Introduction
Nowadays, the traffic population increases rapidly so that the road is over capacity. This
condition become a problem for the transportation. To identify, analyze, design and solve the
traffic problem, traffic engineer could use simulation model. The traffic simulation model is a
technique that can be used to figure the real traffic conditions because the calibrated and
validated simulation could represent the real traffic condition. There are 3 methods of
simulation. They are micro-simulation, meso-simulation and macro-simulation. In this
project, a micro-simulation is applied to develop a model in the roundabout at the
Idrottsparken.
Background
The roundabout at Idrottsparken consists of four legs. It connects 3 roads. They are
Kungsgatan, Södra Promenaden and Albrektsvägen. Congested traffic occurs during peak
hours in the morning and afternoon. In the location, the congestion can be seen from the
queue length at each roundabout’s leg. From the preliminary survey, the long queuing
affecting the congestion is contributed by traffic flows from Kungsgatan and Sodra
Pramenaden. This project focuses on the roundabout at Idrottsparken which is influenced by
nearest intersection in Kungsgatan.
Project aim and purpose
The aim of this project is to develop, calibrate, validate and experiment the micro-simulation
model of the traffic in the roundabout at Idrottsparken so that the performance of the

survey (week 13, deadline: April, 3,

3 Data Collection Obtained data of:
- road geometry design and network
(week 14)
- Demand data, consisting of traffic
volume: traffic flow approaching
the roundabout, and turning flow(week 14)
- Calibration data using the queue
length, and validation data using
travel time (week 14 and 15)
- traffic signaling (week 14)
- Input data that related with user
behavior like reaction time are
difficult to be observed, so we use
the default data from AIMSUN.

Usage
The developed model can be used to figure the current traffic situation in the roundabout at
Idrottsparken and identify the congestion problem. It also can be proposed to improve the
roundabout performance, so that this project could be an alternative suggestion for the local
authority.
Overview of the system
The roundabout at Idrottsparken is congested during rush hours, especially in Kungsgatan and
Sodra Promenaden direction. The nearby city center brings a large number of passenger cars.
The roundabout at Idrottsparken is figured below.

Figure 2. Influence Area
The analysis focus on the roundabout only, whereas the intersection is considered in the
model because that intersection involves the roundabout congestion.
The base data needed is the roundabout, intersection and road geometry. To draw the network
geometry, we combine between the field measurement and the map digitization. The software
used is AutoCAD. The data needed include the traffic control and speed limit.

All of the data gathered from the field survey will be the input for the AIMSUN program to
be simulated in a traffic model. The built model will be calibrated and validated with the
separated data to ensure the model represent the real condition of the study area. When the
simulation model is well validated, meaning that it already represents the real traffic
conditions, the experienced problems is ready to be analyzed. Based on the problem that isfound in simulation model, we can propose a suggestion to solve the problem.
Components
The results of the project consist of:
1. Documented data collection.
2. Calibrated and validated simulation model.

condition is unlike the other two intersections which are relatively far from the
roundabout and give small effect to the roundabout.
3. Based on the preliminary survey, our group decides the data collection will beconducted during the morning and afternoon peak hours, at 07:30-08:30 AM and
16:00-17:00 PM, with the early 15 minutes warming up time.
4. The traffic signal system used for the existing condition model is fixed time control
plan signal.
5. In the traffic simulation model of AIMSUN, the calibration process will use thequeue data, while the validation process will use the travel time data. The queue and
travel time data that is calculated is queue and travel time of the vehicle in the sectionbefore they enter the roundabout.
6. The input data that are related to human behavior like reaction time and queuing
leaving speed is difficult to be gathered in the field survey, so that we use the data
from the AIMSUN default and literature.
7. In this traffic simulation and analyzes, there are no considerations or analyzes in the
sound pollution, air pollution or other environmental impacts.
General demands of the complete systemThe general demands of the system outputs or final suggestions have to fulfill some aspects asfollows:
1. The traffic simulation model has to be as good as possible represents the real trafficcondition of the study area. To achieve this, error checking, calibration and validation
have to be held.
2. The alternative improvement suggestion will be compared to the existing conditions
weather it will be better or worse.
