EVENTPromotionIdea! The minions are back at it again! Create buzz for your movie showing by passing out yellow balloons in your community that look just like the little stars of the movie. All you need are markers, yellow balloons, ribbon and a little helium. Don’t forget to add the date, time and location of the movie to each one.
EVENTIdea Allow guests the opportunity to craft their own Tiara or Bracelets of Submission. Give them the chance to show off their creations at a pop-up photo booth at the event. EVENTIdea Introduce guests to the adventures on the open seas with a pirate-themed movie night. Hand out red bandanas and eye patches to convert the crowd into swashbucklers, and cap off the event with a photo booth opportunity complete with piratey props like parrots, gold coins, “Ahoy Matey” speech bubbles and more.
EVENTIdea Before screening the latest installment in the “Transformers” franchise, introduce kids to robotics by either purchasing kits or putting together your own. Just make sure to have motors, AA batteries and battery packs on hand.
EVENTPromotionIdea! Design your own huge cardboard emojis to place around your park or community areas to advertise the showing. Make sure they relate to the area you’re placing them in, like swimming emojis near the community pool, pet emojis in the dog park, book emojis at the library and more. Add your movie’s location, date and time to each emoji so people have all the details.
PROGRAMMINGIdeas Halloween
At your showing, sell edible witch’s potion. Simply add chunks of dry ice to punch, like green Kool-Aid, for an impressive reaction. For entertainment, host a witch’s hat ring toss challenge by adding cones under tall witch’s hats.
Spooktacular ideas to go with your favorite Halloween flick!Play a couple rounds of musical coffins before your movie showing. Same rules as the regular game, just tape photos of coffins to the backs of chairs. Or, host a bloody Jell-O competition where participants sit in front of a bowl of red Jell-O with a cherry at the bottom, wearing vampire fangs with their hands held behind their back, to see who can get the cherry first.
Bring families in your community together by having them compete against one another in a tournament-style competition. Any games will do, or place a Halloween spin on classic games, like boo-loon pop, pumpkin bowling, candy corn relays, toilet paper mummy game and more!

PROGRAMMINGIdeas Christmas
Play a reindeer-inspired game by first splitting attendees into teams then giving them 10-15 balloons and a pair of open-toed pantyhose. One person wears the pantyhose on their head while the other team members blow up the balloons and stuff them into the hose to form antlers. The first team to stuff all the balloons wins!
A screening of a family-friendly holiday flick is the perfect way to help your community celebrate the true meaning of Christmas. You can also turn it into an opportunity to give back by organizing a toy drive for a local charity. For a fun and simple activity before the film, play pin the star on the Christmas tree.
Throw a Christmas party before the show featuring everything Santa Claus! Ask for a community volunteer to dress up as Santa for pics and Christmas list sharing. Have a cookie decorating station and serve their creations alongside some milk or hot cocoa. Or, let them craft a Santa-themed ornament to decorate their tree.

Last year, the City of Fairlawn in Ohio hosted a hugely successful Halloween movie event for their community featuring “Hocus Pocus.” To enhance the screening, the Fairlawn Parks & Recreation department provided a campfire with s’mores, popcorn, glow necklaces, black cat lollipops and witch broom necklaces. And best of all, the event was completely free. Laurie Beisecker, the park’s director, said her organization loved this event because it brought adults and children together from their city and several surrounding communities, and they are already planning to host the event again this upcoming October!

Unique fall ideas for making your movie event a success.
Christmas in the Park is an annual San José holiday tradition. For more than 30 years, the festive event has brought together people from all over the Bay Area to take part in holiday activities and celebrations. The event features more than 500 decorated Christmas trees, more than 60 musical and animated exhibits, glittering lights, holiday-themed refreshments, a 60-foot Community Giving Tree, visits with Santa and nightly entertainment. The organization added holiday movies to the event a few years ago with great success. People love them!” said Jason Minsky, Executive Director of Christmas in the Park. “We get requests and have families asking us in advance what we are showing each year. It’s very rewarding to see families huddled up together to watch holiday classics and enjoy a night of family fun.”
