What is RDF?

A format for precise descriptions Machine readable Potentially machine understandable International, interoperable, extensible

Primary use for metadata Statements about things Provides explicit meanings for the

statements

Triple structure

Each statement has three parts: Subject — the thing you’re describing Predicate — a property or quality of the

thing Object — information about the thing

Example: eg:Presentation dc:creator “Philip Shaw” eg:Presentation dc:format “Powerpoint” eg:Presentation dc:language “English”

Lofty aspirations

Precise descriptions allow inference Search: “long MPEG about big cats” Found triples:

eg:Tigers.mpeg dc:format “video/mpeg”eg:Tigers.mpeg dc:subject cat:Tigereg:Tigers.mpeg dcterms:temporal “20

minutes”

RDF applications

RDF Site Summary (RSS) Promotion and syndication of “what’s

new”eXtensible Metadata Platform (XMP)

Adobe workflow and asset managementFriend Of A Friend (FOAF)

Name dropping for geeks

RDF for the people

Creative Commons http://www.creativecommons.org/ Licence and open sharing

MusicBrainz http://www.musicbrainz.org/ Community music catalogue

Open Clipart http://www.openclipart.org/

Other developments

Google video search http://video.google.com Metadata format not evident Indexes closed caption text

Google personalised searches http://labs.google.com/personalized Uses metadata about you to shape

results

MKSearch

Only indexes schema-based metadataPlatform independent, open source, freeRDF storage and queryHighly configurable indexing spiderIndexes HTML, will support RSS and RDFDublin Core and e-GMS schemaPlans to add SOMA and others

Web crawler

Based on the JSpider engineCustom metadata indexing plugins

Process source format Convert to RDF

Supports the robots exclusion protocolMulti-threaded, but with throttlingConfigure for one or more sites

Reasoning machines

Write 3 human language queries Typical of your video work or interests Like the tiger example

What metadata are inferred? SOMA elements SOMA vocabularies

Write RDF triples that match the query
