OverviewReading is a skill that involves several

components. It starts with sounds and proceeds to the areas of fluency and comprehension. Reading is a

broad area but during this presentation I will explain the five essential components.

Phonemic Awareness InstructionPhonemes are the smallest units

constituting language.

Phonemic awareness refers to the ability to focus on and manipulate

phonemes in spoken words.

Phonics InstructionPhonics instruction teaches children

the relationships between the letters of written language and the individual

sounds of spoken language. It teaches children to use these relationships to

read and write words.

Fluency Instruction

Fluency is the ability to read a text accurately and quickly. They group words quickly to help them gain meaning from

what they read.

Vocabulary InstructionVocabulary refers to the words we must know to communicate

effectively. Vocabulary plays an important part in leaning to read.

Listening ,Speaking, Reading, Writing

Comprehension Instruction

Comprehension is the reason for reading. If readers can read the

words but do not understand what they are reading, they are

not really reading.

Summary/Conclusion

The five parts of the reading process are crucial in the process of learning to read. Every part is

equivalent such as pieces of a puzzle.
