ST. MICHAEL AND ALL ANGELS
CROYDON
Programme of Music2009
Dear Friends,
Welcome to our magnifi cent church and the music programme for
the year. St Michael’s Church stands fi rmly in the Catholic tradition
and has always had a fi ne reputation for the beauty and style of its
music which enriches and enhances the liturgy and architecture.
It has been said that to listen to the music in the ornate style of
Pearson’s masterpiece is to catch a glimpse of heaven to the sounds of the angelic choir.
I hope that your visit will encourage you to see the glory of God in every part of your
life and in this place hallowed by unceasing worship.
With every blessing and good wish,
Fr Donald – Parish Priest
Dear Friends,
St Michael’s has had a long and distinguished tradition of
worship and music. Previous directors of music have included Dr
George Oldroyd, Leslie Betteridge, and, more recently, Michael
Fleming, whose contribution to the synergy of music and liturgy
still resonates throughout the church.
The church is blessed with their legacy: a fi ne choir that weaves
a rich tapestry of music into the worship of the church. Their
sound is complemented by the beautiful Fr. Willis organ (1882),
described by W.L. Sumner, a noted authority on the organ,
as ‘one of the fi nest three-manual instruments in Britain and
Europe’. The organ can be heard throughout the year in the service of the liturgy, and
in the hands of eminent recitalists including Thierry Escaich, D’Arcy Trinkwon and
Olivier Latry.
I hope that you enjoy your visit to St Michael’s.
With all best wishes,
Dr Robert Sholl
Director of Music
ST. MICHAEL AND ALL ANGELS, CROYDON
Programme of Music 2009
Dear Friends,
Those of you who visited St Michaels Church early last year would have seen it clad in
scaffolding. This was to carry out much needed maintenance. As with all buildings of its
age, it needs constant attention.
During the next fi ve to ten years we will need to address not only the regular
maintenance but also repairs to the stonework, which in places is crumbling badly,
together with major work on our magnifi cent organ and its casing. This work has been
estimated at £1 million in today’s terms.
In our role as trustees of St Michaels Church, we want to ensure its continuity for
future generations as a place of worship in the centre of Croydon, together with the
music which so enriches the liturgy and spiritual life of the church.
We would welcome all donations and all proceeds from our weekly organ recitals in
2009 will go to our fund.
With best wishes,
Michael Thompson
Gloria Renner-Thomas
