Questions...

Who is this man?

What is his name?

Where is he from?

How old is he?

Does he have any family?

Normal questionsThe ones everyone would ask...

Unusual questionsBut still using the picture...

Who or what is he looking at?

What is he looking through?

How often does he trim his moustache?

What colour are his eyes?

Does everyone in his family have a nose like that?

Bizarre questions!Completely off-the-wall stuff!

What does he want for supper tonight?

Why is his uncle in prison?

What is tattooed on his left buttock?

What awful lie has he just told his wife?

What animal appears in his recurring nightmare?

He is, in fact, Maurits Cornelis Escher, a Dutch artist who lived

from 1898 to 1972. And he is most famous for creating images that pose really bizarre questions...

But sometimes asking bizarre questions can be useful.

They can help us look beneath the surface...

...to find out what is reallyreally going on!

Because more often than not...

...things aren’t what they seem to be!

First impressions may not be accurate...

There’s more to life than what meets the eye!

And it’s that hidden stuff that’s usually the most interesting!

LyingLying isis goodgood!

Escher creates a world of images that you know aren’t true, but you end up believing in.

What’s going on here?

What’s going to happen next?

Are those real lizards?

What magic potion has been spilt on the paper to cause this

to happen?

Who is watching this?

We, as authors, create worlds of words.

Those words don’t have to be true.

In fact the bigger the lie the better the story!

We don’t want our readers

to believebelieve what we write...

We want them to believe inbelieve in

the world of words we have created.

So no matter how

off-the-wall off-the-wall

you may think you are now...

By the time you’ve finished, you’re going to be much better at asking really great...
