Surrealism in Photography

“Hot Topic”

Project Introduction

What Is Surrealism?

Surrealism- A style of art in which dreams, fantasy, and the human mind are sources of ideas for the artist.

Elements of Surrealism• Disorientation‐Odd vantage points,abnormal proportions,

levitation, enlarged details• Juxtaposition- Synonymous with contrast, two objects or texts that

oppose one another• Unexpected Juxtaposition –Things that don’t usually go together• Anatomical Surprises –Human or animal features in unnatural places• Animated Inanimate Objects –Giving life to non‐living objects• Metamorphic Creatures ‐Merging objects in to one, swapping character

traits between objects• Association of Complementaries- This Looks like something else,

identifiable shapes used in unnatural circumstances, borrowing characteristics

• Non Sequitur- Seems absurd to the point of being humorous or confusing, the use of non sequitur in humor can be deliberate or unintentional. The non sequitur can be understood as the converse of cliché.

Man Ray

• "Of course, there will always be those who look only attechnique, who ask 'how', while others of a morecurious nature will ask 'why'. Personally, I have alwayspreferred inspiration to information." – Man Ray

Jerry Uelsmann

As a 35mm Photographer Jerry Uelsmann says: “I see the incredible options that Photoshop provides, but the bottom line is the technique has to fit with ideas and images,”

Tommy Ingburg

“For me, surrealism is about trying to explain something abstract like a feeling or a thought, expressing the subconscious with a picture. So apart from the technical difficulties with shooting the pictures and putting them together in Photoshop, I find that part the hardest, trying to figure out how to create an image expressing what I want it to express.”

Logan Zillmer

“I am a conceptual photographer from the Midwest”
