Creating your bio

• Choose a clear, bright, friendly but professional image for your profile• Include a cover image that is relevant to your work• Include your title/role in your bio and tag relevant universities or associations that you work for• Add something fun and personal

What to post?

• Clear, bright and well shot photos• Short videos, no longer than 60 seconds• Regular content• Out in the field, in the lab, attending conferences• Teaser information or interesting facts• Project milestones

Language/Tone

• Use friendly and less formal language in your posts• Encourage a dialogue with your followers• Use language that someone who is not an expert would understand, this will broaden your audience and allow people outside your field to engage.

Engage and connect

• Being active is a fast and easy way to grow your channels• Follow people, comment on posts, reply to comments• Share other people’s research/news• Social media is not a one way street

Social media can connect you with like-minded people all over the world instantly! By joining groups, using hashtags and connecting you are able to build an online community.

Social media etiquette

• If you wouldn’t say it in person, don’t say it on social• What you post last forever (even if you delete it)• Don’t engage with trolls, you can block or hide users/comments• Be respectful, be polite and have fun!

It’s common sense
