S= SET UP THE PAPER

• a. Put name, and the date in the upper right hand corner• b. Add a title (topic).• c. Draw a line down the length of the

paper- 1 ½ inch from the red line.

T=TAKE NOTES • a. Paraphrase the lecture, shorten up the unnecessary info. • b. Use selective listening/reading to decide important

information. If lecture/text strays from the topic don’t be fooled.• c. Use whatever it takes to activate your own memory

system( capital letters, underlining, arrows, or pictures)• d. Don’t get hung up on spelling, as long as you know what

it means.• e. Use abbreviations, come up with your own short hand

such as symbols (> < &) and abbreviations (mtn for mountain, btn for between, obj for objective, bw for bell work)

A=AFTER CLASS

a. Edit your notes (reread them and look for places to edit, delete or clarify (fix mistakes, add missing info.)

b. Underline or use a highlighter for important points (“This will be on the test” items or teacher clues).

c. Note points that you need to clarify (ask teacher/peer).

d. Now fill in the question column with questions, symbols (stars, smiley faces, pictures), memory clues (ex: PEMDAS).

R= REVIEW NOTES

a. review notes often (after class at least once a week, and before the test). b. Cover question column with paper and review out loud. c. Shorten answers (memory trick)d. Work with partner (Quiz-Quiz-Trade).e. reflect: summarize the notes, relate the subject to yourself and your personal experience.

S= SUMMARY

a. Select key points from the lecture/reading (important info., tested info., main ideas).

b. Write 3-4 sentences capturing the key points.
