Advanced Networking Initiatives

in the Mid-Atlantic Region

MAX MISSION

To bring cost-attractive, high performance, end-to-end connectivity

to the mid-Atlantic region to enable the missions of its constituent institutions

3

Brief Background & History• Founding consortium: Georgetown U., George

Washington U., U. of Maryland, Virginia Tech• 1999 had OC-3 to carry traffic to Abilene• Building partnerships with commercial sector• Evolved into a cohesive group of universities, federal

research labs, and commercial and non-profit institutions • focused on the common goal of building the most advanced

regional network in the nation

• Currently operating an OC-48 network in the DC metro area with extensions into the Baltimore area.

4

Advanced Networking Goals of MAX

• Ensure that researchers have access to the best networking infrastructure possible

• Fast, advanced services from the desktop to the backbone• Advanced services to whatever backbones evolve

• Ensure that Greater Baltimore-Washington-Virginia region is ‘visible’ on the national networking scene to be sure that the infrastructure evolves to meet future needs

• Leverage the intellectual capital in the MD-DC-VA region by providing high speed infrastructure accessible to many sizes and types of organizations

5

MAX game plan• Basic infrastructure allows customized evolution to new

technologies.• Strategy

• “Big picture” cooperative planning among institutions to incrementally create robust infrastructure. • Fiber/facilities construction where/when appropriate• Multi-institutional engineering teams• Broad based applications’ technologies/services

• Commercial partnerships to help develop new technologies and new service models.

• Leverage state and municipal infrastructure programs.• Inter-regional peering and/or transit agreements

6

Working Groups

• Management• Advise on issues related to the management and offerings of MAX• Commodity Transport• Providing Engineering Assistance

• Engineering• Advise on engineering related issues• IP Architecture and Optical Transport • Network Operations• Commodity Transport• IPv6, QoS, and Applications development and deployment

• Assessments and recommendations presented to Board of Founders for approval

7

Partnerships Extend GigaPoP Infrastructure

• Partnership with QwestLink to provide dark fiber ring within the Washington beltway• Connects Qwest PoP in DC to GWU, UMCP (MD) and ISI-

East (VA)• Developing commodity offering for MAX membership

• Partnerships with Juniper and LuxN to populate the network nodes with M160 routers and WDM switches

• Partnerships with Fibergate to provide some participant dark fiber connections to MAX

• Co-location with:• Qwest, Yipes, ATT, Verizon,

8

GigaPoP Peerings

• Extend regional resources to the consortium

• National resources accessed at high bandwidth• NIH, NLM, NASA, NSF, Smithsonian--(soon)

• National Network Peerings• Abilene, vBNS, ESnet, Supernet (soon), ATDnet(soon),

CA*NET3, STAR TAP, STAR LIGHT, APAN• NGIX

9

Where MAX connectivity is today

• OC48 to Abilene

• OC12 connection by NASA/GSFC

• OC3/Gigabit Ethernet by most participants

• DS3 by some participants

• Connectivity into Baltimore region

• Exploring dark fiber options in northern Virginia

10

Current Connectors

• University of Maryland• Georgetown University• George Washington

University• U of M, Baltimore County• NASA / GSFC• NSF• NIH• NLM• Howard Hughes Med.

Institute

• NOAA• U.S. Geological Survey• Catholic University• Univ. System of

Maryland• SURA• Kennedy Krieger Institute• NASA / ETC• UCAID• NCSA / ACCESS• Fujitsu Labs of America
