Arizona businessman, entrepreneur, civic
and community leader and Munds Park pioneer
Dick Gray passed away on Friday, December 13,
2019 at the age of 95.
In 1959 Mr. Gray was named General
Manager of Northern Aire Lodge and Country
Club, the company that built the original club
house, golf course and began the residential
development of Munds Park in the late 1950’s.
He and his wife Wilma were regular fixtures in
the clubhouse, hosting club members, guests
and prospective property buyers and assisting
them to navigate the muddy terrain that was
prevalent in the early years of the develop-
ment. That original development effort was
hampered by the lack of access to the area
caused in part by a delay in the completion of I-
17 and the company eventually ceased opera-
tions in the 1960’s. But Mr. Gray remained
involved and interested in the area as subse-
quent developers moved into Munds Park and
developed successful communities. He eventu-
ally became a founding member of the original group of investors who purchased the country
club property from the Pinewood-Sun Lakes Development Company in 1985 and named it
Pinewood Country Club. He was a summer resident of Munds Park for 60 years.
Mr. Gray was born in St. Louis, MO. As a child he lived in Arkansas and Tennessee. Growing
up, he attended Western Military Academy in Illinois, St. Johns Military Academy in Wisconsin,
and went on to attend The Citadel (Military College of South Carolina). He served in World War II
as a member of the Army Air Corp. After the war he rejoined his family which had relocated to
Phoenix, AZ where he took a job as a swimming instructor at the Phoenix Country Club. From
that beginning he soon embarked on a long, successful career in the hospitality, management
and consulting industries including managing the Hotel Westward Ho, the Arizona Contractors
Club, the Arizona Club and developing and managing The Cloud Club atop the Guarantee Bank
Building in Phoenix.
Mr. Gray eventually established his own management and consulting company, Dick Gray &
Associates with offices in the West Plaza Shopping Center which his company managed. Mr.
Gray’s expertise and experience in the hospitality industry led to his involvement with numerous
hospitality related and civic organizations. He held the positions of VP of Tourism for the
Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce, Founding Director of the Valley of the Sun Visitors and
Convention Bureau, served as a Director on the Dedication Committee for the Phoenix Civic
Plaza and also acted as Director for the Community Dance for the opening night of the Phoenix
Civic Plaza in 1978.
Dick Gray & Associates boasted a long list of distinguished clients and hosted many notewor-
thy events including Major League Baseball drafts and the 40th World Shooting Championship
sanctioned by the International Olympic Committee, the NRA and the Swiss Shooting
Association. Continued on page 13

With 310 days of sunshine per year, Yuma is a perfect placeto escape the cold this time of year … and to grow winter veg-etables. The Arizona riverside city, vibrant with Territorial his-tory, is on the international bird migration route, the ideal set-ting for the Yuma Bird, Nature and History Festival.
I just returned from Yuma, where I had a blast atthe Bird Fest, worked my tan and got a taste of theagricultural scene with a Field to Feast excursion. Ialso discovered the Ultimate Valentines Date Night atthis unlikely destination. Read on for my recommen-dation. Spoiler alert: Fodor’s named it one of the"World’s Most Unique Dining Experiences."
But first, the Field to Feast tour. I harvested veg-etables in a real working field … in January. What
would my Great-Grandfather Rognald Silverness say? He farmed in cold and blizzardycentral Minnesota. He’d be surprised as I to learn that over 90% of all leafy vegetablesconsumed in the US and Canada during the winter come from Yuma, Arizona.
The excursion led by Visit Yuma transported me behind the scenes into private farmfields. I talked with farmers, picked fresh veggies and got a peek at pickers and machin-ery. The half-day farm to fork tour culminated in a chef-prepared feast.
Where We Grow Our Food, Animals Grow
Before the Field to Feast tour, I hadn’t given thoughtto the mayhem animal feces create for food producers. But of course, where we grow our food, animals grow.Dr. Paula Rivadeneira, a Food Safety and WildlifeSpecialist, opened my eyes. Her area of expertise is inpre-harvest food safety and developing environmentallyfriendly ways to keep animals out of agricultural fields.
“Deer, javelina and coyotes poop in there,” said @PaulaThePoopDoctor (her Twitterhandle) pointing to the lush fields of University of Arizona–Yuma research farm. “Wecould lose an acre because some animal pooped in the field.” By law, produce within afive-foot diameter of the feces must be fenced off.
After a food safety talk, we donned hairnets, washed our hands, put on protectivegloves and headed out to the fields to fill two bags – one with vegetables for the localmission and the second with leafy produce to bring home. Brandishing my lettuce knife,I walked into the fields of the Arizona desert.
At the University of Arizona research farm, vegetables are planted at the beginningof October and then every two weeks after that, so there’s always something for Fieldto Feast participants to harvest. Although I wasn’t exactly sure how to cut Bok Choy orsome of the other exotic veggies, Master gardeners and other horticulture expertswere on hand to assist and answer questions.
Agriculture in Action
Later driving through the lush fields ofDesert Premium Farms, Farmer John Boeltstook the microphone and shared aboutagriculture ‘then and now.’
“The yield per field is 30% higher with30% less water than 30 years ago,” said thefourth-generation farmer. “We’re using science to do things better. As for the climate, there is no other place in the US quite like this, especially for winter vegetables.”
“In this area, much is hand-harvested: dates, citrus, leafy produce,” Boeltz contin-ued. “People are lined up for those jobs for doing piece work. Unfortunately, they'renot in this country.” He explained that the Mexican labor force is geographically conve-nient – the border crossing at Los Algodones is only ten miles away, but multiple feder-al agencies (five, he says) make it difficult to obtain visas for farmworkers.
“There is an artificial undersupply of workers [because of federal regulations,]”revealed the farmer. According to Boeltz, the H-2A visa program that allows employersto bring foreign nationals to the US limits the visa to nine months per job per one crop. That means that if he brings a worker in to pick Romaine lettuce in January, that personcannot work when the fields are replanted for the summer crop of Durham wheat, northe Fall melon crop. “It's kind of a mess to deal with but it's all we've got,” he said.
Yuma Birding and Field to Feast
Plus the Ultimate Valentines
‘Date Night’
By Stacey Wittig“Unstoppable
Stacey”Travel Writer
As we left the farm, we saw pickers hand-
harvesting lettuce. I couldn’t tell if it were
the same sort of knife that I had used to cut
lettuce earlier. However, I did determine that
they smoked me in efficiency with whatever
tool it was.
Putting the ‘Feast’ into the Field to Feast
tours
Our third stop on the well-organized tour was Arizona Western College to chat
with Yuma’s next generation of farmers. The Culinary Arts student club at the
public community college prepared Yuma’s fresh veggies into a delicious and
healthy lunch. Under the direction of Chef Robert Gideon, the professor of
culinary arts, they laid out quite a feast. We dined on gourmet salads, includ-
ing Sliced Kohlrabi with Yellow Peppers; Beet Greens with Spinach; Field
greens, Beets and Feta Cheese; Pickled Carrot with Jalapeno and more. The
soups were just as garden-fresh and tantalizing.
Field to Feast dates: February 5, 6, 12, 13, 19, 20 and March 4
Price: $55 per person
Before I reveal the “Ultimate Date Night,” I have to tell you about the Yuma
Bird, Nature & History Festival. As you probably know, Yuma is on the
Southern Colorado River, a migratory corridor for birds and waterfowl. I had a
chance to explore some of the over eight wildlife areas in the area with expe-
rienced birders. The festival’s fieldtrips took me to places I would not have
otherwise seen. Hands-on workshops – like making fry bread at Cocopah Tribe
Museum and Cultural Center – and history tours such as the CLUES: History,
Mystery, and Murder Mysteries of Yuma in which I participated at Sanguinetti
House Museum and Gardens were fun and informative. The festival takes
place next year on January 15-17, 2021, and I highly recommend that you put
it on your calendar.
The Ultimate Valentines Date Night
For a month of Sundays, I’ve dreamed ofsitting at a long table set in a lush field deco-rated with the bounty of the farm. I picturedmany people sitting around the table, enjoy-ing courses of farm-fresh foods prepared bygourmet chefs and served by friendlyservers. Sometimes my dream includes asunset. While I was in Yuma, my dream wasrealized with a Sunset on the Ranch Dinner.
Before dinner, I enjoyed a tour of the farm from a wagon pulled behind a
massive Case IH tractor. Afterward, I met new friends as we gathered at long
tables and shared appetizers created by Executive Chef Alex Trujillo. I loved
every aspect of the four-course dinner; however the Le Cordon Bleu-trained
chef also prepares another dinner that I think would be the ultimate
Valentine’s ‘date night’ dinner.

Munds Park Community WatchBy Len Friedlund
The Munds Park Community Watch (MPCW) meetings occur in February,May, August, and November on the third Wednesday of the month. They arealways held at the Pinewood Fire Department (PFD), 6:30 to 8:00, in theevening. Originally the meetings were for the benefit of the MPCW captainsbut in the past few years they have become a Town Hall in format with infor-mation for the entire community. Everyone is invited whether they live herefull time or just come up during the summer.
The organization started out as Neighborhood Watch in 2007 under the guid-ance of the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO). As time went on, the22 mile distance from Flagstaff to Munds Park became a burden on the CCSOand in 2015 the group affiliated with the PFD under Community Services andtherefore the name change to MPCW. The PFD Chief, Josh Tope, alwaysstarts off the meeting with local information and any announcements of futureactivities.
Representatives from CCSO frequently attend and give updates on calls forservice in the community. Statistics for accidents, traffic stops, burglaries, orwhatever 911 calls are received are explained in as much detail as permitted.Plans for security and traffic control are usually shared with the group.
Representatives from the Coconino National Forest (COF) will participatewith information concerning the health of the forest and activities involvingprescribed burns and status of existing managed burns. This is very importantto our residents since we are surrounded by the COF and how the forest goes,so goes our community.
Representatives from the National Weather Service will attend with informa-tion on spring and summer forecasts for the area. This should give MundsPark something of an idea what to expect for weather.
The Coconino County Emergency Management Office will give the resi-dents the latest on plans for emergencies such as fire and floods. One majorproject is the Ready, Set, Go program which urges the registration of phonenumbers and email addresses so emergency information can be received byMunds Park residents whenever events are threatening.
The Coconino County Public Works (CCPW) organization always has alarge contingent with information on road maintenance, snow plowing, floodcontrol issues, Willard Springs Transfer Station, and other items of interest forour community. CCPW has been very responsive to community input on anumber of issues and can always be counted on for cooperation and action.
Periodically, Matt Ryan, who is our District 3 Representative on theCoconino County Board of Supervisors, will be present to give information onsome of the county’s projects and funding issues. Sometimes there are specialpresenters who have areas of concern for the community.
“Of special interest for this next meeting, Art Babbott, currently on theCoconino County Board of Supervisors with Matt Ryan, will be speaking tothe group regarding his running for State Representative this year. Art is anIndependent and is attending meetings in this area in order to introduce himselfto our communities."
The next MPCW meeting will be Wednesday, February 19th, 2020,6:30pm, at the PFD station. If time permits, MPCW items will be discussedand future activities outlined. Currently, the program is in need of captains tohandle 30 to 35 homes in different areas of the park and if anyone is interested, please contact Len Friedlund at (928) 600-3896,

Munds Park Resident
Pinewood News 7February 3, 2020
The Fancy Pants KitchenBy Francine Coles
Happy New Year, Munds Park! 2020! New year, new
decade, and time for new foods, right? I know we can
all get into ruts and cook the same thing over and over
because it’s familiar, you know what to get at the gro-
cery store without a list, and it’s easy. But, I want to
challenge you to try some new recipes, maybe even
some new ingredients that you’ve never used. Why the
heck not??!!
These recipes may inspire you to try something new.
The English Muffin Breakfast Bake originated from The
Barefoot Contessa (so you know it’s good! I love her
recipes!) It combines maple-roasted bacon, cheddar
cheese, chives and eggs for a do-ahead easy breakfast
dish. It’s wonderful for a brunch crowd!
Next is my Chicken Harvest Salad. This has all the
delicious flavors of the season: Chicken, kale, apples,
figs, bacon and goat cheese with a lovely Honey Dijon
Vinaigrette. It’s healthy, light and very pretty.
Finally, I’ve got to have a dessert recipe, so this
Banana Crumb Cake has to be the one! It’s similar to a
coffee cake infused with bananas. It’s got a crumble
running through it and on top. It’s finished with a light
glaze. It’s not dense like a banana bread, and can be
eaten any time of day…I prefer it all day! I love to top it
off with my Salted Caramel Sauce, which can be found
on my website www.thefancypantskitchen.com, along
with photos to show you what the caramel sauce and all
the recipes featured here look like.
Happy cooking, baking and eating!
Francine
English Muffin Breakfast BakeServes 6-8
1 tablespoon unsalted butter, at room
temperature
12 slices good-quality, lean bacon
2 tablespoons maple syrup
6 English muffins, such as Thomas’s
12 large eggs
2 ½ cups whole milk
1 teaspoon kosher salt
¾ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
3 tablespoons minced fresh chives
6 ounces sharp cheddar cheese, grated
(2 cups, lightly packed)
Arrange two racks evenly spaced in the oven. Preheat
the oven to 400 degrees and generously grease the bot-
tom and sides a 9 x 13 x 2-inch baking dish with the but-
ter.
Line one sheet pan with aluminum foil.
Place an ovenproof baking rack on the sheet pan
lined with foil and place the strips of bacon in a single
layer on the rack. (If you don’t have a rack, just place the
bacon directly on the sheet pan.) Bake for 15-20 min-
utes, until the bacon has begun to brown. Remove the
pan and carefully brush the strips of bacon with maple
syrup. Return the pan to the oven and bake for another
5 minutes, until golden brown. Remove the bacon and
allow to drain on a plate lined with a paper towel.
Meanwhile, discard the aluminum foil from the sheet
pan. When cool enough to handle, roughly chop the
bacon and place back on the same sheet pan.
Meanwhile, cut the English muffins into 1” cubes. (Do
not halve them horizontally as you would normally for
the toaster.) Spread the cubes on a second sheet pan
and bake, with the bacon, for 15 minutes, until lightly
browned.
While the bacon and English muffins are in the oven,
whisk together the eggs, milk, salt and pepper in large
bowl.
To assemble, sprinkle half of the bacon, 1 tablespoon
of the chives, and 1 cup of the cheese (in that order)
onto the bottom of the baking dish. Add the English
muffin cubes on top in one even layer. Carefully pour
the egg mixture into the pan, pressing down lightly to
make sure all the muffin cubes are moistened. Top with
remaining bacon, cheese and chives. Wrap well and
refrigerate for at least one hour, or overnight.
Before baking, lower the oven (or set the oven) to
350°F. If the dish has been in the refrigerator overnight,
let it come to room temperature for 15 minutes before
baking. Bake for 50-60 minutes, until puffed and cooked
through. Allow to cool for 10 minutes before serving.

bacon to a paper towel-lined plate.

chicken with thyme, onion powder and garlic
powder. Brush chicken with avocado oil; sea-
son with salt and pepper, to taste. Add chick-
en to grill, and cook, turning occasionally,
until chicken is completely cooked through,
reaching an internal temperature of 165°F,
about 10 minutes.
To assemble the salad, place kale in a large
bowl; top with bacon, chicken, apple, figs,
celery, almonds and goat cheese. Pour the
honey Dijon vinaigrette on top of the salad and gently
toss to combine. Serve immediately.

TowPlows, training help give ADOT an edge when snow hampers travel
Now’s the time for everyone
to Know Snow by reviewing safety tips
PHOENIX – Arizona Department of Transportation snowplows will operate
around the clock when winter storms hamper travel on state highways. For
Interstate 40 between Flagstaff and Williams, the highest freeway stretch in
Arizona, an innovation known as the TowPlow helps give ADOT an edge by
allowing just one driver to clear snow and ice from two lanes.
The TowPlow is a steerable trailer with a 26-foot blade that attaches to the
back of a snowplow. Two TowPlows are assigned to I-40 west of Flagstaff,
an area that often sees intense snowfall.
Able to do the job of two snowplows by clearing a 24-foot-wide path, this
combination lets ADOT clear more lanes in less time using less fuel. When
possible, ADOT will run another snowplow alongside the TowPlow setup,
clearing both lanes and the shoulder at once.
Everyone benefits from having all of ADOT’s two TowPlows and nearly
200 snowplows clearing highways rather than having some taken out of ser-
vice when misguided motorists crash into them. That’s why ADOT’s Know
Snow tips include this simple request: Respect the plow.
Here’s how you do that:
Give them room: Stay well behind any snowplow – a minimum of four
vehicle lengths.
Don’t try to pass: Plow drivers will move over periodically and allow traf-
fic to pass when it is safe to do so.
Think safety: The road behind a snowplow is the safest place to drive.
ADOT’s 400 snowplow drivers undergo extensive training so they can keep
state highways safe. With the potential for winter storms to hit soon, now
it’s time for you to get to Know Snow by reviewing ADOT’s safety tips at
azdot.gov/KnowSnow.
For starters, slow down when roads are slick with snow and ice, leaving
extra room behind the vehicle ahead. Take a fully charged cellphone, warm
clothing and an emergency kit that includes blankets, food and water, medi-
cation and sand or kitty litter.
Check your vehicle before heading out in winter weather, making sure – at a
minimum – that the tires, heater and windshield wipers are in good shape.
Before traveling, research weather conditions to determine whether it would
be smarter to sit out a storm so ADOT’s snowplows can clear highways.
Check road conditions by calling 511 or visiting az511.gov. ADOT’s
Twitter account (@ArizonaDOT(link is external)) and Facebook page (face-
book.com/AZDOT(link is external)) provide real-time information and
interaction. And the free ADOT Alerts app available at
ADOTAlerts.com(link is external) will send critical information, including
alternate routes, should snow and ice close a major highway.
So do you Know Snow in Arizona? If not, now’s the time to start learning
with a trip to azdot.gov/KnowSnow.

The damage above resultedwhen hot ashes were placed
in a plastic trash container.
New Ash Can for residential use.
How to Dispose of Hot Ashes
Hot ashes are extremely dangerous. Many people assume the risk of fire
disappears as the flames die down, but even after several days of your last
fire the wood ashes retain enough heat to ignite a forest fire, house fire, or
other combustible materials in your trash can if improperly disposed.
Special steps need to be taken after the fire has burned out in order to pro-
tect your family and the community.
Follow these steps to keep everyone safe:
1. Carefully empty the hot ashes into a metal container that can be
closed tightly with a metal lid;
2. Douse the ashes with water and cover the lid securely;
3. Store the covered container in a safe place outside of your house and
away from wind and other ignitable or combustible items. Do not dispose
of hot ashes in plastic, paper, or cardboard;
4. Leave ashes in the container for seven days to cool completely;
5. Once the ashes have cooled completely, you can place them in a plas-
tic bag, tie it securely, and dispose of it in your curbside trash can.
6. OR you can now use our Metal Ash Can that will be located in the
back of the Pinewood fire station next to the generator to store your
ashes for your convenience.
If the steps are not followed, you may be putting your family and commu-
nity at risk. Houses have burned, garbage trucks have caught on fire, and
people have been seriously hurt. If you are not positive if the ashes are
completely cool, just wait longer…it might save a life.
2020 a year of change
The Real Estate Industry Is changing“Broker Tidbits” By Bill Spain, Provident Partners Realty
A new year is upon us and like many industries, the real estate business is
facing a huge shift in the traditional real estate day to day business. Huge
monolith companies like Zillow, Redfin, Open Door, Homelight, and now
even Amazon, are invading the relationship oriented real estate market to
siphon off business by offering to buy homes upfront, make it an easy over
in a minute transaction and save you big money. Of course, that usually is
not the case and many of their clients actually undersell their home, losing
10-15% of the homes true value for the ease of a fast transaction.
Some of these new upstart companies refer your “lead” to an established
agent in the specific market and then require a 25-30% referral fee from
the realtor they assign the listing too….Homelight is an example of this
kind of practice. It does not benefit the seller, the buyer or the actual real-
tor…only the marketing referral source itself.
As your real estate partner in Munds Park for the past fifteen plus years,
Provident Partners will continue to bring you the best in consistent adver-
tising and hands-on value from our seasoned agents. We will be there to
support you locally when we contribute back to Munds Park as we have
done since our company inception. When the golf tournament sponsor-
ships are requested, Veterans fundraiser, Firefighters fundraiser, commu-
nity theater, children’s carnival and all of the community improvements
that the Munds Park Business Alliance has devoted to our little town, we
will still be here; participating, leading and giving back to our beloved
Munds Park.
So, we are launching a new program called “Provident Perks.” We value
our relationships with our loyal customers and want to be sure that they
stay with us in this changing real estate climate. Naturally, we need to pro-
vide the value and results which keep us special which is where “Provident
Perks” will come into play. Our agents who have lived and worked in
Munds Park for many years like Regina Bailey, Len Friedlund, Dee Spain,
Ronnie Mills and our newest addition, Melody Riccobono, know Munds
Park well and contribute back to our community often.
Come and See us to find out more! Thank you for your business and for
helping Provident Partners keep investing in Munds Park. Here’s to an
awesome 2020! If January is any kind of measure, it is sure to be a barn
burner of a real estate year!

Possibility Dashed
By Annie Weissman
Single Senior
The New Possibility (NM) and I went out quite a bit the first few weeks.
We went to dinner and I made him dinner. We watched the Ultimate
Jeopardy Championship together. I suggested going to the Rhythm Room
for music, but that wasn’t his thing. Okay, I could go with my friends.
My detective friend Marlene looked it up and found out he had not
filed for divorce. Uh-oh. The first lie.
We had a date for a Friday night, but he canceled and wanted to go
out Sunday night. I was concerned. Married guys are the ones who won’t go
out on Friday and Saturday nights. He invited me to stay at his home on
Sunday night, via a text. He also said he had downloaded my new book, Sex
and the Single Senior and enjoyed the chapter about Mr. Scrabble.
Didn’t his wife live there? Wouldn’t it be awkward, to say the least?
I thought it over and texted him about his wife being there. He answered
that she would be in Las Vegas.
This caused more concerns. Was this guy separated from his wife
and divorcing her? Or was I part of an arrangement they had that he could
have affairs? I thought about it and texted back the next day that I was not
comfortable with that. He texted back that he didn’t feel like socializing for
the time being but that I was a very impressive person. What was the sub-
text of that remark?
I texted him the next day and thanked him for the compliment. I
asked if he liked my book. He texted back that he didn’t. He emailed me
this:
Why? Think of This-
Who would want to be in your company at the risk of ending up in a
book?
That is true. I understand his concern. Writers like me use their personal
experiences as fodder. I caught the anger in the email. I guess he expected a
slam or a tell-all. So another possibility didn’t work out.
My new book, Sex and the Single Senior, is available on Amazon as a
paperback or on Kindle.

Public Service MessageTo the Community of Munds Park:
To assist in delivering your mail in a timely and efficient manner,
please make sure that ALL ordered items include your PO BOX in a second
line of the address (example below), as UPS and FedEx sometimes turn
items over to the Postal Service. Many vendors’ websites reference the US
Postal Service database when customers enter their address, NO Munds
Park Street addresses appear in that database. This sometimes causes the
website to automatically convert the address you enter to some similar
address in Flagstaff. Other times, the website will challenge as incorrect,
but will allow you to click confirm the address as you entered it. At times,
some vendors’ websites will altogether reject the address as entered, and
you must call Customer Service, who can override the website’s rejection
on their end.
FOR ONLINE ORDERS you should always include your PO BOX
number as well as your street address, so you’re covered for whichever
carrier the vendor chooses. One of the following almost always works:
John Doe123 Whatever Street*Use the second line to enter PO BOX#, or it may get cut off in printing by
Vendor if on the first line, the options are below:
•Unit 12345•or Apt 12345•or #12345•or 12345 is my box Munds Park, AZ 86017
Items that arrive without a correct PO BOX number are typically returned to sender around 4pm. Mon-Fri.
Thank you for your attention on this matter.

Speed Awareness SignsBy Tom Eade
Over the past couple of years, the Pinewood Property Owners Association
(PPOA) had received numerous complaints regarding excessive speed lim-
its within Munds Park. Your PPOA discussed various options for addressing
these complaints and approved the purchase and installing speed awareness
signs throughout Munds Park.
The next steps included receiving support from the
Coconino Public Works and their assigning the
County Transportation Planner to work with the
PPOA. They also stressed the need to include
enforcement with the sign implementation for them to
be effective, which Sheriff Driscoll agreed and said he
fully supported.
The County assisted in defining the optimum
locations for sign installation by selecting and
installing traffic counters at 7 locations throughout
Munds Park for counting traffic and recording speeds
in both directions. Based upon that data, four loca-
tions with the highest average speeds were identified
for speed awareness sign
installations.
The sign locations with the highest average 85th per-
centile speeds were:
• East bound on Pinewood Blvd and just east of
Apache Rd (41.4 mph)
• West bound on Pinewood Blvd above Crestline
(34.6 mph)
• East bound on Oak Dr and east of Wintergreen Dr (36.95 mph)
• West bound on Oak Dr and east of Valley Pl (36.45 mph)
The PPOA is currently working with the County on finalizing the encroach-
ment permit, working with a County approved contractor for sign installa-
tion and purchasing the solar speed awareness signs. Once the signs have
been delivered, we will select an installation date based upon contractor
availability and weather conditions and communicate that date to the
Munds Park community.
Please communicate to family, friends and renters that
the speed limit throughout Munds Park is 25 MPH. **We
will be installing the signs in February, as weather permits.

EMERGENCY?
DIAL 911!
From time to time, Pinewood Fire District needs to remind our residents
and visitors of the importance of dialing 911 when they experience an
emergency.
Too often, instead of just dialing 911, folks come to our station when
they need assistance with medical issues. This can be ineffective time
wise and downright dangerous if firefighters are out of the station and
unavailable to help you.
911 systems have been used by emergency response agencies nation-
wide since 1968. Pinewood Fire contracts with a 911 call center that is
staffed 24 hours, 365 days a year. By using 911, you are ensuring the
quickest, most efficient way to reach response crews at any time of any
day.
Our firefighters have numerous job duties, many of which can take
them away from the station. In the event you call 911 when crews are
out, they are alerted by radio through the dispatch system and then will
promptly respond to your emergency. If you don’t utilize 911, instead
opting to go to the fire station, precious time may be spent trying to
make contact with responders and your care may be delayed.
Another item that is important to remember is that Pinewood Fire does
not have a ‘walk-in’ clinic. Many folks come to the station to be
“checked out”, or to ask for medical services that we do not provide.
Our crews are unable to treat and release. In most cases when we pro-
vide medical services, we strongly recommend the patient be transport-
ed via ambulance to the hospital.
Please remember, if you are having a medical emergency or need the
fire department’s help, please just dial 911. Our dispatch system is the
best way for us to deliver the assistance you need in the fastest and
most efficient manner.

Edice (DC) Beverly (Blue)
Harkey, age 84, passed away
peacefully at the Huger Mercy
Living Center, a memory care
community in Phoenix, on De-
cember 16, 2019. DC was born
on March 20, 1935 in Hot
Springs, South Dakota to Edison
and Janice (Adams) Blue and
was the oldest of 3 sisters.
When DC was six, she moved to
Spearfish, SD with her parents
and younger sister, Mary Jo. In
1947, DC’s youngest sister Bon-
nie, was born.
DC’s generous nature was evi-
dent as early as elementary
school where she brought her
friends in for a free ice cream
sundae at the family’s beloved “Blue Drug” soda fountain - not once but
every day. Of course she became a very popular student! It didn’t take long
for her parents to put a stop to the free ice cream, but all the friends re-
mained.
Not only a great friend to all but a stellar student, DC graduated from
Spearfish High School in 1953. In high school, she played the saxophone in
the marching band, and participated in many school activities but she most
loved working on the high school newspaper and yearbook. She spent after
school hours working in her family’s “Blue Drug” store in downtown
Spearfish and taking piano lessons. During this time she also discovered her
“love of the outdoors during PE class and learning to play tennis.”
With her high school diploma in hand and a love of learning, DC continued
her education at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion where she
studied Business Education and was a member of Mortar Board and Kappa
Alpha Theta sorority. She graduated from USD in May 1957 and was mar-
ried shortly after to Marston Holben, also from Spearfish, SD on August 9,
1957.
The following years were filled with joy at the birth of her three children,
Shauna, Beth and Keith, and sorrow at the loss of her father, Edison, to brain
cancer in 1964. The young family lived in Huron, South Dakota until 1968
when they moved to Scottsdale, Arizona where DC and Marston divorced
shortly thereafter.
A lifelong learner, DC earned her master’s degree in counseling from Arizona
State University working as a teacher during the day and attending classes in
the evenings while raising three children as a single mother. After graduate
school, DC worked as a school counselor and then became interested in spe-
cial education, teaching Autistic children.
Her entrepreneurial spirit, creativity and love of learning led her to develop
several educational programs, including a Spanish video series which was
published and used in elementary schools. DC was always interested in new
opportunities to learn and work in education and in other fields like stock
brokerage and sales. DC had the unique opportunity to travel to many of
Arizona’s 20 Indian reservations as an employee of AGS, selling educational
materials and assessments.
DC brought her love of the outdoors with her to the Arizona desert where
she enjoyed tennis, gardening, swimming and in particular, hiking. DC hiked
the Grand Canyon several times and even when the rest of her hiking party
rode donkeys back out the steep canyon, DC with her “can do” attitude,
opted to keep walking instead.
Her positive attitude was one of her most defining characteristics. Even
when faced with challenging times, DC remained optimistic about life and
often told her children to “think positive” and “if at first you don’t succeed -
try again.” Always interested in others, her cheerful and happy personality,
won her many loyal friends. DC loved to entertain at home and was always
finding an occasion to invite friends over for a party or a game of cards. She
loved to socialize and thus became a member of “Who’s Who” in Phoenix, a
singles group, where she met her future husband, Bob Harkey.
A Christian, who was actively involved at Holy Trinity Lutheran church in
Chandler, AZ, DC organized a support group for those dealing with mental
illness and one for divorcees as well as assisting with confirmation classes for
middle school students. DC was a compassionate woman with a spirit of
generosity. She was always a help to others in need, oftentimes caring for a
sick friend or neighbor. She volunteered as a member of the Assistance
League of Phoenix. She enjoyed being a part of Operation School Bell that
provided clothing to school children in need.
Never one to sit idle, after retiring, DC became an accomplished golfer,
learned to watercolor paint and became an aspiring writer with an interest
in children’s books. She loved to travel and explore new places and was an
avid reader. She loved nature and had a fascination with animals. She treas-
ured her four-legged companion, Luck, a black Cairn Terrier, and loved taking
him for walks in the neighborhoods of her two homes in Sun Lakes and
Munds Park, AZ.
As the years progressed, DC was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease at the
age of 75 and continued to do the things she loved, reading and cooking as
long as she was able. Her courage and positivity was never more evident as
she attempted to help with finding a cure for Alzheimer’s, by participating in
several long and intensive clinical trials with the Banner Institute in Phoenix.
DC lived her final three years at the Huger Mercy Living Center, where she
spent most of her time outdoors walking on the shady tree-lined paths that
covered the grounds.
DC is preceded in death by her parents, Edison and Janice Blue (1986, also
from Alzheimer’s) and her grandson, Hunter Holben. She is survived by her
three children, Shauna (Mike) Nash, Beth (Doug) Carlson, Keith Holben, her
two sisters, Mary Jo Blue (Dick Walker, significant other) and Bonnie Carr
(Dale Schaffer), Robert Harkey, and five grandchildren, Caleece, Darian,
Dana, Thomas and Lucas, all of whom will miss her cheerful smile, positive
attitude and loving nature.
A celebration of DC’s life will be held by her immediate family this summer
in the Black Hills of South Dakota, her home state. Reflecting late in life, DC
wrote “If you asked me what I’ve learned that has been the most important
knowledge for me and my endeavors, I would answer “the power of positive
thinking.” Well done, DC. We love you.

Coconino NF updates forest orderprohibiting camping, campfiresaround Flagstaff communities
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz., Jan. 17, 2020 — The Flagstaff
Ranger District has recently updated and renewed
an important forest order for camping and camp-
fire restrictions around the Flagstaff area that will
help reduce the number of abandoned campfires
and keep communities safer.
Forest Order 03-04-20-5-F prohibits any camping
and campfires within Coconino National Forest
around Flagstaff and its surrounding communities.
A detailed map and explanation of exact bound-
aries can be found under the Forest Orders link on
the Coconino National Forest website, or by view-
ing the official forest order here.
Forest Service personnel will begin placing “No
Campfires or Camping” signs in and around the re-
stricted areas to remind the public of these impor-
tant prohibitions and to help identify the area
boundaries.
Boundaries have been expanded by more than
25,000 acres and redefined to account for the ex-
pansion of communities, while using features such
as forest roads as boundaries that are easily recog-
nized on a map.
The expansion and redefining of these boundaries
is also more cohesive and conjoined with areas
that have already been defined by the state and
city as areas where camping and campfires are
prohibited.
“Prohibiting campfires, and sometimes camping,
within areas of Coconino National Forest that sur-
round Flagstaff and its communities are important
steps in lowering the number of abandoned camp-
fires and mitigating wildfires so close to town,”
said Fire Staff Officer James Pettit. “This doesn’t eliminate the threat of severe wildfires, but it will definitely lower it. This forest order also helps reduce unsanitary
conditions found on the forest near town from people illegally using the forest for residential purposes.”
The previous forest order was last updated in 1995 and did not account for the communities surrounding Flagstaff today, nor did it define boundaries that were eas-
ily recognized.
In addition, Coconino National Forest renewed and updated a forest order in August 2019 that prohibits campfires in the Mount Elden/Dry Lake Hills area, expanding
that particular area of campfire restrictions by 2,000 acres, to include popular camping areas such as the Freidlein Prairie Dispersed Campsites. That forest order was
originally signed and implemented nine years ago.
“In 2011, after we implemented the Mount Elden/Dry Lake Hills forest order, we saw a 90 percent reduction in human-caused fires in that area,” said Pettit. “So, we
expect to see a significant reduction in the number of abandoned campfires and human-caused fires with this updated forest order prohibiting camping and camp-
fires around the Flagstaff area.”
Coconino National Forest encourages the public to report illegal activity on the national forest and can do so by calling the local Forest Service law enforcement office
at (928) 527-3511, or by contacting Coconino County Sheriff at (928) 774-4523.

***Emergency Change Notification***Pinewood Fire District has the capacity to use the siren to
communicate a true emergency to our community.
The Omni-directional Siren will now be utilized ONLY in the
event of a TRUE EMERGENCY. The Thorgard Lightning
detection system will remain in place at the fire station. The
Thorgard system includes a set of air horns located on the
roof of the fire station and will still sound when there is light-
ning in the area. The Country Club will then set off their
electronic siren (located near the pro shop) to notify golfers
on the course.
Again, the Omni-directional Siren located at the playground
will now be exclusively used to notify community members
of a true emergency. The activation of this siren will coincide
with a message from the Coconino County Emergency
Notification System.
We encourage everyone to sign up for the County alerts at

The Ultimate ‘Date Night’ Dinner
As I said earlier, this dining experience was named one of the “World’s
Most Unique Dining Experiences” by Fodor’s Travel. The dinner takes place
under the stars in a romantic date grove near Yuma. Unlike others on the
prestigious list, which include dining on a glacier in Canada, atop a tree in
Zambia and upon an opulent Hungarian opera stage, you won’t have to
travel far.
Each course features Medjool dates, one of Yuma’s crops.
Dinner dates: February 28 and March 20
Price: $80 per person

MUNDS PARK COMMUNITY CHURCH UPDATE by Mike Simswww.mundsparkcc.org
What A Community!!
Remember a winter like this? Snow startedaround Thanksgiving, knocking out the power forup to thirty hours and then more snow prior toChristmas! The temperature has been cold. I stillhave a fair amount of snow in my yard and on theroof. Now we’ve had the January thaw and awaitthe unpredictable weather ahead.
The power outage in November will always bememorable to me. Neighbors were checking onneighbors. People were offering help whereverneeded. Those of us with phones were checkingwith those who did not. What better place to livethan in Munds Park?
You don’t have to wait for a weather event in thiscommunity to see us pull together. Many of ourresidents have lost loved ones this winter and theoutpouring of love and concern has been remark-able. Someone on Facebook can post a need forhelp, a request for prayer or a need to purchasefirewood and the neighborhood responds.
Have you heard someone say, “I wish we couldlive in the Good Ole Days.” Living today inMunds Park is living in the “Good Ole Days.”Neighbors care about one another and work tokeep our community safe and a pleasant place tocall home.
As Christ said, “Love your neighbor as you loveyourself,” is lived by our residents in Munds Park.I thank Christ everyday for blessing me with the
opportunity to live in such a wonderful place withcaring friends and neighbors.
As we approach the summer, I hope you willjoin us in some of our events at the church. Be-fore you know it, summer will be upon us and ac-tivities will be plentiful in the community. Pleasejoin us for a Bible study or church service soon.
God bless each of you!
