PRESIDENT’S REPORT
May is here, but why was autumn so tardy? It’s so much
nicer stitching in cooler weather.
We have lots of activity at the Guild this month: the Mother’s
Day Craft Fair, Start Stitching classes and our June
exhibition planning—certainly not a dull moment for any of
us!
After the busy Half-yearly Meeting, the Guild Management
Committee has now completed the purpose statement of the
Building Subcommittee. The Membership Form, with its
revised fee structure and membership categories, will be
printed in the June newsletter. Those of us at the meeting
enjoyed seeing Eva Wilcox’s work, kindly brought by her
daughter, Patsy, who delighted us with stories of her
mother’s life.
Following the roof repairs to our building, the Brisbane City
Council Heritage Team forwarded a grant of $5,704.01 to the
Guild. We are grateful to this team for their ongoing support
and interest in maintaining our Guild premises at their best.
I had been thinking our ‘new look’ newsletter was going to
be a ‘first’ for the Guild. Then I saw the 15 volumes of Guild
newsletters that Colin Jorgensen has recently bound — from
the first issue in January 1968 to the December 2014 edition.
I was amazed! Seeing these reminded me that when I joined
the Queensland Embroidery Guild in 1994 the newsletter was
an A4 format; so things do move in circles. The Guild is
very thankful to Colin for his skill and generosity in
preparing these beautifully bound volumes. In the future, the
newsletter team may find many items of interest from these
past newsletters to republish.
April classes, with Christine P Bishop, were a great success:
challenging at times, yet enjoyable. Hilary Crawfoot’s Class
List (included in this newsletter) has an interesting variety of
classes, led by both in-house and visiting tutors. What will
you decide to do? continued

PRESIDENT’S REPORT continued
The Stitches and Craft Show was very successful. Many inquiries were made and there was keen interest shown in the
beautiful pieces displayed. Thank you to Annette Parke and her volunteers.
Our new Patron, Ms Janet De Boer, OAM, will open our exhibition ‘A World United in Stitches’ at the Guild building
on Saturday, 4 June at 2 pm. It will be followed by afternoon tea. Opening times for the week will be 10 am to 3 pm
daily, until 11 June. To complement the exhibition, Margaret Young and her team are preparing the Collection
display ‘Children’s Clothing – Home and Away’ upstairs. There will be a selection of christening gowns, babywear
and children’s clothes to admire.
Due to heavy work commitments, Sally Randle has had to step down from her role in convening our exhibition.
Paperwork and entry fees must be with the Guild by 7 May, but exhibitors have until 21 May to deliver their display
work. This allows sufficient time for the return of embroidery to those members who also enter the Brookfield Show.
Further exhibition details are in this newsletter.
Happy stitching!
Deborah Love
The Stitches and Craft Show—a vibrant Guild presence
Many members assisted in making our display and presence at The Stitches and Craft Show in March 2016 a resounding success.
Many helped behind the scenes; others volunteered their time to assist at the fair itself or willingly provided support at the last
minute.
Our display received many compliments and thanks are extended to everyone who generously donated embroidery for display. As
usual, the public could not take their eyes off our members’ beautiful embroidery.
We received many enquiries and these are being followed up by committee members and office bearers. Gradually everything
returned to normal and we will slowly get ready for the fair in October 2016.
We would be delighted to hear any feedback or suggestions for improving our processes. It is not always possible to see all good
ideas through to fruition as quite often we do not have the volunteers to undertake new initiatives, but we will certainly try.

‘A World United in Stitches’—Biennial Exhibition The Guild’s Biennial Exhibition, ‘A World United in Stitches’, will run from 4–11 June in the downstairs rooms of
our building. It will be open from 10 am to 3 pm each day. Our patron, Ms Janet De Boer, OAM, will officially open
the exhibition at 2 pm on Saturday, 4 June, with afternoon tea to follow.
Entrance fee
A $10 entrance fee, payable at the door, covers an exhibition catalogue and light refreshments. To that end, could
members please contribute to refreshments by supplying biscuits, slices and cakes? It would be greatly appreciated.
(Phone Jill Gillespie on 0417 730 080 for further information.) Lunch will also be available for an additional cost.
What you will see
The exhibition has three sections:
Section 1: a general display, which is not judged; however, there will be a Viewer’s Choice prize awarded
each day, donated by Inspirations Magazines
Section 2: a display of class pieces, both finished and unfinished
Section 3: Book Cover Challenge, which is a judged competition.
A Collection display titled ‘Children’s Clothing – Home and Away’ will be on show in the upstairs rooms. It will
feature a selection of christening gowns, babywear, children’s clothes and the first steps of a child’s embroidery
lesson.
As well, the Guild’s Boutique Gift Table will feature a variety of beautiful hand-embroidered articles for sale.
Key dates for exhibitors
Entry forms must be received by Saturday, 7 May. (An entry form must be submitted for each exhibit. Entry forms
are available in the Guild rooms; the form was also printed in the March newsletter.) Entry forms can be sent in the
post (with payment attached) to the Guild or placed in the Entry Form Box on the table in the library. Exhibitors may,
if they wish, display a maximum of 3 items in each of the three sections, with an entry fee of $5.00 per item. All entry
items must be received at the Guild by Saturday, 21 May. (Note: This date has been changed to allow sufficient time
for the return of embroidery for those exhibiting in the Brookfield Show.)
Prizes and awards
As well as the prizes mentioned above, there will be an Acquisition Prize of $350 and a Young Embroiderers’
Encouragement Award (open to embroiderers under the age of 18).
Art Union tickets
Throughout the exhibition, Art Union tickets will be on sale for $2 each.
Other matters
Rosters will be available in the Guild rooms from Tuesday, 3 May. Please help in any
way you can; your efforts will help to ensure the success of our exhibition.
Normal Guild operations will cease from Monday, 30 May to allow the exhibition and
the Collection display to be set up. The Guild will open again for general stitching on
Tuesday, 14 June.

VALE Carolyn MacLauchlan
It was with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Carolyn MacLauchlan on 25 February. She had been
battling major health issues for some time and her final hospitalisation was mercifully brief. The Thursday girls made
a quilt for her after she lost everything in a house fire in 2009 and feel honoured that her family chose it to drape her
coffin with. Carolyn was, for some years, the Thursday Convenor and was a much loved member of the Guild and
many other organisations, mostly textile-related.
THE LITTLE HISTORIANS FESTIVAL Newstead Park, Cnr Breakfast Creek Rd and Newstead Ave, Newstead
9 am to 1pm on Sunday, 15 May 2016
Join Guild members demonstrating simple stitching to children at Newstead House.
Help thread needles, knot threads and show children how to sew simple stitches on
small designs. We need your goodwill to make this event another success. Last year
was our first invitation to this wonderful event and we had no idea what to expect. It
was a great success with approximately 50 children enjoying the activities organised
by the Guild.
Contact: vandawaller@me.com or mob. 0419 789 987
Reminder: Guild Rooms will be closed from Monday 30 May to allow for the setup of the exhibition and
will reopen on Tuesday 14 June.

New stitching challenges with Christine P Bishop
A group of excited Guild members attended Christine’s classes
over a four-day period in mid-April. With clear instructions and
generous guidance, good progress was made on two beautiful
projects – Peony Rose Sweet Bag and Dresden Embroidery.
Learning new stitches and seeing the effect of them in both
designs was interesting. The linens used were beautiful and easy
to work with but concentration was essential when counting.
Everyone commented on the forethought our early members had
in purchasing our wonderful building, which has provided us with
such a pleasant learning environment. Christine displayed
additional pieces she had recently completed and that led everyone
to wonder what pieces we might attempt next year.

Colourful Stitches on Evenweave with Alison Snepp
28 and 29 May 2016
In this workshop Alison’s students will explore new and
already-known stitches working on evenweave linen in bright
colours of stranded cotton and other threads from each
student’s collection. The embroidery is relaxing and
thoroughly enjoyable and each student’s work will be different
reflecting their own expression of favourite stitches and
exciting textures. This workshop is all about reconnecting with
stitch and gaining confidence with modifying stitches to
achieve particular effects. The completed embroidery may be
turned into an insertion into a bag, book cover or cushion, or
may be worked as the colourful ends on a table runner or mat.
Kogin Embroidery with Carolyn Foley
Kogin embroidery originated in the north of Japan's main island in the prefecture of Aomori and is a form of needle weaving traditionally worked with mercerised cotton on hemp fabric.
Introduction to Kogin - Saturday 18 June 2016
In this class you will be introduced to the two main methods of Kogin stitching. The patterns are from two different regions. One is stitched over an odd number of threads and the other over an even number of threads. The class sample has been made into a place mat. The kit is purchased from the tutor at the class: $35.00
Advanced Kogin - Saturday 16 July 2016 This class requires knowledge of the traditional methods of stitching either Kogin or Sashiko. It builds on the skills in the introductory class and is a complicated pattern inspired from traditional clothing. It uses the odd count of needle-weaving that originated in the central region and includes the use of different coloured threads. The class sample has been made into a bag but it could also be used as a wall hanging. The kit is purchased from the tutor at the class: $33.00
