Platform Touch Voltage ProtectionMembrane System (PTVPMS)
Introduction
Tokai Platform Touch Voltage Protection Membrane System (PTVPMS) is a customized solution installed at MRT Platforms to safeguard passengers on the platform from possible electrical shocks caused by touch and step voltages.
These electrical shocks can occur during:• Boarding / Alighting• Physical contact with the train• Physical contact with Platform Screen Doors (PSDs).
Potential Hazards
Potential hazards such as electrical shocks to passengers due to the different voltage potentials which can occur around the platform edge especially between the platform screen door and train or train depot workshop area. For our MRT system, the platform screen doors that are installed at the underground and elevated stations are in close
proximity to the train at the station platform edge, and this is the area that poses the highest risk to touch potential and its associated hazards.
Therefore to mitigate this risk, a protection zone in the form of an insulation system is required, and in doing so we are able to protect passengers on the platform from accidental contact with high voltage that with sufficient energy may result in severe injury or death.
System BenefitsOur insulation membrane solution is in accordance to the International Standards of VDE 0115 and EN 50122-1Bonded type Membrane with hot-liquid applied to the required thickness (2.5mm – 3mm) both horizontal and vertical applicationNo adhesive used, hence porous or air-void between membrane and concrete is avoided.Earth resistance compliance test in accordance to the BS 7430 and MS IEC 62305:2006Proven reliability and durability for MRT Projects
Platform Touch Voltage ProtectionMembrane System exclusively from TOKAI!A Protection Solution In Accordance to the International Standards of VDE 0115 and EN 50122-1.

Platform Touch Voltage Protection Membrane System:Process
HOT APPLIED RUBBERIZED ASPHALT SYSTEM
The system uses hot asphalt as a medium to adhere the asphalt touch voltage membrane onto the substrate thereby generating a fully bonded system. The hot asphalt application method promotes a fully bonded system that eliminates water admitting gaps. Regardless of the quality of the membrane used, cold application method will always leave some gaps that may possibly admit water as illustrated in the adjacent diagram.
TOKAI MEMBRANE
The membrane incorporates a non-woven mat and synthetic fiber mesh as reinforcement impregnated with a high resistivity membrane on both sides with styrene butadiene modified asphalt. This high resistivity membrane provides an elastic body with excellent tensile strength on account of its high modulus configuration. The latter enhances the ability of the high resistivity membrane to follow the movement of the substrate thereby reducing the possibility of rupture to the membrane caused by substrate movement.

SURFACE PREPARATION
Structural slab shall be cast with a monolithic power-float or steel-trowel smooth to achieve rigid and even concrete finishes. New concrete structure should be cured for more than 14 days old prior to commencement of touch voltage membrane works. All pipe penetrations shall be installed with flanges and firmly cast in.
PRIMING
The substrate is first primed with an asphaltic adhesive primer at the minimum of 0.3 kg per square metre. Allow primer to cure so that all inherent solvents in the primer have evaporated.
Installation
During the installation process, each roll of the high resistivity membrane should align with the adjacent roll. The membrane should then be installed simultaneously with hot asphalt by unrolling the electrical insulation membrane. Subsequent shifting of the roll should be avoided after pouring of hot asphalt compound has begun. All laps should be 100 mm which can be achieved by lines already drawn on every roll of the high resistivity membrane during the manufacturing process. Joints should be lapped and should be staggered.
