Usage1. To express a completed action.

Carmen salió anoche.

Yo fui al centro ayer.

The Preterite is used:

Some expressions that signify completed actions:

• anoche (last night)• ayer (yesterday)• la semana pasada (last week)• el año pasado (last year)• hace una hora (an hour ago)• anteayer (day before yesterday)• esta mañana (this morning)• una vez (one time) dos veces (two

times)

empezar/comenzar a (to begin)terminar/acabar de (to end/ finish)

2. To focus on the beginning or the end of an event

Empezó a llover.El estudiante terminó de tomar la prueba

The Imperfect is used :

1. To describe in the past.María tenía ojos azules.

Pepe era alto y fuerte.El muchacho se llamaba Raúl.

2. To tell time:Eran las seis y media.

Era tarde.

3. To express “was/were + . . .ing”, “used to” or “would”.

5. The Preterite and Imperfect can be used in the same sentence with the conjunction “cuando” (when).

Imperfect (existing condition) + cuando +Preterite (interrupting action)

Yo preparaba la cena cuando papá llegó a casa. I was making supper when dad got home.

Yo hacía mi tarea cuando mi amigo llamó por teléfono. I was doing my homework when a friend phoned.
