Creating Answer Key Only School Benchmarks
Principals can designate specific teachers to become Test Item Administrators for the
purpose of creating school benchmarks within SchoolNet. These requests should be
directed to Kathy Shelton for the appropriate permissions and training.
An alternative to a full blown test in IDMS SchoolNet is to create an Answer Key only test. The conditions of this type of test require that you have a “hard copy” test either from purchased
materials, personally created or created on the OAS website.
1. The paper copy of the test would be given to students and pre-printed answer sheets could
be generated through IDMS.
2. The results can then be scanned into IDMS for Item Analysis much like for district
benchmarks.
Create Your Answer Key Only Test:
1. Gather the copy of the test to be used (purchased testing materials or an OAS
test).
2. Login to IDMS SchoolNet.
3. Click on the Assessment Admin tab.
4. Click on Create.

5. Choose Option 2: Create a Test Manually.
6. Name your test: School Name(Initials) + title of test (Gr level /subj/skill)
(Could use the initials of the school such as CHES for Chapel Hill ES or PCMS
for Peachtree Charter MS. Examples: CHES Math GR 1 Geometry, PCMS ELA Gr. 7
Grammar) 7. School Benchmark is the Test Category. Select Subject/Grade level/Preferred
Standards document. 8. Click Yes for Answer Key Only. Enter the number of questions for the test
answer key. If all answers are multiple choice, place a check before that option.
You can edit the question type as you build your test.
9. Generate Test.

10. Mark the correct answer for the first question. Click Standards Lookup to
locate the appropriate standard for the test item. Select it and click Done.
Correctly created answers will generate No Alerts which means the question is
complete.
When choosing the appropriate standard, be sure you click + sign next to standards
to reveal elements under the main standard that may be what you need to select.

11. Click Return to Test Detail. This SAVES the question.
12. If you decide you want a true/false question instead of multiple choice you can
click edit item type to make the change. Do this before marking the correct
answer and selecting the standard.
13. Use the drop down arrow to select the new
question type.
14. Click Edit to begin the next question. Mark the correct answer and click on
Standards Lookup to select the standard. Click on Return to Test Detail.
Continue with all questions following the same procedures where you choose the
correct answer and select the standard.

15. Review each item to make sure the correct answer and standard have been
selected.
Each numbered question requires you select the correct answer
& choose the appropriate standard.
Making the Test Available for Your School:
16. Click Make Public when test answer key is successfully created.
17. Click Ready to Schedule (upper right corner of test). Make sure you have checked
to see if all answers are marked correctly and standards selected for EACH
question. No changes can be made after this step.
18. Click Schedule to add dates and assignments.

printed.
• End Date- last date the test should be administered.
• Score Due Date-date when all answer sheets should be scanned into
IDMS for Item Analysis.
20. Scroll down to the Assignment portion of the scheduling window. Click on Accept

in order for them to print the answer sheets for their sections.)

Things to Remember: • Naming Convention: School Level benchmark tests, either
complete tests or Answer keys only should start with your school
name or school initials and then delineate the details such as shown
here:
o Hawthorne Gr 2 Money Test
o HMS ELA Gr 6 Grammar (Henderson Middle)
o Cedar Grove MS Gr 7 Fractions
• Scheduling: Be sure to schedule your tests to begin and end on a
schedule that suits your content and/or grade level. You must
ASSIGN the test to your school and all courses that would use that
type of test, such as 8th
grade Science courses, 4th grade ELA
courses, etc.)
• Printing Answer Sheets for School Benchmark tests: Once your
tests and/or answer key only tests have been scheduled, your
individual teachers can print the answer sheets for their sections
once they login to IDMS SchoolNet. Directions for this process
can be accessed on the IDMS Resources website located at the
URL below.
• Scanning School Benchmark Answer Sheets: The scanning
process for uploading benchmark data to IDMS is detailed on the
IDMS Resources website. (Re: Using ScanIT) Teachers can scan their
class sections by following the procedures from the website.
