Projected Schedule

• November 1 _ Contractor’s “Notice to Proceed”

• December 1– Demolition & New Construction begins

• Fall 2019 – Construction complete• Spring 2020 – Landscape

Phase 1 Work & Maintenance of Traffic

• Set up of work site (November 2017)

• Removal of roadway median; existing bridge is split into two parallel bridge spans. A temporary barrier is installed between the spans.

• Southern span (northbound lanes) is removed.

• Traffic is reduced to one lane per direction across Carlin Springs Road bridge

• When south span is removed, all traffic on Carlin Springs and George Mason must be rerouted via detours (December 1-3 weekend)

Detours - Used Only During Short Term Closures

Phase 2 Work & Maintenance of Traffic

• Construction of new south side bridge section

• All traffic (vehicles and pedestrians) is shifted to the north span

• When steel beams are installed both roads will be closed for one day (a Saturday, date TBD)

Phase 3 Work & Maintenance of Traffic

• Removal of existing north side span

• Construction of new north side bridge span

• Construction of new sewer line in Carlin Springs Rd and Abingdon Street.

• All traffic (vehicles and pedestrians) is shifted onto the new south side span.

• When north span is removed, all traffic on Carlin Springs & George Mason Drive must be rerouted via detours (a weekend in early summer 2018), Also closure on one Saturday for steel beams installation.

• Abington Street within sewer line construction zone is reduced to one lane (north bound only).

Sewer Line Construction

Phase 4 Work & Maintenance of Traffic

• Refurbishment of bridge abutments and wing walls

• Completion of permanent sidewalks on new bridge

• Vehicular traffic on Carlin Springs Road will be returned to two lanes in each direction across bridge

• Full pedestrian travel (both sides of bridge) will be restored after permanent sidewalks are completed

Completion

• Removal of construction trailer, temporary signage and building materials

• Restoration of site and planting of new landscaping

• No impacts on traffic movement (vehicles or pedestrians)

Expected Community Concerns

• Cut-through traffic as a result of short-term lane closures and traffic detours

• Potential traffic congestion from lane reductions & detours during construction

• Some access restriction on N. Abingdon Street

• Pedestrian crossings of N. Carlin Springs Road at N. Wakefield and N. Edison streets

• Rerouting or disruptions to Metrobus Route 25 service

• Noise & dust from demolition and construction
