This journal compiles the documents of the extension service projects rendered by the Mapúa Institute of Technology
through the Office of the Social Orientation and Community Involvement Program (SOCIP) for the year 2010. We would
like to extend our gratitude to the collaborative efforts of the faculties, students and non-teaching personnel.
This journal features the strengths of the Institute in transmitting its innovative and scientific expertise into extension
service programs for the community. The programs cover the areas of education, livelihood and entrepreneurship,
technology, care for health, environmental awareness and preservation, recreation, and career development. The
successful outcomes of these services prove the capability of the Institute in delivering quality service to the community.
This endeavor establishes a goal that the Institute, through the untiring effort of the SOCIP, fulfills its social responsibility

Continuing Education in Science and Technology 2010 Batch I (High School Teachers in NCR, nearby provinces and Middle East) Topics: Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and Computer
OBJECTIVES of the extension program are as follows:
1. Assist partner HS in improving competencies of teachers and students through continuing education on key areas of science and technology
2. Promote Mapúa as the Institute of choice for tertiary technological education
3. Improve quality of inputs into Mapúa programs 4. Promote Mapúa Makati programs and provide tour to
the participants

PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION
The Admissions Office led the Academic Group in the implementation of the project. Work assignments were distributed to different academic groups, which are as follows:
1. Contacting of partner HS, preparation of participants’ list, preparation of copies of modules, security permit during event proper – Admissions
2. Logistics preparation (registration, food, certificates, printing of forms, distribution of modules, etc) – Admissions & SOCIP
3. Consolidation of programs, documentation support and monitoring of activity – Admissions
4. Preparation of modules and of training – Admissions, Math Dept., Physics Dept., School of CHE-ChM and SOIT

The Admissions Office sent out invitations to 145 partner high schools (from NCR, nearby provinces and Middle East Filipino schools). The schools were given the option to choose from 2 schedules; Batch 1 – April 14 to 16 and Batch 2 – July 20 to 22. Unlike the previous years, the Mapúa Summer experience 2009 was conducted in three days. Modifications in the activities and scheduling were also made by the admissions office based on the comments of the previous participants. The Psychology department provided team building activities for the participants at the start of the seminar-workshop. Animation seminars were conducted by the MAS department while the Robotics Team demonstrated and gave insights about robotics to the students. All of the seminars were conducted half day to not bore the participants like the previous years.
One hundred three (103) PHSs were identified to be part of the activity. Letters of invitation were sent to the Principal’s/Guidance Offices of these high schools through facsimile, email and/or registered mail during the last week of December 2009. Before the start of the activity proper, 19 out of the 103 invited high schools pre-registered for the seminar/workshop, with a total of 93 incoming fourth year high school students as participants.

The Seminar-Workshop Proper
The participants were divided into twenty four (20) groups
during the three-day seminar/workshop, Grouping of
participants was made based on the similarity of subjects
completed and to be taken during their junior and senior
years, respectively. Likewise, they were clustered in a manner
that would ensure that all participants went through the
lectures, experiments or hands-on activities of the five topics.
This year’s seminar featured 5 topics per day compared to the
3 topics per day from the previous years.

Gawad Kalinga (Outreach Program) CE-EnSE Graduating Class 2nd Quarter SY 2010-2011 The Gawad Kalinga Outreach Program held in GK Tabora,
Tandang Sora, Quezon City is one of the school’s activities
participated by the CE-EnSE Graduating Class of second
quarter school year 2010-2011.
Upon our arrival at the GK site, Mr. Tito Santos, the project
coordinator, gave us an orientation about Gawad Kalinga
and lead an opening prayer. According to him, each house
may cost around PhP80,000.00 each, were built through
“bayanihan” scheme that help lessens its labor cost. At the
end of his talk, he extended his deepest gratitude towards
us who unselfishly shared our time and effort with them.
After the orientation, students were grouped according to
the work assigned to them. Some of the construction
activities that the students participated are plastering of
exterior walls, sieving of sand, preparation of concrete,
shovelling and transporting of the backfilling materials.

Habitat for Humanity (Outreach Program)
Habitat for Humanity is a very common activity held every
term usually organized by the CE-EnSE Graduating Class. Last
September 10, 2010, the said outreach program activity was
conducted at Karisma Ville Malabon City led by the CE-EnSE
Graduating Class 1st term SY 2010-2011. It was participated
by the CE-EnSE Faculty members led by Engr. Divina
Gonzales, the graduating students and other CE-EnSE batches
who volunteered.
Upon arriving at the location, we have been acquainted to
Engr. Kit Lacerda, the project Engineer at the site. Together
with the homeowners who keep their posts on helping the
build, Engr. Kit welcomed all of us willingly and gave us a brief
tour and orientation on the activities that will be conducted at
the site. He had reminded all of us the precautions on being
free from hurt and injuries.
The volunteer students as well as the faculty members and
the people of Malabon were with the activities that were
scheduled on that day. The professors lend a hand in mixing
of the gravel and sand and hauling of the mixture to the
preferred location. The male students help out to the said
activity and assisted the homeowners on the concrete pouring
of slab at one of the house.

The female students and professors on the other hand,
engaged in painting of the exterior walls of one block houses.
Some students tried their efforts on welding of connections of
bars and bending of bars used for the cast in place walls.
The activities were only held for half a day but the
accomplishments are a milestone. According to Engr. Kit, our
accomplishments recorded were hauling of sand, one full block
painted wall, and assisting in concrete pouring on one ground
floor slab, 20 square metres. Also, he and the homeowners
were very grateful a lot of students and organizations
volunteers to help on the habitat sites around Manila since the
workers are the homeowners itself. On habitat as well, they
are using their owned designed hollow blocks which is called
interlocking blocks.

Evaluation of Financial Proposals for Architectural and Engineering Design Studies of Manila Cathedral
Two financial proposals for the architectural and design
studies of the Manila Cathedral were given to the Extension
Service Coordinator of CE-EnsE for evaluation. These two
proposals are the (1) Revised Financial Proposal for the
Detailed Architectural and Engineering Studies and Design of
the Manila Cathedral and the (2) Technical and Financial
Proposal for Consulting Services for the Structural
Investigation and Detailed Design of Retrofitting and Repair of
the Manila Cathedral. Both documents were submitted by Dr.
Angel Lazaro.
These proposals cannot be fairly evaluated due to the lack of
its basis since necessary documents such as the architectural
and structural plans of the cathedral were not provided. Also,
no results of ocular inspection were attached with the
proposals. For future submission of financial proposals, it is
recommended that the scope of works with schedule and
costing be specifically enumerated, accompanied by pertinent
data and documents.

Chemistry Review: Lecture on Solutions and Stoichiometry 11- August 2011 The faculty members of the School of Chemical Engineering
and Chemistry held a chemistry review for high school
students in PUPLHS in Sta. Mesa, Manila last August 11, 2010.
The chemistry review was about solutions and stoichiometry.
The activity was well-participated with a large number of
students numbering to 128 participants.
The participants were able to learn the basic concepts of
solutions and stoichiometry. They were presented with
methods of expressing concentrations of solutions, balancing
chemical equations, limiting and excess reactants, and percent
yield. The students were very eager to learn more about the
topics. They showed great interest and appreciation by asking
questions.
The student participants evaluated the activity. The School of
ChE-Chm got an average of 4.778 out of 5.00.

Seminar/Workshop on the Preparation of Papaya Soap
6 February 2010
The Faculty members of the School of Chemical Engineering
and Chemistry together with students from the ChE-Chm
THINKERS conducted a free Seminar Workshop on the
Preparation of Papaya Soap at Barangay 872, Zone 95 District
6 Pandacan Manila last February 6, 2010.
Before the actual workshop, all facilitators and students
underwent simulation training for the preparation of Papaya
soap. This is to prepare the facilitators from any possible
questions that may be asked by the members of the
community.
The participants were able to learn proper techniques on how
to prepare Papaya soap, including the precautions on how to
handle different raw materials (chemicals). Possible suppliers
of the chemicals and the financial marketing aspects if the
opted to make this as their source of income was included in
the training. Papaya soap samples were distributed to the
participants at the end of the seminar/workshop and the
residents were allowed to bring home the papaya soap they
prepared.

the seminar workshop.

Science Review: Lecture on Biotechnology

The Faculty members of the School of Chemical Engineering
and Chemistry together with SOCIP coordinator Mr. Jo held a
Science Review for High School students in Carlos P. Garcia
High School in Pandacan, Manila on February 15, 2010. The
Science Review was entitled “Lecture in Biotechnology”. The
activity was well-participated with a large number of students
numbering to 84 participants.
The participants were able to learn the basic principles of
Biotechnology. They were presented with advances and
techniques in DNA analysis. The students really were very
eager to learn more about the topic. They showed great
interest and appreciation by asking queries about the
applications of Biotechnology.

EECE Outreach: BASIC ELECTRONICS
14 August- 18 September 2010
The School of Electronics, Electrical, and Computer
Engineering offered a 5-week Extension Service Program
entitled “BASIC ELECTRONICS” with recipients from our
adopted community, Pandacan, Manila.
During week 1 of the program, Engr. Jose Cardenas, Engr.
Edna Benibe, and Engr. Ramon Garcia provided the
participants insights with the proper use and functions of
multimeter, Different types of fuse, bulbs, and switches,
resistor color coding, resistance connections and testing were
also introduced among others.
Week 2 of the program was divided into morning and
afternoon sessions. Engr. Ernesto Vergara, Engr. Conrad Ostia
and Engr. Emma Ruth Tiong supplied the participants with
knowledge about transformers, coding and testing of
capacitors, basic operations of diodes and transistors.
Afternoon session were administered by Engr. Mary Ann
Latina, Engr. Joseph Bryan Ibarra, and Engr. Carlos Hortinela
with SCR, Relays, and a DC power supply as the main subject
of the discussion. Students from MICRO organization offered
assistance and participated in the said activity as student
facilitators.

During week 2 with Engr. Hortinela and Engr. Latina providing
assistance and supervision
PCB Layout, Etching, and Drilling which were hands-on in
nature were the activities during Week 3 with Engr. Leonardo
Valiente, Engr. Flordeliza Valiente, and Engr. Glenn Magwili as
faculty facilitators and JPCS as student facilitators.
Week 4 were dedicated in the creation, assembly, testing and
troubleshooting of a DC power supply. Engr. Glenn Avendano,
Engr Janette Fausto, and Engr. Marloun Sejera supervised the
activity together with students from IECEP-MIT.
The EECE Extension Program was concluded on the 5th week
with a written practical Exam, and a post evaluation which
were administered by Engr. Jaye Balbin, Engr. Randall
Evangelista, and Engr. Vic Chua.

Ladderized Program for Pandacan Adopted Community and Virlanie Foundation 5 September 2009- 13 March 2010
The first training for the ladderized program offered by the
School of EECE as part of its community extension service is
the Branch Circuit Wiring. The training was conducted last
September 5 to September 19, 2009 at W304, Mapua,
Intramuros Campus.
On the first session, principles on basic electricity such as
electrical components, electrical wiring symbols, basic wiring
tools and basic electrical safety practices were discussed to
the learners. Sample computations in Ohm’s Law and
demonstration on the use of tools were also included in the
discussion.
On the second session, the concept of branch circuit was
introduced to the learners. They were taught the proper
selection of power receptacle outlets, selection of branch
circuit conductors as well as conductor sizes, selection of wire
splicing, selection of junction and utility boxes, selection of
proper lighting fixtures, selection of correct switching device,
and the proper selection of circuit breakers and fuses.

The third session was allotted for the hands-on training of the
learners. They performed exercises like wire splicing and
joints, series and parallel connection of bulbs, using one way,
three way, and four way switches to control a single bulb.
The learners were also taught how to assemble an improvised
tester. The learners were also taught how to interpret
electrical plans.
The second training offered by our school is the Basic
Electronics. The training was conducted last January 23 to
February 20, 2010 at W304, Mapua, Intramuros Campus.
On the first session, the learners were taught how to use the
Multimeter. They were also taught basic electronic symbols
and components such as battery, switches, incandescent
bulbs, fuses, resistors, capacitors, and the likes.
On the second session, the learners were taught the basic
principles and operation of components such as transformers,
diodes, and transistors. The facilitators also demonstrated the
use of basic electronic construction tools such as soldering
iron, de-soldering pump, drills, and etc. The learners were
also taught how to design and etch the printed circuit board
layout of simple electronic circuits.

The third session is allotted for the hands-on training. The
learners were given a circuit and were ask to design the PCB
layout as well as to construct the actual circuit. Included were
“how to” read, interpret, and translate a simple electronic
circuit into an actual circuit and soldering of electronic
components on a printed circuit board.
The last training offered by the School of EECE for academic
year 2009 to 2010 is the Short Term Computer Fundamentals
Course in Microsoft Office.
On the first session, the learners were oriented on the basic
parts of a computer such as power supply, mother board, and
etc., and its peripherals such as monitors, keyboard, mouse,
and etc. The learners were also given an overview of
Microsoft Office programs.
On the second session, the learners were taught word
processing using Microsoft Word. Basic operation and
functions of different MS WORD icons were discussed. The
learners were also given drills and exercises to work on MS
WORD documents.
On the third session, MS EXCEL was introduced. The learners
were taught MS EXCEL commands and to create MS EXCEL
Worksheet.
The last session was allotted for MS POWERPOINT. The
learners were taught “how to” basic features on MS
POWERPOINT. They were taught how to create Powerpoint
presentation with basic and animated text, photos, and other
objects. The learners were also given a practical exam before
certificates were awarded.

Seminar on Geohazard Awareness and Preparedness for the Residents of Pandacan , Manila March 13, 2011
The Department of Earth Science and Engineering (DESE)
conducted a seminar on Geohazard Awareness and
Preparedness for the residents of Pandacan, Manila last March
13, 2010 at the Plenary Hall South Bldg of the Institute. This is
an information and education campaign (IEC) aimed at
increasing the awareness and preparedness of the Institute’s
adopted community, i.e. Pandacan, Manila, on the possible
effects of geologic hazards.
The seminar focused on three main geohazard topics which
have or could pose significant effects on people’s lives. The
topics are on earthquakes, floods and El Nino/ La Nina
phenomenon. The resource speakers were faculty members
from DESE namely Prof. Ma. Elveta C. Comsti, Dr. Karlo L.
Queano, and Dr. Maybellyn A. Zepeda. Prof. Mark Anthony
Pernito also gave technical insights particularly on matters
related to safety of buildings and other structures in response
to earthquakes. Prof. Marianne Fernandez acted as the master
of ceremonies and the moderator of the open forum.

The lecture of Prof. Comsti focused on floods and the causes
of the flooding experienced from typhoon Ondoy. Moreover,
the different ways by which the effects of flooding could be
mitigated was discussed. The talk of Dr. Queano centered on
ground shaking, ground rupture, tsunami, and liquefaction.
Furthermore, he emphasized on what should be done in case
an earthquake occurs. Dr. Zepeda discussed climate change,
global warming and the El Nino/ La Nina phenomena and their
various effects.

Dr.Queano shows the distribution of the most damaging earthquakes that hit the Phils.
Prof. Fernandez led the open forum where the participants posted
several questions especially regarding how their barangays could
respond to eventualities posted by these geohazards. Several points
were raised on how proper waste segregation could be implemented
in the barangay level. This concern is very important in mitigating
the effects of flooding in the metropolis. Indeed, there was a lively
discussion.
All the concerns and issues presented were addressed by the
lecturers and other EMSE faculty members who were present during
the event. Recommendations were also given to specific concerns.
Posters and brochures made available by some government entities
such as the Mines and Geosciences Bureau-DENR, NAMRIA-DENR,
PHIVOLCS-DOST and PAGASA-DOST as well as printed copies of the
lectures were distributed to the attendees.

Organizational Development and Improvement of the Financial Systems of PBSP Project (Planning and Analysis)
Faculty of the School of IE-EMG was given an opportunity to
handle Organizational Development ((OD) and Improvement
of Operations and Financial System of a PBSP Project. Being
Volunteer Advisers (VA) of respective areas, they are required
to make plans for the outputs / deliverables. The plans cover
the following:
For Organizational Development:
1. Come-up with job descriptions and job specifications
for the existing positions;
2. Conduct initial job evaluation for the existing positions;
3. Come-up with proposed organizational chart;
4. Establish relevant HR policies and procedures
For Operations Management
1. Standardization and documentation of production
processes.

During the first visit in San Pablo City (on August 13, 2010) ,

questionnaires were left to the concerned people for

With the second visit on October 5, 2010, the team acquired
additional data from the questionnaires left during the first

INSTALLATION OF 3kW PICO-HYDROELECTRIC PLANT IN BARANGAY TALITE, SITIO HENALONG (PHASE 1: 2ND VISIT)
Last July 23 – 28, 2010 the Extension Service team of the
School of Mechanical Engineering, composed of faculty
members and student members of the American Society of
Mechanical Engineers Mapua Student Section went to
Barangay Talite, Aguinaldo, Ifugao to install a 3 KVA Pico-
hydroelectric plant to illuminate the community of Sitio
Henalong. This is a joint project of ASME through its Diversity
Action Grant (DAG) and Extension Service of the School of
Mechanical Engineering. The objectives of the second visit
were:

Barangay Talite consists of several sitios. The two sitios
involved in this project were Sitio Henalong and Sitio Gabot.
Most of the civil structures were installed in Sitio Henalong,
such as the powerhouse, fore bay, penstock, headrace and
tailrace. Sitio Henalong and Gabot consist of 15 and 12
households, respectively. Sitio Gabot is 600 meters away from
the nearest house of Sitio Henalong and because of this
distance which needs a lot of electrical wires to bring the
electricity to the community of Sitio Gabot, the M.E. extension
service team would electrify first the household of Sitio
Henalong (the first phase of the project).

The contribution and role of the locals in this project as agreed
upon during the meeting with barangay and municipal officials
was provision of the labor force in the construction of most of
the civil works such as the riprapping of the fore bay, head
race and tailrace. They also provided local materials such as
wood and bamboo for electrical posts. They were also
responsible for the clearing and preparation of the roads to be
used by the extension service team to install the main
electrical line.

The Tramway that transports goods and people
Rip-rapping is a local technology on which the Ifugao are
known for hundreds of years. They used this technology in
building the magnificent rice terraces in Banaue, Hungduan
and Mayoyao. Even today, their skills are still used in the
construction of vertical and horizontal structures in the famous
mountainous area of northern Philippines such as Baguio,
Tagaytay and Benguet. It is an art and science of forming the
stone (a type of volcanic rock, adobe in native dialect) into a
strong wall that could prevent the soils and pebbles from
eroding due to the weight and forces from water flow.

The M.E. extension service team was assigned to lay-out the
wiring of the individual household, supervise the constriction
of the civil works and give instructions to the locals on what to
do when the team is not in the community. Through constant
communication, using text messaging, the team can monitor
the progress of the civil works and decide on when to
schedule the next visit. Before the team leaves the community
the following civil works is under construction and subject to
improvement.

PICO HYDRO POWER SYSTEM IN KINABUHAYAN,
DOLORES, QUEZON (1st VISIT)
Last October 22 – 25, 2010 the Extension Service team of the
School of Mechanical Engineering, composed of faculty
members and M.E. students (who are conducting their
undergraduate thesis) visited the Pico-hydro site in
Kinabuhayan, Dolores, Quezon. The visit aims to do the
following:
1. To bring the Pico-hydroelectric plant (designed
and fabricated by thesis group) near the site
and to turn-over the said equipment to the
barangay officials of Kinabuhayan, Dolores,
Quezon.
2. To layout the location of the intake, penstock
and turbine in the site.
3. To determine the location of the foundation
that will hold the penstock and the turbine-
generator set-up
4. To dig the location of the foundation.
Kinabuhayan, Dolores, Quezon Barangay Hall
Mt. Banahaw is located along the boundary of Laguna and
Quezon provinces. The mountain and its environment are
considered sacred by the local residents because of its "holy
water", which allegedly have beneficial qualities, issuing forth
from local springs. These are composed of unique, natural
features such as rock formations, caves, falls and springs with
shrines erected in, on or around them. It is a traditional
pilgrimage site for locals and tourists, especially during the
Lenten Season, because it is considered by many to be a "holy
mountain".

Last October 22 the thesis group advised by Engr. Fred
Salazar of the School of Mechanical Engineering went to
Kinabuhayan, Dolores in Quezon to deliver the materials and
equipment needed for the installation of the Pico-hydropower
system in one of the falls located in Kinabuhayan. This Pico-
hydropower system will produce an estimated power of 1.5kW
that will provide lighting in the grotto where devotees tend to
have an overnight stay.

resident tour guide in the area, the group went to the
barangay hall to store the materials needed in the installation
of the project.
Engr. Salazar was planning and discussing to the group the design
and orientation of the foundation for the penstock. Due to rough
terrain along the way to the site, Engr. Salazar decided not to go
along with the group; instead Engr. Mark Balberona takes charge on
the planning upon reaching the location.

program with the Mechanical Engineering Department of the
Camarines Sur Polytechnic Colleges – Nabua Campus (CSPC-
Nabua). The said event was sponsored by the American
Society of Mechanical Engineers – Mapua Student Chapter
through their Student Action Grant. It was also attended by

BASIC ARC WELDING SEMINAR AND TRAINING
Last March 12 -13, 2010 the members of the Faculty of School
of Mechanical Engineering, Mapua Institute of Technology,
conducted a “BASIC ARC WELDING SEMINAR AND TRAINING”
for the residents of Pandacan, Manila (adopted community of
MIT). The said event aims to educate the participants on the
basics of the different types of welding technology that are
commonly used and available in the Philippines. On the second
day of the said event, there was a workshop or a hands-on
training on the basic techniques in arc welding. The School
also invited some experts, as resource person and trainers,
from SPP Corporation lead by Engr. Ed Cortez. The said
company is a service provider of San Miguel Corporation
specializing on welding of steel cylinders, pipes, plates and SS
process tanks, particularly TIG welding.

PICO HYDRO POWER SYSTEM IN KINABUHAYAN, DOLORES, QUEZON (2nd VISIT)
Last November 16-17, 2010 the Extension Service team of the
School of Mechanical Engineering, composed of faculty
members and M.E. students (who were conducting their
undergraduate thesis) visited the Pico-hydro site in
Kinabuhayan, Dolores, Quezon. The visit aims to do the
following:
1. To do the civil works in the turbine intake such as
clearing and cleaning of the site to make the
intake deeper and prevent the foreign object from
entering penstock.
2. To divert the flow of water while clearing the
intake and allow curing of the concrete.
3. To be fit the penstock with the foundation and
verify some necessary adjustment on the bolt
arrangement and measurements of elbows and
fittings.
The thesis group of Engr. Salazar went to Kinabuhayan,
Dolores, Quezon for the second visit to the Pico-hydro Power
System Project. The group arrived at around 8:00 in the
morning to start the construction of the fore bay and intake of
the Pico-hydropower system.

INSTALLATION OF 3kW PICO-HYDROELECTRIC PLANT IN BARANGAY TALITE, SITIO HENALONG (PHASE 1: 3rd VISIT)
Last August 6 – 9, 2010 the Extension Service team of the
School of Mechanical Engineering, composed of faculty
members and student members of the American Society of
Mechanical Engineers Mapua Student Section went to
Barangay Talite, Aguinaldo, Ifugao to finish the first phase of
the electrification project of Sitio Henalong. The aim of this
visit was to finish the installation of the 3 kVA Pico-
hydroelectric plant. The visit was scheduled because the team
was informed by the locals that they have already finished the
construction of the civil works.

were tasked to finish the following civil works;

- Digging of the canals for headrace and tailrace.
- Installation of electrical posts
- Building of the powerhouse

After the inspection of the civil works, the team started to
connect the generator to the main electrical line. Then, the
household wirings were connected to the main electrical line
and the electrical lamps (CFL lamp) were distributed to the
individual households to test the whole system. Each
household was given 2 to 3 units of CFL lamp with a rating of
11 watts each.

Testing of the Turbine-Generator Set-up
As a result, the first phase of this project was finished
smoothly, because of the full cooperation of the locals and
supports from their barangay and municipal officials. During
the actual loading, the needle valve was not fully opened and
the full flow of water through the turbine was not used. The
actual electrical loads were smaller than the rating capacity of
the machine and the available power from the water in the
site. It is then recommended to continue the phase two of the
project which is the electrification of Sitio Gabot to
compensate the extra-power of the Pico-hydroelectric plant
installed in Sitio Henalong. This proposal will also give stability
and protection to the system from over-speeding and sudden
change of the load.

Phase 1: 2ND PICO-HYDRO PROJECT IN IFUGAO
Last April 7 – 11, 2010 the Extension Service Team of the
School of Mechanical Engineering went to Aguinaldo, Ifugao to
conduct the Phase 1 of the 2nd PICO-HYDRO PROJECT IN
IFUGAO. The Phase 1 of the project aims to:
- Look for potential site of Pico–hydro in Aguinaldo,
Ifugao that is near to Barangay Majlong (where the 1st
Pico-hydro Project was built).
- Dialogue with the barangay officials of the said location
regarding the commitment, responsibilities and
obligations of each party (between the locals and
Mapua).
- Estimate the head (height of the water source) and the
available capacity of water (volume flow rate of water).
The said project was initiated by the American Society of
Mechanical Engineers – Mapua Student Chapter through their
Diversity Action Grant (ASME-DAG) and with the help of the
Extension Service Team from the Faculty of the School of
Mechanical Engineering of Mapua.
Potential Site:
To easily maintain, inspect and visit all the Pico-hydro projects
made by Mapua the potential site for the second project
should be near from the first project (in Majlong, Aguinaldo,
Ifugao). Aside from this, it allows ease in communication with
the locals, rationalized technology transfer and trim down the
training of the locals.

On the technical aspect, the team is looking for a high head
water source (elevated water source of around 20 m) so that
the team could install an impulse-type turbine because of its
simplicity in construction. Impulse turbine can be installed
open to the atmosphere while the reaction type turbine
requires a pressurized casing to stabilize its operation and to
prevent cavitation.

Dialogue with the Barangay Officials:
Before the visitation of the site, the team conducted a
courtesy visit to the municipal hall of Aguinaldo, Ifugao and
had a conversation with the Vice-Mayor Gaspar B. Chilagan.
The topics of the discussion with Hon. Chilagan were all about
the objectives of the project, the approximate budget allotted
by Mapua (which is acquired from ASME-DAG) and the
obligations and responsibilities between Mapua and the locals.
According to Engr. Luna, Mapua is expecting for the share of
the community (locals) in this project in the form of financial
assistance from their community funds and/or supports such
as labor work during the construction phase, so that they
could have a sense of ownership of the project.

After meeting with the municipal officials, the team proceeds
to the site inspection together with Manong Noel Paynohon (a
person from the first hydro project in Majlong) and the
barangay councilors of Barangay Talite (also in the
municipality of Aguinaldo) which serves as our guide. After the
site inspection the team had a dialogue with the barangay
officials and discussed with them the purposed of the said
visit, the tentative time table of the project and the things that
Mapua can provide in the project.

The locals had a positive reply during the conversation and
the two parties (Mapua and the people of Barangay Talite)
resolute to the drafting of the Memorandum of Agreement
(MOA). Engr. Luna was assigned to draft the MOA and this will
be ratified either through mail or through communication
between Engr. Galera and Manong Noel.

STREET CRISIS MANAGEMENT 5
Last February 28, 2010, the Physical Education department
conducted an extension service at Barangay 867 Zone 95 in
Pandacan, Manila.
Dubbed as “Street Crisis Management 5”, the activity was a
seminar on basic knife defense and advance arresting
techniques. Many of the Tanods and Kagawads enjoyed and
learned in this seminar because for them it is a basic tool for
the community as a protection against the bad elements in the
society.

Street Crisis Management VI
Last September 25, 2010 the Physical Education Department
extended their service program to the different barangays in
Pandacan, Manila. It was a successful campaign for the
development of the activity which entitled “Street Crisis
Management 6” which includes advanced Disarming and
Arresting techniques.
The Brgy.officials and Brgy. tanods of each barangay
participated well and learned the proper way of disarming the
knife and pinning the opponent to the ground. The PE
teachers also performed their corresponding tasks to that
extension service such as assisted in demonstration, peace
keeper, lecturer, and photographer.

STREET CRISIS MANAGEMENT 7 It was a successful outreach program for Physical Education
Department when they reached out and executed their “Street
Crisis Management 7” in Carlos P. Garcia High School in
Pandacan, Manila where in High School Students from
different levels attended including their Assistant School
Superintendent and teachers participated on this event
happened on December 14, 2010. The extension service
teaches them different techniques and counter defense
against for abduction in street and proper holds and escapes
where demonstrated to them. The High School students were

ENGLISH GRAMMAR REVIEW FOR SOPHOMORE STUDENTS OF CARLOS P. GARCIA HIGH SCHOOL
The extension service of the English Cluster faculty members
of the School of Languages, Humanities and Social Sciences
(SLHS) held on February 12, 2010 at C.P. Garcia High School
in Pandacan, Manila aimed to remedy the problems
encountered by the sophomore students on their subject-verb
agreement.
The extension service team was composed of six faculty
members who were divided into two groups: the morning
tutors and the afternoon tutors. Both groups handled two
sections each. The morning session took over sections 1 and 5
while the afternoon session had sections 8 and 9. 58 students
joined the class in the morning while 35 were present in the
afternoon giving a total of 93 students served during the
extension.

The morning team was composed of Ms. Coline Cardeño, Mr.
Juan Carlos Santos and Ms. Ann Millaine Ambayec. The
afternoon team was composed of Mr. Edward Jay Quinto, Ms.
Ryza Carreon and Ms. Elsa Sabularse. The six tutors of the
extension service are English faculty members from SLHS
Intramuros.

The morning and afternoon groups both conducted a pre-test
among students which served as a basis of where the tutors
start. After taking the pre-test, the students immediately
checked the papers and the following results and data were
found, and hereby tabulated.
After the pre-test, the tutors proceeded with the class proper
wherein they discussed the ruled on subject-verb agreement.
14 rules were discussed during the class and the approach and
examples given were anchored on the results of the pre-test;
that is, students discovered their error and used the same
items to correct the error. Example sentences were also given
to make sure that students understood each rule.

The discussion ran for a couple of minutes more than an hour
and the two extension teams made sure that the rules were
understood by the students.

After the discussion and the question and answer, both teams
proceeded to the post test which still is a 20-item test on
subject-verb agreement. This test examined how well the
students understood the lesson.
Analyzing the results of the post test, it may be derived that
students improved on the subject matter since the results
show increase in passing percentage of students.
The passing percentage of students in the morning session is
originally higher since these students come from higher
sections (1 and 5) compared to those of the afternoon session
(8 and 9). However, looking at the percentage improvement,
the afternoon students had a bigger increase.
The morning group had a 7% increase in students’ passing
while the afternoon group registered a 15% increase. From
these, numerical data, it may also be understood that the
purpose of bringing about improvement among students was
achieved.
Although there were difficulties encountered by both the
tutors and the tutees like an ongoing activity which disturbed
the class especially the afternoon session, the purpose has
been delivered and nothing was wasted in the extension
service held at C.P. Garcia High School.

WEB PAGE DEVELOPMENT TRAINING
Personnel from the Metropolitan Manila Development
Authority (MMDA) and National Disaster Coordinating Council
(NDCC) attended the two-day training on web page
development given by the School of IT of Mapua Institute of
Technology last June 28 and July 3, 2010. The training was a
follow up to the Computer Fundamentals Short Term Course
(CFSTC) given by SOCIP to the same participants which was
held in the Intramuros campus.
Faculty members of the School of IT- Engr. Joel C. De Goma,
Mr. Ariel Kely Balan, and Ms. Mideth B. Abisado together with
Ms. Mary Rose Blancaflor of ET Yuchengco School of Business
and Management were lecturers for the training, and were
assisted by members of the “Webmasters”, a student
organization based in Makati. During the training, the very
eager participants were taught the basics of web-page
development using HTML.

Basic Computer Training
A second batch of senior residents from Barangay Bel-air
attended three-day training on the basics of computers given
by the School of IT of Mapua Institute of Technology. The
training was held three Fridays at the Makati Campus with
lessons on familiarization with a computer, surfing the
internet, creating email accounts, sending emails, and
downloading and uploading of files.
As before, the recipients aged 55 to 73(?) were in their high
spirits when the training started. With a step-by-step lecture
from Ms. Mary Jane Samonte and Mr. Ricardo de Leon of the
Physics Department, the seniors were painstakingly guided
into using the computers for personal (communicating with
friends and loved ones), business, and research reasons.

student organizations: Student council, ACM, and Webmasters.
Also present to facilitate the training was Mr. Ephraim Canete,
a new faculty of the School of IT.

fact, training on MS Word, is already at hand. It would seem
that our lolo’s and lola’s are out to give our would be lecturers
and facilitators “a run for their money”.

Social Housing Development
The project output included a geodetic survey and a
redevelopment plan. The planning consultancy service
rendered were alternative redevelopment plans for the fire
affected area and for the entire Gasangan area in the Baseco
Compound, Barangay 649, Zone 68, Port Area, Manila. While
the engineering consultancy services were geodetic surveys to
get the boundaries of the Gasangan area and the extent of the
fire affected area.
The fire occurred in January 15, 2010 which rendered more
than 200 families homeless. The affected families are currently
living in tents where the conditions are difficult as they have
no water, electricity and the summer heat is becoming more
intense with the coming of the summer season.

The planning was done by the faculty of the School of
Architecture, Industrial Design and the Built Environment in
partnership and coordination with the Civil Engineering and
Environmental and Sanitary Engineering Department.
The engineering department undertook the required geodetic
survey of the entire Gasangan area and the fire area. Two
field visits were undertaken to complete the needed geodetic
survey. A bearing description and lot plan was produced by
the engineering department with Engineer Benny Cervantes
supervision the engineering students.
Consultants for the redevelopment plan were Liliana
Marulandia of the Urban Poor Associates (UPA) with Dean
Gloria Teodoro, Michelle Pernia and Albert Zambrano of Mapua
Institute of Technology (MIT). Students of Architecture helped
out with the drafting works for the redevelopment plan.

LA SALETTE OUTREACH BUILDING
The project output includes Architectural / Construction
Designs, Interior Designs and Engineering Designs for the
construction of the La Salette Outreach building in Muzon, San
Jose Del Monte Bulacan.
The faculty was involved by providing architectural,
construction, interior and engineering design consultancy
services. The architectural design consultant was Arch. Albert
Zambrano while the green construction design consultant was
Arch. Aristeo Garcia. Interior design was done by Ms.
Catherine Reodique and the engineering design was done
Engr. Arnel Juan.

Manila Cathedral As-Built Plan (Part 1)
This initial phase of the school’s extension project is part of a
broader scope to prepare for a complete as-built plan for the
historic cathedral.
Limited to work within one quarter, the whole task was
divided into phases beginning with the measurement of the
base plan. With the given set of blueprint plans of 1955, the
cathedral was divided into two (2) parts with assigned teams
to carry out actual measurements on their respective
schedules.
Objectives
These are the following set objectives of the making of
the As-built Plans:
To create the As-built plans in AutoCAD format
o Strategy: Measure every edge.
o Strategy: Divide the group in to three and the
group must have 2 people to document the
whole process.
o Strategy: The groups must have a copy of the
original Floor Plan of the structure provided by
the administration for basis.
To measure half of the Manila Cathedral’s floor (East
part was assigned to us)
o Strategy: The group must use measuring
instruments to measure ever edge in the
structure.
To have the As-built plans arranged in a manner of
group work
o Strategy: The group must conduct actual visits.

The project committees are composed of professors from
Mapua Institute of Technology. These committee heads are
divided into groups. Arch. Garcia, the Head of the Project and
the other committees formulated to have each assignment.
Arch. Ealdama, the adviser of Professional Practice two was
appointed to have a report to the east side of Manila Cathedral
excluding the offices and altar.
Team 1, Team 2, and Team 3 measured the 6 interior rooms
in the Manila Cathedral. The rooms are divided into 6 to fit in
the 3 members to have 2 rooms per member.

Manila Cathedral As-Built Plan (Part 2)
A visit was again conducted on the 11th of March 2010. Prior
to this visit, planning and formulation of tasks to be carried
out were planned. The targets of the team for this day are as
follows:
Measure the exterior part of the east part of the
structure.
Measure the columns and other details inside the
structure.
Verify the measurements gathered in the first visit.
Finalize general perimeter measurements
It is stated at the illustration that the team has to continue measuring the perimeter until the two teams meet. The allowable time consumed is 2-3 hrs, far from the expected number of hours of 3-4 hours. There are 2 tasks; 1 – Exterior (red), 2 – Interior (blue)
It is clearly stated that the endpoints, basing from the starting
point, are represented as a target mark. The first task is
highlighted as the red color, and the second task as the Blue
color. Starting points are White Target Marks and Endpoints
as Yellow Target Marks.

Conclusion
The second visit at Manila Cathedral closes the
requirements for this initial phase. The actual measuring
processes were done and finalized. All the
measurements gathered were arranged and come up
with the overall requirement as a need in the formulation
of the As-Built plans (other part of the cathedral area was
measured separately and was carried out by the other
set of field research students from another class).
The actual measurements on filed log are gathered by
the production team leader and were translated into
AutoCAD by one of the team members. (Kindly refer to
attached CD for AutoCAD copy of the As-built
measurements)

“Feeding the Lambs”
“Let us touch the dying, the poor, the lonely and the
unwanted according to the graces we have received and let us
not be ashamed or slow to do the humble work.” – Mother

The “Feeding of the Lambs” has been a program of the
Medical Ambassadors of the Philippines (MAP). It is a feeding
program for 35 identified malnourished children belonging to
the Muslim Community in Quiapo, Manila. The collaboration of
San Lorenzo School of Health and Sciences with the said
organization was established 2 years ago through Prof. Dawn
Capaque. This year, the students of NCM 100L- Related
Learning Experience for Fundamentals of Nursing together
with their respective faculty were tasked to continue the
linkage and conduct the said program which was held last Feb.
18, 2010.
Aside from the academic point of view, this reach-out project
serves a way for the school and its students give back the
blessings they have receive through an atmosphere of love
and care by helping the less fortunate.

The objectives of the activity are the following:
1) Prepare a one dish meal rich in carbohydrate-protein-
mineral nutrients.
2) Assess target group for significant data on their
present health status and make appropriate referrals.
3) Creatively impart adequate and age-appropriate
knowledge and skills on proper hygiene, proper
nutrition and proper exercise to the target population.
4) Observe, interact and behave appropriately in a
transcultural setting.
5) Display characteristics of a professional nurse through
caring attitude.
Health teaching to promote good health practices
One of the roles of a nurse is to become a health educator.
Most activities geared to achieving health promotion and
disease prevention are realized through good and effective
health teaching. Thus, this activity provided a venue for the
students to hone their skills in conducting health teachings. It
will help them identify strengths as well as weaknesses which
they can work on to further improve such skills. The students
were given 4 days to prepare their teaching strategies and
learning content through the accomplishment of their health
teaching plan.

Tasks were divided and delegated equally as a core group of
leaders were established. The budget for the said activity was
allocated effectively. The students made contributions to come
up with the budget. Monetary donations were also handed
down by Dean Deogracia Valderrama herself. Contact with the
MAP representative was also made possible by Ms. Anna
Binayug, Prof. Dawn Capaque and Prof. Delia Tan since she is
one of the Board Members of MAP.
Distribution of meal to the children with the help from volunteers
During the said activity, students performed their specific
tasks as planned. While some were preparing the meals, most
of the groups were conducting health teaching. Every student
was given a chance to participate in the health teachings as
they took turns. It was the student’s first time to conduct an
actual health teaching. Even so, they were able to exhibit
marginally accepted performance. Prizes such as toothbrushes
were given as positive feedback during the evaluation of the
children’s learning.

CONDUCT OF REVIEW-LECTURE IN PHYSICS TO THE FOURTH YEAR STUDENTS OF PUP LABORATORY HIGH SCHOOL-STA. MESA, MANILA
The Department of Physics through its Committee on
Extension Services headed by Engr. May M. Lozada conducted
a review-lecture in Physics to the fourth year students of the
PUP Laboratory High School in Sta. Mesa Manila last August
09, 2010. The review-lecture covered almost all of the topics
being taught in high school Physics, from vectors to
electromagnetism. The objectives of the activity were to
prepare the students for their National Career Assessment
Examination (NCAE) which is scheduled on August 28, 2010
and also to prepare them when they take different college
admission tests. The activity also intended to enrich their
understanding of their high school physics in which they are
currently enrolled in.
The recipient group was composed of 129 fourth year
students. This group was divided into three groups. The
activity was conducted in a parallel session method. The
lecturers discussed similar lessons. The faculty members who
conducted the lecture were FE M. NOVIDA, RAMIL R. JIMENEZ
and BOBBY D. MANLAPIG.

A pre-test was administered before the lecture and a post-test
which contained the same questions for the pre-test was
likewise given to assess the success of the lecture.
From the results of the pre-test and post-test it was very
evident that the lecture conducted was a success. All the
participants achieved higher scores in the post-test than in the
pre-test.
The group who conducted the activity was pleased with the
result of the activity because of the one hundred percent
attendance of the participants. The principal of the school was
very cooperative and accommodating. She was very grateful
with the kind of extension service MAPUA is extending to their
school. She informed us that the review-lecture being
conducted regularly for the past four years greatly helped the
students to achieve a very satisfactory performance when they
take college admission examinations and the like. She was
also very glad to inform the group that their school ranked
second in the last year’s NCEA results for all public and private
schools in Metro Manila.

NATIONAL CAREER ASSESSMENT REVIEW
Last February 11-12, 2010, the extension service committee of
the department conducted a two-day review program at
Carlos P. Garcia High School (CPGHS), Pandacan, Manila. Four
hundred (400) 2nd year high school students attended the
review in preparation for their National Achievement Test this
coming March 2010.

The review program was started by the lecturers facilitating a
diagnostic examination to the students to know the level of
their knowledge in Mathematics. Then, the review proper in
Algebra commenced. An examination was given again to the
students to assess if their knowledge improved after the
review. The results of the two examinations given to the
students were checked and evaluated by the faculty members
assigned for documentation.
Almost all the members of the Mathematics Department
participated in the said activity.

MATH TUTORIAL AND REMEDIAL PROGRAM FOR BASIC ENGINEERING STUDENTS
The mathematics department, through its extension service
committee, conducted a math remedial and tutorial program
for basic engineering students. This activity was initiated by
then Prof. Cesar Romeo V. Delos Reyes, Subject Chairperson
of the said department. It aimed to help the basic engineering
students cope up with their enrolled mathematics courses and
prepare them for their diagnostic, final and math23x exit
examinations. The activity was first implemented last
academic year and is scheduled every 6th - 8th week of the
term. For the 4th term SY 2008-09, it was scheduled last June
1-6, 8-11, 13 & 18, 2009. For the 1st term SY 2009-10, it was
held last September 1-5, 7-12 & 14, 2009. For the 2nd term SY
2009-10, it was held last December 1-5, 8-12, 2009. For the
3rd term SY 2009-10, it was scheduled last March 8-13, 2010.

BASECO Relief Operation
Last 20 January 2010, the group headed by Engr. Agas
assisted the Metropolitan Manila Cathedral Parish and San
Agustin Parish in the distribution of relief goods at BASECO,
Port Area, Manila which was ravaged by fire and affected the
three hundred fifty two (352) families residing in the area.
Relief goods from the Manila Cathedral Parish were loaded to
the Institute’s service vehicle through the assistance of the
parish’ Social Service staff, Mr. Rizal Infante. Each bag of
relief goods contains assorted grocery items.
At around 2:00 PM, the group arrived in BASECO and was
welcomed by the coordinators and staff of the San Agustin
Parish. Immediately after, they informed the fire victims to
gather in the chapel for the distribution of the packed goods.
The SOCIP staff also went to the burned-out area to see the
conditions of the affected families.

Medical Mission
The Mapua Institute of Technology through the Office for
Social Orientation and Community Involvement Programs
(SOCIP) in cooperation with San Lorenzo Ruiz School of
Nursing (Mapua), Manila Health Department District V and
PSG Hospital conducted a Medical Mission last March 6, 2010
at Barangay 830 Zone 90, Pandacan, Manila through the
chairmanship of Chairwoman Purisima Albasin.
The Medical Mission started at 9:00AM. An orientation of all
the proponents was first given by Engr. Joyrence Agas to
inform them on the process of the activity. After about 10
minutes, all the proponents went to their assigned places.
The nine (9) Extension Service Coordinators who were present
during the activity were requested to form 2 groups. One
group will facilitate the registration of the patients while the
other group will assist the crowd in the Pharmacy. The San
Lorenzo Ruiz School of Nursing students on the other hand
were tasked to get the vital signs of the patients. The
volunteer doctors were given each their own table to assist
and diagnose the patients on their concerns. Also present was
the Barangay Council which was also requested to be crowd
controllers.

A free anti-rabies vaccination was likewise offered by one of
the volunteer doctors to all the pet owners.
Check up and Distribution of medicines and vitamins
After the medical mission, a simple awarding of certificates
was held to acknowledge the efforts of the special people who
contributed to the success of the activity. Hosted by Kagawad
Botardo and assisted by Engr. Agas and Chairwoman Albasin,
volunteer doctors and nurses were given each a Certificate of
Appreciation and a token. This then concluded the activity.

Blood Letting Activity
Last 30 July 2010, the Mapúa Institute of Technology through
the Office for Social Orientation and Community Involvement
Programs (SOCIP) in coordination with Dr. Jose R. Reyes
Memorial Medical Center (JRRMMC) and Manila Health
Department (MHD) held its Blood Letting activity at the
Student’s Pavilion of Mapua Institute of Technology. The
activity aims to educate the students and employees on the
benefits of giving of blood and how it can help people and
save lives.
The activity started at 8:00AM. While the JRRMMC doctors
and Med-techs are still waiting for the donors to arrive,
representatives from the Manila Health Department roamed
around the campus to disseminate information to the students
and employees of the on-going activity. SOCIP staff assisted
them.

to the students who donated blood and as a sign of goodwill

Blood Letting
On December 3, 2010, the Mapua Institute of Technology
through the SOCIP Office held the semi-annual Blood Letting
activity at the Student’s Pavilion. The activity was in
cooperation with Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center
(JRMMC), Manila Health Department and the Manila Lion’s
Club.
The activity was started at 8:00AM. The volunteer health
workers from the Manila Health Department started the
activity by disseminating information through flyers and simple
classroom visits. Students were encouraged also by their
professors to coordinate in the activity. On the other hand,
the Manila Lion’s Club headed by its President Lito Villanueva
gave away Starbucks Gift Certificates worth Php100 and pins
to all qualified blood donors. A total of 86 blood units were
collected.

Dugong Mapúa Mass Blood Donation Drive
The Mapúa Institute of Technology – College Red Cross Youth
Council in cooperation with the Philippine Red Cross – Makati
City Branch of the Rizal Chapter Blood Services recently
concluded the Dugong Mapúa Mass Blood Donation Drive. The
Dugong Mapúa was held in celebration of the World Blood
Donor Day on June 15, 2010 that was simultaneously held
with Blood Donation Drives across the world. One of which is
Barcelona, Spain, the host for this year’s festivities. This year’s
World Blood Donor Day theme, “Young Donor: New Blood for
the World,” focuses on the youth to provide new and fresh
blood for the world. Mapúa Institute of Technology – Makati
was chosen over all colleges and universities in Makati City to
conduct the PRC-Makati Branch’s first ever celebration of the
World Blood Donor Day. Total of 47- units of blood were
collected in the said activity.

OUTREACH
The outreach started as soon as the professor arrived. He
discussed some things before going to the application part of
the program. Each group of students was given facilitators.
These facilitators are us, the member of the participating
organization. They picked the members who will fit this
activity and we ensured that they have knowledge about the
topic. In preparation to this, we had a seminar that was
conducted by Engr. Latina of the EECE Dep’t.
The students are very active and very eager to learn. They
pay attention to everything the professor is teaching to them
and they are motivated by this attitude they showed us. It is
not very hard to teach them since the part of the PCB Layout
that was assigned to us was not difficult enough for them not
to understand it. It is only about the basic usage of multimeter
and its function.

Some of us shared their knowledge about the topic not only
the things we are required to teach them on that day because
the application part was long enough to do this. The students
and facilitators had a good time communicating with each
other. Some talked about to their plans on the future after the
outreach program, some facilitators motivate the students to
continue what they started which is learning about computers
because it is really good today that a person know how to
literately use computers and some laughed with each other by
the stories they shared on that day.
