Summary of Submissions from the Faculty of Arts:
Proposed changes to the Major and Honours in Psychology and the Certificate in Mental
Health in terms of the number of years normally permitted for completion of the program
and the number of compulsory courses.
Summary of Submissions from the Faculty of SASE:
Biology [note: BIOL 4861 was tabled pending clarification]
A new course BIOL 3875 (Marine Tropical Biology) is proposed to replace two other
courses. A series of title, prerequisite and description changes are proposed are proposed
for 6 BIOL courses and it is proposed to remove two 3000-level courses from the
Calendar. Changes to one BIOL course (4861) were tabled pending a clarification.
Proposed program changes consist of changing course options for the Environmental
Biology and Biology Options, course options and credit hours for the Marine Biology
Option and instituting a Minor in Biology. The latter issue is also being examined by the
Academic Planning and Review Committee.
Computer Science:
Clarifications in terms of notations are proposed for four CS courses to clarify options
and requirements for Software Engineering students. Course descriptions for DA 4993
and 3773 have been updated.
Saint John Senate 25 November 2015

Favor:4/Abstain:1
New Business:
15-16 [01]. Psychology Major, Psychology Honors, Certificate in Mental Health
Timeline changes allowing 10 years to complete and increasing the number of BA courses in the
Psychology major from five (5) to six (6) compulsory courses.
Motion to accept the changes
R. McKay/ G. Fleet
Carried Unanimously
15-16 [02] BIOL 3875 Marine Tropical Biology
This course has a lower number of credit hours than the courses it is replacing (BIOL 3663 and BIOL
3675). It is combining aspects of the two courses that have been taught in the Bahamas. Having it in one
course makes it easier for scheduling. The committee notes that it is an elective and not a required
course so the number of credit hours would not affect the program.
Motion to approve
R. McKay/ M. Wegener
Carried Unanimously
15-16 [03] BIOL 4861 Advanced Environmental Biology
Description and pre-requisite change to be update to reflect the actual content of the course.
Committee is requesting a clarification on the rationale, as it appears there may be subject matter that
pertains more to business than biology with terms such as “production”, “natural resource
development” and “Sustainable development”. The committee also notices that in the calendar, the
course is listed as BIOL 4861, not BIOL 4691 and would like clarification on the correct number.
Motion to accept upon clarification
R. McKay/ G. Fleet
Carried Unanimously
15-16 [05-08] Title changes: BIOL 3435, CHEM 3435/ BIOL 4435, CHEM 4435
These courses are being cross listed and renamed as follows: BIOL3435/CHEM 3435- Biomolecules and
Primary Metabolism (A); BIOL 4435/CHEM 4435-Biologically Active Natural Products and Secondary
Metabolism (A).
These courses are being offered as part of a two year course rotation. The (A) signifies that the courses
will be held alternating years.
The committee suggests that the request should have come in under “other”.
Motion to accept changes
R. McKay/ G. Fleet
Carries Unanimously
15- 16 [04] BIOL 2245 Introductory Molecular Cell Biology
Description change to accurately reflect topics discussed in the delivery of the course.
15-16 [09] BIOL 4245 Molecular Ecology and Environmental Science
Title change to “Molecular Ecology 4ch (3C 3L)”. Description change and Pre-requisite change tailored
to a new faculty member who wants a different focus
Motion to accept changes
R. McKay/ M. Wegener
Carried Unanimously
15-16 [10-11] BIOL 3663/ BIOL 3675 Deletion
Deletion of BIOL 3663- Bio/Eco of Elasmobranchs and BIOL 3675- Dolphin Field Ecology, which are being
replaced by BIOL 3875. This one course encompasses the material in both of the old courses and makes
it easier for scheduling.
Motion to accept changes
R. McKay/ M. Bishop
Carried Unanimously
15-16 [12] Environmental Biology
Adjust the restrictions on upper level Biology environmental course requirements for 3rd and 4th year
environmental biology majors. This will allow the department the increased flexibility with
environmentally related course offerings that reflects the current expertise of departmental
researchers.
Motion to accept change
R. McKay/ M. Wegener
Carried Unanimously
15-16 [13] Biology Option
Add physics as an acceptable non-biology science elective for Biology majors (in addition to Geology).
This may help biology majors who wish to pursue professional programs in the future.
Motion to accept change
R. McKay/ G. Fleet
Carried Unanimously
15-16 [14] Marine Biology Option
Remove BIOL 3173 from listing and add the 4ch to the total number of required upper level biology
courses from 42ch to 46ch. BIOL 3173 was a marine field course that has not been offered since 2006.
The committee would like to clarify if the old course is being replaced with a new course.
Motion to accept change upon clarification
M. Wegener/ R. McKay
Carried Unanimously
15-16 [15] Biology Minor Option
The biology minor option may have a retention value. The committee can pass this under the
understanding that APR is in the process of going over it. The description listed is verbatim what is listed
in Fredericton.
The committee feels that the description should be cleaned up and the notation “The minor in Biology
follows section V in the “University Wide Academic Regulations” of the Academic Undergraduate
Calendar” should be removed. There are also several typos and capitalization issues that should be
fixed. The committee also feels that the wording “Human Anatomy, Physiology and Pathophysiology”
should be removed and the description should only list the course numbers (BIOL 1411, BIOL 1412, BIOL
1441, BIOL 1442, BIOL 2381, BIOL 2852)
Motion to approve changes upon clarification and necessary changes
R. McKay/ G. Fleet
Carried Unanimously
