The Festival of Quilts 2021 2
Quick & Easy Workshops & Demonstrations
Basic Sewing Kit
All students are asked to bring their own basic sewing kit to
eliminate the need to share (embroidery scissors, pins, hand
needles, dressmaking shears (if appropriate), marking pen, tape
measure, black, white and grey general purpose threads).
All other materials to make the project are provided by the
tutor
Sewing machine are provided in the HV (Husqvarna Viking) and Pfaff
rooms
All Quick and Easy classes are 1 hour
Please note, a booking fee applies: £2.50 for e-tickets £2.80 for
postal tickets

Beads This is a lovely workshop for all levels - especially those
new to free motion and applique. Using free motion, you’ll create a
very cute elephant sitting in an appliqued teapot! You’ll learn
which stabilizers to use and how to control your stitches too plus
you’ll complete one project in class and take a second one to

Baa Baa Sheep Free Motion Applique Sukhbeer Dryden, Sew n Beads
Create this lovable nursery rhyme picture using a free motion
embroidery foot and Bondaweb to fuse fabric to fabric. You will
also get another picture to take home with you to practice. The
finished panel can be used as part of a quilt, bag panel, or
cushion front. Suitable for all abilities and the kit comes with

Basket Weaving Miniatures Fi Oberon This tiny basket is a perfect
accessory for your mini needle felted creatures and other whimsy.
You will make your little basket from paper covered wire which
looks remarkably realistic when woven into shape. Using the same
traditional basketry techniques that are used for full scale works,
you will be guided to make a mini basket that you can repeat in
many different sizes at home. Ideas for embellishing the baskets
will be discussed and many examples will be on hand to inspire you.

Batik Country Landscapes Roxanne Pallett, Hannah’s Room Using
beautiful batik fabrics you’ll use Steam a Seam to apply your
pieces to a background canvas fabric before free motioning into
place, adding some flowers and maybe a fence and a bird or two to
make a delightful mini landscape masterpiece. Don’t worry,
precision is definitely not required! Thursday
Beaded and Embroidered Felt Brooch Penny Bicknell Join this Early
Morning class with Penny Bicknell. Star and flower shapes of
pre-cut felt will be stitched together with stranded embroidery
thread, using a variety of stitches. A centre motif will be
attached with the addition of beads and knots. A brooch back will
be stitched to the reverse and covered with a further piece of
felt. You will learn a selection of stitches to decorate your
brooch. You will complete the piece or take home everything
necessary to finish at your leisure. Suitable for all abilities. As

Beautiful Clamshells: Piecing by Hand Molly Brown This workshop
will provide you with the materials to make a coaster using the
very pretty Clamshell shape. During the session you will learn how
to prepare Clamshells to pieces by hand, using Molly’s method of
piecing. You will be shown 3 different patterns how to piece this
shape together. As a hand sewn project, you will need to complete
it at home. However, Molly will provide you with detailed handouts
covering the techniques demonstrated. Suitable for beginners new to
the subject including older children when accompanied by an adult.

Block Printed Purse Clare Horner, Colour Craft In this class we
will create a beautiful block printed piece of fabric using amazing
soft fabric paints, you will have the option to follow the provided
pattern and create a small purse or create something at home. You
will learn easy block printing and how to use super soft fabric
paints to there greatest potential. This beginner pattern will need
to be sewn at home. Suitable for beginners new to the subject or
those wishing to brush up skills. Also suitable for children when
accompanied by an adult. Everyday
Blue Tit Applique Jo Avery Spend a relaxing session with Jo hand
stitching this adorable blue tit. Learn turned-edge applique
techniques plus a little embroidery. Enjoy some slow stitching as
you watch your bird come to life. Once finished at home this can be
used as the centre piece to a quilt block or framed as a picture.
Suitable for all, though some hand stitching experience would be

Braided Spiral Mats Jenni Stuart Anderson This technique shows the
surface pattern of fabrics which are cut into strips, plaited, then
stitched and laced into a spiral which, in an hour, will be table
mat size, but could be extended later. A vintage skill practiced in
the UK, Canada and America. Suitable for all abilities, including
older children. Saturday
Canadian Smocking Sampler Molly Brown In this workshop Molly will
show you how to work North American Smocking. You will make a
sample of this lovely textured technique. Having mastered the
technique, when you get home you can let your creative flair go and
use this to
make vintage style 50’s cushion covers in fabulous modern fabrics,
giving a new twist on an old technique. Molly will provide a
detailed handout so you can continue with your own projects at
home. Suitable for beginners new to the subject including older
children when accompanied by an adult. On Saturday, as part of the

Puffs which the students will make from the materials provided.
This project will be hand stitching only and is simple to make

provided. Students will be able to finish the project later with
all the materials provided. Suitable for all abilities, including

Contemporary Wool Pennies Fi Oberon This great workshop brings the
traditions of wool pennies up to date. Combining felt in a range of
summer colours with white thread your work will have a modern
contemporary feel. You will build up layers of coloured cloth using
decorative stitches. Supplied with a mini stitchery and with Fi
Oberon demonstrating a good range of stitches for you to use you
can expect to make a good start and have all the knowledge to
complete a wool penny project at home. Plenty of finished samples

Cupcake Pin Cushion & Thread Catcher Becky Preen You will make
a robust ribbon wrapped cupcake case to house your pincushion and
then construct a dual-purpose topper which opens up into a handy

Cute Country Mouse Helen Smith Create this adorable Country Mouse,
embellished with decorative machine embroidery stitching during
this one- hour workshop. The Mouse is weighted using sand and can
be used purely as a decorative piece, or as a door stop or maybe to

Design your own Fabrics Katy Holmes Learn how to create your own
repeating fabric patterns with this quick and simple technique on
paper using collage. You will learn how to make a basic, half-drop
and half-brick pattern and complete the class with 2/3 bright and
colourful fabric designs. After the workshop you will
receive a swatch of fabric (22cm x 22cm) professionally printed
with one of your designs through the post. Katy will also provide
guidance on how to design fabric digitally and how to upload and

designed grids to obtain a perfect fit and style for your quilt.

Easy Fusible Orange Peel Gillian Travis Learn a fusible method of
making Orange Peel quilts using one of Gillian’s new templates. Did
you see her jacket last year? It makes it so easy. Make a small
“Orange Peel” sample (various different colours available in the
kits) and learn how you can use this technique to make bigger
quilts, bags, cushion covers or decorate clothing. Suitable for all
abilities including older children when accompanied by an adult.

Easy Procion Tie Dye in a Bag Clare Horner, Colour Craft Want to
dye your own fabric but too afraid to go it alone? In this class
you will learn how to tie easy tie-dye patterns onto cotton and
then how to dye them. You will have a choice of patterns to follow
and wonderful colours to use. The techniques learned in this class
will give you the skills and make you confident to dye at home.
Suitable for beginners, new to tie dyeing or wishing to brush up
their skills including children when accompanied by an adult.

Eco-Dyed Printed Notebook Angela Daymond In this workshop you will
learn about how addictive and absorbing using a variety of leaves
and petals is to colour white paper. You will begin by stitching
pages of cotton rag paper, made from recycled textiles together to
form your own A6 sized notebook. Under guidance from Angela you
will layer up your pages with leaves and petals before bundling
them all together with thread. You will wrap this round some wooden
dowel in the workshop. Full instructions will be given for you to
stream or boil your notebook at home. NO dyeing takes place during
the workshop. You will be taught how to remove the leaves and to
dry your notebook. You will end up with pages full of unique colour
and texture. Angela will teach you how to further embellish your
pages with stitch and printing. This workshop is suitable for all
levels and all resources are provided. As part of the Early morning
pre-show workshops on the Sunday, you will be in the show ready to
shop as soon as the show opens, beating the crowds and queues!

Embroidered Leaf Sarah Adcock This is a relaxing session where a
variety of filling stitches will be demonstrated. These stitches
will be used to fill the leaf sample. Once completed the leaf
sample can be displayed in the embroidery hoop supplied and the
stitches could be used in future quilting projects. Fabric, needle,
embroidery hoop and a choice of threads will be provided. If
possible please do bring a small sewing kit. Suitable for
intermediate level, those with some embroidery experience.

technique of stitching, traditionally used to repair worn clothing.

technique originating in India. It uses just one stitch, the
running stitch to create patterns and representational images. In

for added depth. We will focus on stitching one petal in the

learn all about the fascinating process of natural dyeing.
Angela will teach you about what a mordant is, when and how to
mordant. You will be given a fat quarter of white fabric which
Angela has pre-mordanted. You will put this into a jar with some
natural dye plants such as onion skins, berries and madder root.
Angela will give full instructions on how you will heat up your jar
once home and wash and care for your fabric. Everyone will get
stunning and totally unique results. The hardest thing will be in
deciding what you are going to do with your fabric. Angela will
teach you how to size up your natural dyeing for larger pieces of

Piecing is highly portable and a brilliant way to use up scraps.
Fabric is attached to paper templates to create crisp corners and
precise shapes, then hand stitched together before removing the
paper. Perfect for a multitude of shapes and a wide range of
projects, scrappy piecing can produce truly beautiful results. In
this class you will learn to cut the papers and fabric, tack and
stitch some shapes together. We will discuss how the method can be
used to create different effects, and you will leave with a section
of paper pieced patchwork. Suitable for beginners, new to the

Shibori: Four Techniques in an Hour Angela Daymond Shibori has its
origins in Japan and involves folding, pleating and scrunching
fabric using thread and clips to create beautiful patterns after
dyeing. In this Early Morning workshop you will learn three
different stitch resist techniques and a clamp technique using a
fat quarter of cotton fabric. The workshop focuses on these four
very different techniques and you will take your fabrics away with
you to dye at home. You will get a demonstration of how to put your
fabrics into a jar or plastic bag before dyeing them a traditional
navy blue. NO dyeing of fabrics will take place during the
workshop. Angela will provide the navy procion dye, soda ash, salt
and give you written instructions so that you can easily complete

Shisha Mirror Embroidery: An Introduction Molly Brown Mirrors
(Shisha) embroidered onto fabrics are a very popular Indian
embellishment. Join Molly to learn the basics of Shisha Embroidery.
Make your embroidery into a handy needle case. If you choose to go
on to make the needle case, you will need to complete the work
after the workshop. Molly will provide a detailed handout relating
to this workshop, so you can remember what you did and do more at

Siddi Stitched Coaster Jo Avery Join Jo in this Early Morning
session to learn this fascinating technique for ‘no sew’ applique
which is adapted from the quilt- making practices of the Siddi
community in Southern India. It’s a type of fabric collage fixed by
many rows of hand quilting, or ‘kantha’ stitching. We’ll be trying
it out while producing a hand stitched coaster which you will
finish at home. It’s is a great way to use up scraps and you’ll
find an hour spent stitching with Jo both fun and relaxing.

session is for all who love hand sewing! This is a great patchwork
for
using scraps and oh so easy to transport. Make attractive centres
to Dresden Plates, box lids, cushion panels and even great for
inclusion in handmade cards or coasters. Enjoy some quiet, peaceful
stitchery in a tactile and creative form. Sufficient material will

Take Two Stitches Hazel and Terry, InStitches Spend an hour with
InStitches exploring the creative potential of two basic hand
stitches, the dash and the dot. Change the effect by working with
threads in different weights and colours and arranging them in
unexpected ways. Each kit will include everything you need for the
class: fabric, wadding, a needle and a selection of InStitches’
hand dyed threads plus an illustrated work sheet so that you can
