The formula attracts high quality sponsors and Squash Media will helpsupport anyone who is prepared to build their event. Please come on board! Our sport needs YOU and would welcome you with open arms.
The 2020 Smithfield Dental Northern Region JuniorClosed was still a tremendous success despite anumber of talented juniors not travelling North fromMackay.
Congratulations to all the champions. Thank you to all the participants, sponsors, supporters and volunteers for making the championships such awonderful success. A very BIG thank you to Kerry Mather for taking all thephotos.
Wasn’t it GREAT to see a Squash Championshipbeing played again! Cairns was a buzz with juniorscompeting for the first time since the pandemicbegan.
I encourage a number of parents to seriously consider getting behind thejunior qualifiers in Ingham, Townsville and Mackay. Cairns have clearlydeveloped a formula that works and it can be replicated if the right peoplewith loads of energy get behind it.

Everyone has skills that can be helpful at the junior tournaments, ascommittee members, writing grant applications, attending meetings, providing information for the newsletter, taking photos at events, fundraising, promoting squash, following up sponsors, there is so mucheach of us can do at our local clubs and for the NR.
NR President Jules Wone is appealing to some tostep up and do a little volunteering to help NR Squash. You don’t haveto be a committee member to help but that is still an option if thatinterests you.

Squash Queensland Board
On Monday 31 August 2020 Colette Sultana and Squash Queensland President Jonathan James
hosted a Special General Meeting. This meeting was attended by the Presidents of the four
Queensland Regions and the purpose was to address a special resolution put forward by the
Board to change the organisation's name from Q Squash LTD to Squash Queensland LTD. It was
voted in favour of this name change.
It is expected Squash Australia will make a decision in mid-September about the Australian
Junior Championship which are due to be hosted at Cararra on the Gold Coast in December
2020.
I have continued to have discussions with Colette about the Queensland affiliation and making
it more valuable with Squash Queensland forming partnerships with business who will provide
benefits to Queensland members. The idea is Squash Queensland will boost the value of our
current local partnerships and will certainly not compete with our existing partners. With the
competition for the sponsorship dollar increasing, this is an exciting development at the State
level but it is still being developed. Please contact Colette and provide the details of your local
partners.
Squash Queensland are also in the process of rebranding. If you have any thoughts about a
logo design please contact Colette Sultana. The Board is attempting to incorporate the
Queensland Shark rather than the “Q” which features in the current design.
2020 AUSTRALIAN JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS
If you are considering painting you squash court walls or your house, please contact Colette as
Dulux are providing players and clubs with 30% discount on premium lines of paint (applicable
to house paint and court paint requests) when purchases are made through the Squash
Queensland cash account. They have some other benefits in the pipeline for squash equipment,
cleaning products and electricity. More information will be published soon.
The 2020 Trans-Tasman Test Match will be held at Cararra on the Gold Coast in December. The
team has not yet been selected.

The dates for the Ingham Junior tournament are currently being reviewed. This is due to Covid-
19 and the expected movement around the state during the school holidays. I will get word out
ASAP by email and Facebook as to what is ultimately decided for this tournament. The current
consideration is to delay the tournament for a few weeks or to cancel this tournament if a
suitable date is not identified.
Thanks to Marc Forster, Steve Finitsis, Rhys Mountford-Jones and Dean Morzone for their
contribution to making the weekend a success. Also thanks to Dr Meglin Rathnasamy from
Smithfield Dental who for the 2nd year has been the platinum and name sponsor for this event.
We are also very thankful to all our sponsors.

The 2020 Smithfield Dental Junior NR Closed Championship was a great success. The main
comment I want to make about this event was how fantastic the atmosphere was on the
Saturday morning with the new young U7, U9 and U11 juniors participating in their events. It
was such a buzz.

Non-Compulsory tournaments (Ingham (TBC) and Townsville) will be divisions.
For 2021 Junior Season:
Compulsory tournaments (Mackay and Cairns) will be age and gender format.
Please note Mackay and Cairns are the compulsory tournaments. To qualify for selection for
the Redbacks team, juniors must play three (3) of the four (4) NR Junior tournaments. A junior
must play both compulsory tournaments in Cairns and Mackay and at least 1 tournament in
Ingham (TBC) or Townsville. Juniors who meet this criteria will be given priority consideration
when the Redbacks are selected regardless of strength of an individual who has not fully
qualified or strength of the overall team. Please do not assume you will be selected to the
Northern Redbacks if you have not qualified by attending the required tournaments or have
not provided medical evidence to remain eligible.

Getting organised for the 2021 QJC is a very big job. Please think about how you can help and

AFFILIATION WITH Q SQUASH
NORTHERN REGION MEETING
Standing items on the agenda are coaching clinics, regional participation, grants, 2021 QJC.
Additional item is Bi-Law Number 28.
Affiliation is compulsory for all juniors to compete in the NR Junior tournaments and in the
State and National Championships. Juniors must have full affiliation to play for the Northern
Redbacks. Affiliation status will be checked prior to all 2020 season NR Junior tournaments and
the Queensland Junior Championships.
Affiliation fees: $73 for a full 1 year; or $44 for seasonal (6 months).
Region tournament hosts to set draws. Timely appeals will be essential. The appeal process in
the policy provides for an internal review (like the old policy to give the rankers a chance to
affirm or change their mind), and if the appellant remains aggrieved by that review decision,
the appeal must be decided by an independent decision maker.
The NR meeting scheduled to be held at the 2020 Smithfield Dental Cairns NR Junior Closed
Championships was cancelled due to lack of representation from outside of Cairns.
Please note players living in Mackay, Townsville, Ingham and Cairns and all areas in between
along the coast are not considered remote and do not qualify for the Remote Member
Registration.
The next NR meeting will most likely be at the Cairns Junior Championships in Feb 2021. This
will also be the AGM.
Please send your agenda items to Di Whitchurch E: qsnrsecretary@gmail.com
Due to the Covid-19 restrictions Queensland Squash has extended the 2020 affiliation periods.
Please remember affiliation comes with all sorts of benefits – especially personal insurance
with participating in the game or related activity, such as fundraising.
FUNDING/GRANTS
NR have no current grant applications under consideration and no current grants underway.

I have been wondering if we have any young players or anyone in the NR considering hitting
the court in the capacity as a coach. If anyone is interested to do their Level 1 In coaching
please let me know so we can support your development.
SPORTY HQ
Several NR members are nominated to participate in the 2020 QJC, the junior coaching clinic
Help is required to identify suitable grants and applications to be written. There are many
things that can be purchased with grant funding and this money can make a big difference to
the NR. I'd like grant applications to run coaching clinics, purchase equipment and uniforms etc.
However, if you have any ideas or you can help with identifying grants and writing applications
please contact Karlye Rhodes.
Congratulations to Cairns Squash who have been successful to win a grant from the
Queensland Gambling Community Fund for $35 000 to purchase grandstands for the centre.
The centre is also waiting to hear if we have been successful for a grant application to the
Queensland Government Sport and Recreation for approximately $18 000 for IT equipment.
This will finance monitors for each court, 8 Ipads for scoring and permanent live streaming on 1
court.
Please consider getting a group together to fundraise for your club.
Cairns Squash will again apply for a grant with the Cairns Regional Council for $13 000 for the
2021 QJC.
COACHING
Squash Queensland have announced they are currently trialling Club Locker which is an internet
based program that provides similar functions to SportyHQ. This trial is to understand which
system, Club Locker or SportyHQ is the more suited to everyone's needs.
Cash for Cans is a great fundraising idea for clubs. The Bunnings Sausage Sizzle days are back
on with very strict Covid-19 restrictions but I'm sure they will be a very fruitful fundraising
activity once again.
Squash Australia (SA) has advised SA will cover subscription cost for affiliated clubs. Please do
not pay for any SportyHQ subscriptions prior to discussing your clubs status and encourage all
your club members to pay their affiliations to take advantage of this.

4. Seasonal affiliation fees are still being discussed and will depend on the fixturesseason in your region. More to come on that in the next few weeks.
Due to COVID-19 forced closures this year players have missed out on severalweeks of their affiliation playing benefits and so the Board has decided to roll overthis year's affiliations into next year. Whether you have already paid affiliation thisyear or have still to pay for it, the following changes apply:
5. We have introduced a remote player affiliation option, this is a discountedaffiliation option for players who play at a location that is at least 300kms from theEastern Sea Board. We hope that this encourages players from remote areas in QLDto also affiliate and be covered by player insurance.6. A monthly affiliation option is also available (at $10 per month excl. GST)
2. The 2020 (Jan - June) 6 month affiliation plan now expires on 10th Sep 2020,instead of the original 30th June 2020 expiry.
1. The 2020 12 month player affiliation now expires on March 10th 2021, instead ofthe original 31st Dec 2020 expiry date.
3. The second 6 months of the 2020 year (Jul - Dec) will be due on 10th Sep 2020and will expire on 10th March 2021.
