is very friendly to a wide range of materials resulting in little or no degradation. REXSON piston pumps insure constant flow rates and have adjustable fluid outlet pressure capability (simple user adjustment of inbound air pressure). REXSON priming piston pumps are usually recommended for high viscosity products greater than 3,000 cPs. Lower viscosity levels are typically pumped using double ball designs (see specific literature for selection guidelines).
24
SAFETYPneumatic drive pumps are inherently explosion proof. With proper installation pneumatic, pumps are safe for use with solvents and other flammable materials. Pneumatic pumps can be safely used in explosion proof and wet environments.
EFFICIENCYREXSON pneumatic drive pumps automatically start and stop with the opening and closing of the system dispense/spray outlet valve. These pumps build to a static pressure and then automatically stop until the outlet valve is opened. REXSON has a wide range of pump seals to meet varied materials that can be pumped.
DOUBLE-ACTING RECIPROCATING PUMPThroat packing nut and large wet cup for lubricant. Operator safety screen. Packings of various types compatible with pumped materials. Pump cylinder designed to resist abrasion (severe duty treatment). NEW check valve designed for quicker closing. Larger internal check valve designed for minimum pressure loss, good resistance to abrasion and low shearing.
PISTON DOWNSTROKECheck valve (green) closed against the seat and the material in chamber V2 is displaced out of the pump by the pump displacement rod.
PISTON UPSTROKECheck valve (green) opens and material is forced into chamber V2 by the priming piston. The top check (red) closes and material is pulled from chamber V1.
Severe duty seat, quick replacement, reduced maintenance.

RECIPROCATING PISTON PUMP PRESSURE RATIOAir motor is designed to drive the fluid pump reciprocating motion to feed and discharge material. The air motor is the energy source that creates pump outlet pressure. The area of the air motor versus the area of the pump rod creates the theoretical pump pressure ratio. S1 (AIR MOTOR PISTON SURFACE AREA) = PUMP PRESSURE RATIO S2 (PUMP PISTON SURFACE AREA) This pump pressure ratio determines the maximum possible PUMP MATERIAL OUTLET PRESSURE. The PUMP PRESSURE RATIO x inbound driving air pressure (max. 6 bar) = STALLED FLUID OUTLET PRESSURE Example: Pump 63:1 = 63 (ratio) x 6 (air pressure) = 378 bar REXSON air motor cycling is driven by two pneumatic position sensors that control the main air valve that directs air to or away from the driving air motor piston. This alternating high-volume flow of air to/from either the top or bottom of the air piston results in an up down movement of the piston (see drawings).STANDARD MOTORTOP SENSOR

2. Chemical CompatibilityA chemical materials aggressiveness and Ph levels might lead to pump corrosion. It is highly recommended to make sure all metals, elastomers and plastics are compatible with the pumped material. Users must make their pump wetted parts selections based upon a range of criteria including the overall life cycle of the pump. Making the correct selection can be difficult due to the range of material combinations possible. We will use the Ph index, a significant factor, to determine a materials corrosiveness and aggressiveness compared to the pump metals. In addition, we have to take into account any thinners and solvents used in cleaning operations. ACIDPh Values COMPATIBLE MATERIALS

ca practoirmlation infFOLLOWER PLATE SELECTIONare Plate (platen) references on page 114.
The ram plate (platen), integral with the single- or twin-post ram, is designed to provide positive priming pressure for pumping high-viscosity materials. It also isolates the material in the drum from air while the drum is emptied, simultaneously protecting the material from outside contaminants. As the material is evacuated from the drum, the plate cleans the sides of the drum and minimizes any material waste at the bottom of the drum. As material viscosity increases the amount of flow from a pump decreases. Single- & twin-post rams with plates are recommended when viscosities are higher than 3,000 cPs. Plates should be considered with any material that does not easily seek its own level in a drum. Usually we use plates with flat wiper seals with viscosities up to 25,000 cPs. Over these viscosities we advise the use of double O-ring seal plates.PAIL OR DRUM DESIGN VISCOSITY

ca practoirmlation infFLUID REGULATIONFluid Pressure Regulators are used to reduce the fluid pressure delivered from a pump. Regulators are designed to deliver constant fluid pressure based upon the inputs or setting of the regulator. Fluid regulators should be placed as close as possible to the point of application. Fluid filtration placed before the fluid regulator will protect it from contamination. Fluid regulators can be controlled remotely through a pneumatic signal or manually (see drawings 1 and 2 below).
REGULATOR FUNCTION1. The fluid regulator closes and stops fluid flow when the pressure in the hose downstream of the regulator is greater than the set regulator pressure (when there is free flow with no back pressure the regulator will not function). 2. THE INPUT FLUID PRESSURE SHOULD BE APPROXIMATELY 40% HIGHER THAN THE REGULATED PRESSURE. For good control in a pneumatic regulated system a stable air supply is required. Fluid supply pulsation should be minimized to help assure good regulator function.

These materials, due to material compressibility and resistance to flow factors, have a tendency to string and extrude even as the valve closes. When using a manual valve the operators skill can be an important factor in the final dispense quality. REXSON valves are designed to provide optimum results with these kinds of materials. Some manual operated valves may require a mechanical or pneumatic assist to make the valve triggering flexible. Other valves, both manual and automatic, are designed for specific user requirements (see Gun and Accessory catalogue section).
MANUAL VALVESUsers should take into account the following criteria to select a manual valve: - Easy to manipulate. - Trigger flexibility, regardless of the working pressure. - Easy to use, adjustable to the physical working position and the shape of the final product. - Quality of the material being dispensed. - Diameter of inlet material hose. - Characteristics of the material. - Weight and mass balance of the valve and hose. - Available range of tips, disposable, re-usable, with diverse shapes and sizes. - Easy maintenance and low operating costs. - Easy to see and adjust the material bead. - Optional use of accessories for automatic monitoring, dispense nozzle extensions, inline filters, etc.

AUTOMATIC VALVESValves, with automatic operation, either fixed-mount or mounted on recirprocators or robots, must be both strong and light weight. REXSON automatic valves are available in either stainless steel or carbon steel, with pneumatic triggering with almost instantanious start/stop operation. Double acting pneumatic cylinder operation ensures powerful and fast opening and closing.
The quality of dispensing depends upon the correct pump selection and the pressure drop through all supply lines and supply accessories. It is important to minimize the charge between the material static pressure (material at rest or no flow condition) and the dynamic material pressure (pressure when material is flowing) in order to deliver a steady bead.Calculation

ca practoirmlation infFLUID HOSETypical hose core materials are constructed with polyamid; polyamid hoses are used for the supply of common sealant or adhesive materials. Materials that are more chemically aggressive may require the use of PTFE (Teflon) hoses. Materials that are moisture sensitive also typically require the use of PTFE hose (or PTFE line) to prevent moisture from migrating through the hose into the material being pumped.
HOSE SELECTIONHoses need to be selected offering the best balance between several different parameters: working pressure, flexibility, diameter vs. pressure loss, length, material compatibility, cost, etc. Working Pressure The hose must meet or exceed the maximum working pressure of the system. Typically, as hose diameter increases working pressure decreases. Flexibility The use of flexible hoses is essential to make the operation of dispensing equipment more operator friendly. The bigger the diameter of the hose the larger the hoses curve radius. Hose stiffness is increased by high fluid pressure. Fluid Pressure Loss Factors Pressure loss increases dramatically with smaller hose diameters and greater hose lengths. By reducing the amount of pressure loss through the fluid delivery system the performance of the system is improved. Using the lowest possible operating pressures reduces maintenance costs and material waste. Dont use hose that is longer than the application requires. REXSON Ready-to-Use packages come complete with larger diameter outlet hoses coupled with smaller diameter whip hoses leading to the dispense valve. This approach is a good compromise that maximizes performance and ease of operator use.

ca practoirmlation infCOMPRESSED AIR SUPPLYThe life of your compressed-air driven pump is determined to a large degree by the quality of the compressed air supply. Insufficient air flow volume, undersized air lines, long or complex air supply circuitry all contribute to the effectiveness of any pneumatic drive motor. Pressure and flow rates from a pneumatic powered pump are affected by an inadequate air supply. For example the air hose diameter feeding a pneumatic motor should be at least as large as the inlet port diameter to the air motor. DEW POINT IS A FUNCTION OF TEMPERATURE The amount of water in the air varies with the relative humidity and ambient temperature. Therefore any air supply system should eliminate as much moisture condensation and impurities as possible. Dew point is equal to the water vapor contained in one cubic meter of air at 100% relative humidity.Temperature Grain per cu. ft. / (F / C) Gram per m3 Temperature (F / C) Grain per cu. ft. / Gram per m3

To eliminate air motor icing, it is recommended that the amount of moisture in a compressed air system be minimized. Icing of air motor parts and mufflers can decrease a pumps output. Air filtering and drying is an option that can help increase the life and operation of pneumatic equipment.

THE PUMP: KEY SELECTION FACTORSREXSON pumps consist of three families (ALTO, MAJOR, and TENOR) and are organized by their fluid delivery capacity and pressure ratios. Pressure/Flow performance curves are displayed for each pump: flow rate and pressure for 5 kinds of materials at different viscosity levels. The optimum pump selection should follow recommended flow rate charts to assure proper feeding of the pump. In the recommended zone heat and shear are minimized. The operating life of a pump is inversely proportional to the fluid pressure it generates. Abrasive material pumping requires a careful selection of the pump; work at the lowest possible pump cycle rate and pressure. We also suggest users avoid using a pump at its maximum recommended capacity. The material characteristics are the primary factors to evaluate when selecting the pump.
REMEMBER TO:Make sure all air lines are large enough. Carefully select material lines and hoses to minimize pressure loss while maintaining hose flexibility. Minimize the number of fittings and elbows. Include drain and pressure relief valves. Strictly follow all material and equipment safety instructions. Make sure all equipment is electrically grounded (read all instruction manuals).
