BALTIMORE (AP) —It was supposed to lookdifferent.

New players. Newschemes. New attitudes.A better product couldn’tbe promised, but a differ-ent brand of football was.Saints coach Sean Paytonspent the offseason say-ing he didn’t want to be“that team.” You know,“that team” that suffereddefensive breakdowns, made dumb mistakes, and gave up easy yards.“That team” that took thefield last season.

On Thursday, duringthe preseason openeragainst the Baltimore

Ravens at M&T BankStadium, the Saints were, sadly, “that team.” Infact, the 30-27 loss mighthave been the worst pos-sible version of “thatteam” while the starterswere on the field.

“We just have to goback to the drawing boardand fix it, make correc-tions,” cornerbackKeenan Lewis said.“We’ll be all right.”

It would take a certainbrand of optimism to findthings to highlight whenthe starters for bothteams were on the field.Maybe you could hangyour hat on fullbackAustin Johnson’s almosthurdling a guy on thesideline late in the firstquarter. On defense, youcould point to rookielinebacker Hau’oliKikaha looking good inrun support on one play.

Brandin Cooks’ touch-down on a fourth-downscreen, which was creat-ed by a Terron Armsteadblock was nice and

showed the receivermaybe developed moreability after the catch, butsome style points are lostfor it coming against thesecond-team defense.

That’s it. And if youhappened to feel goodabout those moments, injuries to cornerbacksBrandon Browner (cartedoff with a knee injuryafter Kikaha collidedwith his knee) and DelvinBreaux and linebackerDannell Ellerbe beforethe end of the first quar-ter negated the positivevibes.

Disappointment hit assoon as the curtainopened. The first drivewas 8:15 of frustration.Baltimore quarterbackJoe Flacco and runningback Lorenzo Taliaferodinked and dunked andran their way to a 7-0lead on a 16-play, 80-yard march on the game’sopening series.

The excruciating partof the drive was NewOrleans forced three

third downs and couldn’tfind an answer. On thefirst one, Flacco hit SteveSmith over the middlefor a first down. On thenext try, a third-and-7,Cam Jordan and Kyle

Williamsc r e a t e dpressureoff theleft edge,b u tF l a c c os l i p p e do u ta r o u n dthe rightc o r n e ra n d

scrambled for a 17-yardgain. He was awarded 5additional yards becauseof illegal contact.

The third one wentbetter. Dannell Ellerbestuffed Taliafero at the 1-yard line. The only issueis that he sacrificed hisbody to do it and left thefield with an injury afterthe play. The Ravens gotit right on fourth downand pounded it in for a

touchdown. Browner washurt on that one.

“We have to slow themdown,” safety KennyVaccaro said. “We haveto get off the field onthird down. We had achance to and I thinkFlacco rolled out and wefailed to execute.”

The second-teamdefense came on for thenext series and respond-ed by giving up a 45-yard touchdown passfrom Matt Schaub toMichael Campanaro. Theculprit: broken coverage.

The first-team offensedidn’t perform much bet-ter against Baltimore’sfirst-team defense. MarkIngram picked up a pairof yards, Cooks droppedthe first pass of the gameand Luke McCownwrapped things up withan incompletion. It wasthe same thing on thenext series, as theoffense went three-and-out.

Special teams also gotinto the act by having a

49-yard kick return byMarcus Murphy negatedby a Khiry Robinsonhold. The Saints were“that team.” The savinggrace is that it’s the pre-season. Perhaps thedefense would have beenbetter with Byrd anddefensive end AkiemHicks on the field. Theoffense unquestionablywould have been betterwith Brees and Spiller.

All isn’t lost becausethe first game of the pre-season went the wrongway. It’s too soon topanic. But a certain levelof concern is acceptableand understandable.Maybe it was evenunavoidable. Thursdaynight was a dud, and thatfamiliar feeling of frus-tration dominated thenight until the reservescame in and turnedthings around a little.

“This group will swimor sink on its own merit,”Payton said. “There’scertainly a lot of work todo.”

Sheppard and Fort Streets. At Sheppard and FortStreet, one line goes to theSheppard Street substa-tion, the other goes byBrookshire’s, ending at theGermantown substation.

The system was upgrad-

ed from 69 kva, or 1,000volt amps, to 115 kva trans-mission, Rolfe said.

“The old systemstopped at the steam plantat 69 kva and used to loopthe whole town,” he said.“The part between Ger-mantown and High Street, that’s the part that’s miss-ing. Back in 2001, and thisstarted before I came here, they were upgrading from

69,000 volts to 115,000volts. The reason for that isit’s more efficient.”

In 2001, a new substa-tion at East Street wasbuilt, upgraded the substa-tion at Sheppard Street, updated the substation atGermantown, and part ofthat upgrade was the newgalvanized poles, he said.

For example, a numberof years ago, as a result of a

guy wire being hit, it short-ed out the system, causingthe city of Minden to godark, but crews were ableto restore it within two orthree hours.

“When that happened,if we had the loop complet-ed, we could have openedup certain switches andclosed other switches andwe could’ve back fed,” hesaid. “Right now we can’t

do that. If we have a prob-lem (in between theincomplete portion of theloop), we can’t back feed. That’s what it’s all about.”

During budget work-shops over the summer,Rolfe discussed the publicworks budget with themayor and council mem-bers, saying instead of hav-ing $750,000 dedicated tooverlaying roads, that

money would be better

spent split it up among this

project, tree-trimming

road repair/overlay and

water hydrant upgrades

and improvements.

If passed, public works

would see roughly

$600,000 for all these proj-

ects.

four men, based on thevideo footage, appear tobe black but descriptionsof the individuals arevague. In the video, threeof the four subjects arewearing something overtheir faces, one whoappears to be wearing aveil of some sort across hismouth.

“Four guys went downto MAR-C Industries andattempted to get into oneof their smaller minivanswith no luck,” Det. KeithKing Jr. said. “They foundan econo-van and poppedthe lock off of it, took offthe ignition, cranked it upand went to the Exxon sta-tion.”

The perpetratorsbacked up to the frontdoors, he says, and two ofthem got out of the van –one with a crow bar, theother with a dolly.

“They pried the dooropen, and they went in,wrapped a chain aroundthe center of the ATMmachine and the othertwo held the door,” hesaid. “The driver took off

and ripped the ATMmachine in half, leavingthe bottom half. Theyripped the top part off. What they don’t know isit’s anchored to the floor,so they didn’t get any-thing. They wasted theirtime.”

Once they jerked thechain, it took the door offthe storefront and causedquite a bit of damage tothe brick, King said.

Three took off on foot, and the driver took off inthe van, he said. The vanwas found still running onPershing Street, and policecollected evidence fromthe van, including DNA,King said.

“Later this morning, after daylight, the van thatwas stolen from MAR-Cwas found on PershingStreet, and some residentson Pershing Street weregetting their kids ready forschool, and that’s whenthey noticed the van andthat it was still running,”Cropper said. “They hadactually run it into theback of another vehicle.”

Charges will include astolen vehicle, attemptedstolen vehicle, burglary ofa business and hit andrun.

The case is still underinvestigation, and policeare asking the public tocome forth with any infor-mation on who the sus-pects might be or if theyhave any information onthe incident. Contact theMinden Police Depart-ment at 377-1212.

operations and mainte-nance plan, air and watersampling and monitoringand post removal and sitecontrol plan.

Citizen Advisory Groupmembers asked questionsof ESI regarding safety andthe integrity of the M6.Brian Salvatore, an LSU

chemistry professor anddialogue committee mem-ber, suggested using differ-ent odors of chemicals thatcould possibly distinguishthe deterioration of the M6in the magazines. A sweetsmell would indicate thepropellant is in bettershape than if it has a soursmell.

Poe says there’s really noway to insure the integrityof the M6, because all theboxes are mixed up. They

will have to judge theintegrity of each box whenthey get ready to physicallymove it, he said.

“We lost a lot of integritywhen Explo started mixingall the boxes,” he said.“There’s really no way to doa stability test of the chem-ical makeup of the productto know if it will go badnext week. You could liter-ally sample every box andget a result that everythingis OK, and get to the next

magazine where in realitythat box is bad because Ididn’t get the grain fromthe bottom of the box. We’ve lost our ability to domonitoring of the productwhen they mixed all thelots, which is a dangerousjob for me and my team.”

He says they can do aphysical assessment of themagazine, and that’s reallyit.

Poe says he’ll take noteof chemical odors and they

will look into adding it intotheir operations and main-tenance plan.

He says based on theinformation they receivedfrom the TAV site visitreport, they plan to destroyroughly 800 pounds of M6every 20 minutes.

Minden police chiefSteve Cropper says Sgt.Ryan Barnette respondedto a call in the Fort Streetarea regarding a suspiciousperson.

“Apparently Sgt. Bar-nette saw him, got out ofhis vehicle to approachhim and the suspect fledon foot,” he said. “OfficerFirst Class Chris Hammon-tree arrived to assist, andthey were in pursuit of himon foot. As Warren wasfleeing from them, heapparently stops at onepoint and pulls a gun from

his waistband, turns andpoints it at Sgt. Barnette.”

At this time, Croppersays Warren reportedlybegan making comments“for officers to shoot him.”

“When Warren saw thesecond officer (Hammon-tree), apparently he turnedand began fleeing again onfoot,” he said. “He endedup running into a person’shouse, not belonging tohim or a relative, just to getaway from the officers.”
