High Altitude Effects and Tips
High altitude has its benefits, however those coming from lower altitudes and are new to our area, can experience some unusual effects from the high altitude such as dizziness, nausea, headaches and fatigue.
Colorado Springs climbs to an altitude of 6,035 feet. Manitou Springs, just five miles to the west of Colorado Springs, is 6,320 feet. Victor and Cripple Creek are over 9,500 feet. Woodland Park’s altitude is 8460 ft. above sea level. The Charis Bible College
campus is at approximately 8900 feet.
SOME TIPS THAT WILL HELP YOU ACCLIMATE TO THE HIGHER ALTITUDE
Keep in mind these top 6 high altitude tips to help your body adjust and prevent altitude sickness.
1. Stay below 7,000 feet the first day (the city of Colorado Springs is 6,035 feet abovesea level.)
2. Give your body time to adjust. Avoid strenuous exercise the first day.3. Limit alcohol intake. Alcohol binds oxygen and water and robs your body of these two
important nutrients. It also slows the acclimation process.4. Drink more water. The air is drier and your body will dehydrate much more quickly.
The higher up you go, the more water you should drink. A minimum of 1 liter ofwater for every 4 hours of inactivity and 1 liter of water for every 2 hours ofactivity. You will find the more water you drink the better you feel. Dehydration willcause the intensity of symptoms especially headaches.
5. Always travel with a companion. If someone begins to experience severe coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath or chest pain, get him or her to a lower altitude asquickly as possible.
6. The effects of some drugs such as tranquilizers can be greatly increased at higheraltitudes. Be sure to check with your doctor before exerting yourself at higheraltitudes.
Keep in mind that different people will acclimatize at different rates. Make sureall members of your family are properly acclimatized before going higher.
Take it easy; don't over-exert yourself when you first get up to altitude. Lightactivity during the day is better than sleeping because respiration decreasesduring sleep, exacerbating the symptoms.
The acclimatization process is inhibited by dehydration and over-exertion
If you have any breathing difficulties if may be best for you to live in Colorado Springs, and come up to school for the 4-5 hours a day and then return to Colorado Springs.
Note: When baking be sure to follow high altitude instructions.

Drive Safely in the Snow Driving in the winter means changes in the way you drive. Slow, Turn, Go!
Cars go, turn, and stop. These should be done separately on wintery surfaces. When approaching a turn, first, gently apply the brakes in advance of the turn. After taking your foot off the brake, coast through the corner while turning the wheel. Gently accelerate once you have completed the turn – and only after completing the turn. This may challenge the most experienced driver.
Smooth and steady. Don’t make abrupt turns, stops or acceleration
Prepare your car for Winter Battery Tire wear and air pressure – you’ll need good tread for winter driving. Antifreeze level and freeze line Don’t let your gas tank get below a quarter of a tank.
In Winter keep these items in your car in addition to the normal items.
Ice scraper and snow brush Properly inflated spare tire, wheel wrench and tripod jack Shovel Bag of salt or cat litter for better tire traction or to melt snow Flashlight and extra batteries First aid kit Windshield cleaner- antifreeze type Matches in a waterproof container Nonperishable, high-energy foods like unsalted, canned nuts, dried fruits and hard
candy Bottled water Winter coat Blankets, mittens, socks and hats Snow Boots
