§ TheNationalNotifiableDiseasesSurveillanceSystem(NNDSS)isanationwidecollaborationthatenablesalllevelsofpublichealth—local,state,territorial,federal,andinternational—tosharenotifiabledisease-relatedhealthinformation.

§ Publichealthusesthisinformationtomonitor,control,andpreventtheoccurrenceandspreadofstate-reportableandnationallynotifiableinfectiousandnoninfectiousdiseasesandconditionsandoutbreaks.

§ NNDSSisamultifacetedprogramthatincludesthesurveillancesystemforcollection,analysis,andsharingofhealthdata.Italsoincludespolicies,laws,electronicmessagingstandards,people,partners,informationsystems,processes,andresourcesatthelocal,state,territorial,andnationallevels.

§ Notifiablediseasesurveillancebeginsattheleveloflocal,state,andterritorialpublichealthdepartments(alsoknownasjurisdictions).Jurisdictionallawsandregulationsmandatereportingofcasesofspecifiedinfectiousandnoninfectiousconditionstohealthdepartments.
