Welcome to Clinton
First home to the Hammonasset people and later established as a plantation for English settlers in 1663, Clinton, Connecticut boasts a rich and remarkable history. Yale University’s first classes were conducted here. None other than Benjamin Franklin, Colonial Postmaster General, personally determined the site of a Boston Post Road milestone on current Main Street. Hundreds of trading ships were built and launched from Clinton’s shipyards and the Ponds Extract Company (now part of Unilever) set up shop in town to harvest, process, and bottle witch hazel. For generations, vacationers, artists, and year-round residents have found pleasure and a deep community spirit at our shore. Since 1938, the Clinton Historical Society has researched, recorded, and shared stories of Clinton’s past. Now, we invite you to discover life in Clinton in the days and centuries gone by. (continue reading - http://www.clintonct.com/)Clinton and Westbrook are two of the many prosperous towns along the Connecticut shoreline whose past, present and future are linked inextricably to the waters of Long Island Sound, a bountiful yet sometimes cruel master.Sandwiched between Old Saybrook and Madison on the Shore Line East commuter rail line, Clinton and Westbrook each comprise roughly 16 square miles of land that was once the home of a Native American people known as the Hammonasset, a word that means "where we dig holes in the ground," aka farming. (http://www.courant.com/new-haven-living/town-spotlight/hc-nhl-clinton-westbrook-july-20140702-story.html)Clinton traces its history from 1663 when the land between Guilford and Saybrook, as they were then bounded, was known as Hammonasset. In this year a committee was appointed by the General Court at Hartford to lay out this area as a plantation. In 1667 the settlement was designated a town and named Kenilworth. By the middle of the eighteenth century, through changes in use, this name became Killingworth. In 1838 the southern portion was incorporated by the General Assembly as the Town of Clinton, the northern portion retaining the name of Killingworth. The town was named after New York Governor DeWitt Clinton. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clinton,_Connecticut)
