Dear CYC Family,
What a great and challenging year 2016 was for Cornerstone Youth Center! With a
transition into new leadership comes change, excitement, and honestly a dose of
apprehension. Along with the Board of Directors and an amazingly dedicated staff and
volunteers, I truly believe not only did we transition successfully, but we did so while
continuing to strengthen and expand our services to youth and families in Southeast
Allen County.
My purpose as the Executive Director is to make sure that we offer a safe
environment where students have opportunities to participate in experiential learning
through each one of our programs. While there were changes made in staffing,
programming, and the award of another four years with the CCLC (21st Century
Learning Centers Program), the strongest testament I can give you on how this year
has gone is a story about the success of one of our own.
One focus question that is continually asked during visioning, planning and
programming is “How does this change a life?” If that question cannot be answered,
then it must be changed until it has an answer.
One young man who comes for our Drop In activities and special programs at night
told me “Before Cornerstone I didn’t have any friends. Since joining Cornerstone I
have made so many friends who encourage me and are there for me when I need
them. I like the staff. They know how to have fun and help me with my homework
when I need it.” At Cornerstone we strive to empower students so they can build
others up, offer educational assistance, and provide adult relationships outside of
family members. This student proves that we are reaching our goals!
Looking to the future, we are piloting a new summer program in 2017 (#CYC4LYFE)
as well as expanding to add another school-based site in the fall of 2017 (Heritage Jr
High School). As we continue to grow and find more success, we are grateful for the
continued support from our community. Without your support, we would not be able
to do this important work.
As you read this report, please remember that behind each number is a student or
a family who is being impacted through Cornerstone Youth Center and our mission to
change lives and empower youth.
Thankfully to be continued,
Sarah Deans Adams
Executive Director
