Who needs God? What does God
provide? Can we truly live without
faith or the church? Why does the
church so often seem not to
understand us and our needs? Barbara Stockl
explores these questions and many more in
conversation with Christoph Cardinal Schonborn.
She records the conversations in the book titled Who
Needs God? Cardinal Schonborn was the general
editor of the Catechism of the Catholic Church and
author of numerous other works.

“But Zacchaeus stood there and said to the
Lord, ‘Behold, half of my possessions, Lord, I
will give to the poor, and if I extorted
anything from anyone I shall repay it four
times over.’” — LUKE 19:8
We are all called to graciously give back to the Lord
in proportion to the blessings we have been
given. This means everyone isn’t called to give the
same amount, but is called to give equal
sacrifice. No amount is too small or
insignificant! Open your heart, how is God calling
you?

L ast Sunday’s Gospel gave us a tax
collector’s beautiful prayer to take with us
from this Jubilee Year of Mercy. Today, another
tax collector’s encounter with Jesus offers a
comforting memory to cherish, but also a
challenging mission to embrace. Zacchaeus’
short stature (see Luke 19:3) matched how
contemptible, socially and spiritually,
Zacchaeus’ religious acquaintances considered
tax collectors to be. Jesus counters that judgment
with mercy. Radical sin meets unmerited grace.
God seeks and finds the lost; a sinner’s home
becomes salvation’s house. The sinner “quickly”
welcomes salvation “with joy” (19:6), while the
righteous grumble judgmentally at God’s mercy.
Mercy challenges us, too. Like Zacchaeus, we
have been sought and found by Jesus, called by
name to welcome Jesus into our heart’s home.
Therefore, we must go forth from this Jubilee
Year of Mercy as “missionaries of mercy,”
seeking our fellow sinners with Jesus, receiving
them with joy (see 19:6) as cherished brothers
and sisters, and joyfully offering our judgment-
free hospitality as Jesus’ own “Welcome home!”

Al l Saints ’ Day Tuesday, November 1 Holyday of Obligation
On November 1 we praise God for the gift of all the saints. The saints stand out as models who
give us courage and strength to be faithful to the following Jesus Christ. We know some by
name because they have been canonized. There are countless others whom we do not know by
name. All these saints we honor today because we hope one day to join them in the heavenly
liturgy.
Pastoral Area Mass Schedule
Tuesday, November 1
8:30 a.m. — St. John the Baptist Noon — Corpus Christi 7:00 p.m. — St. John Neumann
Al l Souls ’ Day Wednesday, November 2
On November 2 we pray to God for those who have died, but have not attained heaven yet.
They are in Purgatory, where they are cleansed of anything that keeps them from entering into
the fullness of God’s joy. As Church we pray for, and so support, our brothers and sisters who
are being cleansed. In addition to our regular Mass on November 2, we celebrate a special
Evening Prayer for the Deceased, especially those who have died this past year.

MUSICIAN’S NOTES BY DOUG SCHMUTTE
T his weekend we celebrated the 31st
Sunday in Ordinary Time. It’s hard to
believe that there are only three Sundays
left in this liturgical year, as well as in
this Jubilee Year of Mercy. Yes, just when we may
have forgotten about this Year of Mercy, our
scriptures draw us back to the boundless mercy of
our God, and his only begotten son Jesus Christ.
Last week we heard the story of the Pharisee and the
tax collector who went to the temple area to pray. It
was the sinful tax collector who prayed, “God, be
merciful to me a sinner.” And it was HE who went
home justified.
This weekend we heard about another tax
collector, Zacchaeus. As I often do, I often look to
the reflections of Jerry Galipeau who writes for
World Library Publications. About this Gospel he
writes: Luke offers the touching story of Zacchaeus’
meeting with the Lord of mercy, who delivers this
chief tax collector from his hiding place in a tree. (A
tax collector would not have been safe in a crowd.)
Notice that the crowd grumbles at Jesus’ inviting
himself to Zacchaeus’s house because Zacchaeus is
a sinner. But the little man’s joy at being sought and
saved by Jesus finds expression in his generosity to
the poor and a promise of fourfold restitution.
Jesus himself states at the end of the gospel, “the
Son of Man has come to seek and save what was
lost.”
So many hymns would have been appropriate for
us to sing at Mass today. I chose two hymns that
proclaim the unending mercy of God and the
merciful mission of Jesus Christ. We began with the
hymn “The Master Came to Bring Good News.” We
sang:
The master came to bring good news, the news of
love and freedom, to heal the sick and seek the poor,
to build the peaceful kingdom. To seek the sinners
Jesus came to, live among the friendless, to show
them love that they might share the kingdom that is
endless.
Then for our recessional hymn we sang the very
familiar “There’s a Wideness in God’s Mercy,”
reaffirming the breadth of God’s mercy as we sang:
There’s a wideness in God’s mercy like the wideness
of the sea. For the love of God is broader than the
measures of the mind; And the heart of the Eternal is
most wonderfully kind. There is welcome for the
sinner, and more graces for the good; There is
mercy with the Savior, there is healing in his blood.
Over these last three weeks of this Jubilee year,
may we try to show the same abundant mercy to all
those with whom we come into contact - that
boundless mercy that Christ showed to the two tax
collectors.
May we find comfort in the final words of Christ
in today’s gospel, “The Son of Man has come to
seek and save what was lost.” All of us are lost at
some time or another, either physically or
spiritually. May we know that our Lord is always
looking for us to bring us home.
Amazing grace! How sweet the sound,
that saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found;
was blind, but now I see.
Have a great week.

Office of Christian Formation
to LOVE as
GOD LOVES
By Amanda Weickert
This past week I began training as a chaplain on
Mondays and Fridays in what is known as a Clinical
Pastoral Education (CPE) unit. A large part of this
program is learning to listen to our own feelings as
ministers and recognize how our emotions and perceived
biases can affect how we are present in a situation.
Right away I could see how my own fears of
inadequacy and my self-doubt rooted in my inexperience
were prevalent as I began to visit with residents. I often
find myself so preoccupied with what I am doing or
thinking or saying that I am not truly present in the
encounter I am presently living. I focus on things I
could do better so much I sometimes don’t end up doing
anything at all!
Working with my supervisor I am coming into the
realization that I don’t need to fix or get rid of these
emotions. Not being nervous or anxious isn’t a goal of
this program. Instead, I am learning how to work from
within my own present emotional state, no matter what
that is, and not allowing it to constrain my availability to
others.
No matter what is going on in my own heart -
whether this is anger, fear, joy, contentment, or any
other emotion - I can still be present with and journey
with others. I think this is at the heart of what
relationships are all about. No matter who we are or
what we are feeling, it is important for us to be aware
enough of ourselves so that we can be truly open to
others. I can’t really listen to someone if I try to hide
my own fears of inadequacy or refuse to acknowledge
them.
Being a good friend or spouse isn’t just about
journeying to some far off ideal of perfection we have
been taught. No matter how attractive this might seem, I
am a sister, a friend, a minister, a daughter exactly how I
am in this moment, not as I dream could be in some
static perfect future. The present moment is truly the
only gift I can give God and everyone around me - and
what a magnificent gift my open true self is, particularly
in my woundedness, in my humanity. God’s first gift to
all of us is our humanity. This week, let’s all strive to
remember that our tumultuous emotions and human
imperfections can draw us closer to each other and open
us to our imperfect brothers and sisters.
Lord, please help us to love ourselves and
everyone around us in the present moment. Thank
you for the gift of our humanity! Bless us with the
grace of knowing our gifts and limitations, and
responding in love. Amen!
Following Francis
“Every family should look to the icon of the Holy
Family of Nazareth. Its daily life had its share of
burdens and even nightmares, as when they met with
Herod’s implacable violence. This last was an
experience that, sad to say, continues to afflict the
many refugee families who in our day feel rejected
and helpless. Like the Magi, our families are invited
to contemplate the Child and his Mother, to bow
down and worship him (cf. Mt
2:11).”

Exhortation Amoris Laetitla paragraph

Junior High Ministry
This past weekend, our Junior High youth took part
in a Fall Fest with 2 other West Side parishes. It was
a great afternoon of learning about souls and saints,
while having a blast doing a cemetery scavenger
hunt, bobbing for apples, and spitting pumpkin
seeds!
This past week our Junior high youth met for a night
of ENCOUNTER. They have really enjoyed this
bible study journey they are on and are having a
great time with each other. The next ENCOUNTER
will be Wednesday, Nov. 2 at 7pm in the Youth
Ministry room.
Young Adult Ministry
This past Tuesday night, our Young Adults met for
Movie Night. We viewed a movie called Hellboy and
had great discussion afterwards about the great
messages that came from this movie. There was a
great turnout and this group looks forward to
meeting every Tuesday night at 7pm in the Youth
Ministry room. If interested, please contact Rod
Dunlap at rdunlap@stjohnsdr.org or 614-1789.
High School Ministry
This past Sunday, our high school youth gathered for
a CHOSEN NIGHT. On this night, they really
learned the importance of Mary in our faith, some
devotions to Mary, and how to tell non-Catholics
about our Blessed Mother.
Then they ate lots and lots
of chicken nuggets. If you
are in high school and wish
to join us for this program,
please contact Rod Dunlap
at rdunlap@stjohnsdr.org
or 614-1789.
