Purpose

To seek community views on the Schedule 17 Planning Consent design of the

replacement London Underground substation and vent shaft building.

This is before submission of the application to the London Borough of Camden.

Location and scope

Existing building

The existing London Underground Substation

and Vent shaft building is located on the

corner of Melton Street and Drummond Street.

The building provides power for the Northern

Line trains and vents the platforms below.

The location of the HS2 station at Euston

requires the demolition and replacement of

the existing building.

Design development

Design considerationsThe location and design of the building are informed by:

• Surrounding streetscape and nearby architecture

• London Underground operational needs

• Location of tube tunnels

• Space planning for internal equipment

• Incorporation of access door, windows and ventilation louvres

• Need for parking for maintenance vehicles

• General maintenance needs

Green walls and active frontages (eg. retail shop) within the building design are not consistent with the

considerations above

Future opportunities

Building design offers flexibility for future use of adjacent

land to the east.

Adjacent land is not part of the application to Camden

Council.

Future uses will be considered at a later date and we

welcome feedback.

Context

Form

• A cube shape, 4 levels in height

• Geometries will be adapted to generatevariations in scale and detail across thefacade

Function

• A vital piece of infrastructure which enablesLondon Underground to function

• Operation requirements driven by LondonUnderground needs

Materiality

• Exploring glazed tiles, which have been used inLondon Underground station design. As a material itis robust, distinctive and low maintenance

• Material gives flexibility of form and perforationwhich can be exploited to integrate openings andcreate a dynamic facade arrangement and enableventilation

• Opportunities for lighting to add visual interest atnight
