imeline panel appears in a rame in he lower cenral porion o he screen when you irs

• Project panel: his is where you reain your links o your projec ’s video clips, audio iles,
graphics, images, and sequences. You can use binsolders o organize your asses.
• Media Browser: he Media Browser gives you quick access o all your asses while you edi.
Use he Media Browser o impor clips copied rom video sorage media such as P2 cards, SxScards, XDCAM disks, and DVDs. When you impor an asse, Adobe Premiere Pro leaves i in is

• Effects panel: Sandard eecs are lised in he Eecs panel and are organized ino wo main
bins: Video Eecs and Audio Eecs. Wihin each bin, Adobe Premiere Pro liss e ecs by
ype in nesed bins. Eecs are organized as Preses, Audio Eecs, Audio ransiions, Video
Eecs, and Video ransiions.
• Audio Mixer: he Audio Mixer ab allows you o adjus seings while lisening o audio racks
and viewing video racks. Each Audio Mixer rack corresponds o a rack in he imeline o he
acive sequence and displays he imeline audio racks in an audio console layou. Each rack
is labeled near he op o he Audio Mixer, and you can rename a rack by double-clicking isname. You can also use he Audio Mixer o record audio direcly ino a sequence’s racks.
• Effect Controls panel: You can use he Eec Conrols panel o change seings or a ransiion
you placed in a sequence. Seings vary rom ransiion o ransiion. Click he Eec Conrols

Par 2: Creaing a projec and cusomizing your workspace
It’s easy to get a project started in Adobe Premiere Pro.
. Launch Adobe Premiere Pro. A Welcome screen allows you o creae a new projec, browse o
a previous projec, or selec rom a lis o recen projecs.
2. Click New Projec o open he New Projec dialog box. Noe ha he General ab in he New
Projec dialog box is similar o he AudioVideo preerences window or Easy Seup dialog box
in Final Cu Pro.
3. Leave ile Sae Area, Acion Sae Area, and Video and Audio Display Forma as he deaul
setings. In he Capure Forma pull-down menu, selec a orma o capure i you’re capuring
rom ape. I no capuring rom ape, choose your desired compression ype (DVDVCPRO,
XDCAM or Apple ProRes among many ohers), audio sample size, rae, and source.
5. Name your projec a he botom o he dialog box, and hen browse o a older where you
wan your projec inormaion saved. Don’ click OK ye.
. Selec he Scrach Disks ab. Tis ab will be amiliar o Final Cu Pro users; however, Adobe
Premiere Pro gives you more conrol over he acual placemen o your les. Insead o having
muliple projecs wih muliple olders inside a Scrach Disks older, Adobe Premiere Pro allowsyou o creae your own older srucure, which makes i easier o move and archive media.
7. Using each o he our Browse butons, browse o he olders where you wan o sore he
capured media and previews, click Choose, and hen click OK.
8. he New Sequence dialog box appears. his behavior is a bi dieren han ha o Final Cu Pro
because you are asked o sar a new sequence beore going o he ediing inerace. I you
preer, you can simply click Cancel in his dialog box and ge sared as you would in Final Cu
Pro.
I you choose no o creae a new sequence a his sage, you can work on oher aspecs o he
projec such as imporing, capuring, and organizing he ooage, and hen creae a new sequence
when you’re ready o sar ediing. Adobe Premiere Pro can mix ormas in sequences and can
usually play hese sequences back wihou rendering. However, hese mixed-orma sequences will
need o be rendered beore oupu, so i is bes o designae he orma ha maches whichever
orma has he mos ooage.
To start a new sequence:
. Choose File > New > Sequence (Command+N). his brings up he same dialog box ha
ollowed he New Projec dialog box.
2. Selec a video orma rom he Available Preses lis on he le, jus as you would selec a
Sequence Prese rom he AudioVideo Seings in Final Cu Pro. Each prese has a ull descrip-
ion displayed o he righ. Revise he seings shown in he descripion using he General ab,
which is similar o he General ab in he Sequence Seings dialog box o Final Cu Pro.
3. Adobe Premiere Pro allows you o prese he number o audio and video racks ha you sar
wih and wheher he audio will be masered as mono, sereo, or 5.. (You can revise he
number o racks and masering opions laer i you wish.)
4. Click Save Prese o save his as a cusom prese or one-ouch recall on laer projecs . Name
your prese and click OK.

How to customize and save sequence settingsAdobe Premiere Pro has many dieren naive ediing sequence preses, including preses or DSLR
and RED cameras.. Each ime you click he New Sequence buon, you ypically pick rom he lis o
available opions. Bu, wha i, or example, you wan o edi naively in a dieren resoluion, rame
rae, or compression orma? You can creae your own cusom sequence prese o mach exacly
wha you need.
In his example, we’re going o creae a prese or Apple ProRes422. his will enable naive ediing
o Apple ProRes iles, and creaion o ProRes previews. his is speciic o he Mac plaorm, and
requires FCP insalled on he same sysem.
To do this, simply:
. Choose File>New>Sequence
2. Go o he General ab a he op o he new Sequence box.
3. Change he Ediing mode rom a speciic ediing mode o “Deskop.”
4. Change he imeBase o mach he rame rae you wish o edi in

. Under Video Previews, change he Preview File Forma o Quickime (Deskop)

Customizing your workspaceAs you know rom Final Cu Pro, cusomizing your workspace o i your personal syle and
worklow can really increase produciviy. he deaul workspace in Adobe Premiere Pro conains
groups o panels (such as Projec, Meadaa, and imeline) and you can cusomize a workspace by
arranging panels in he layou ha bes suis your working syle. As you rearrange panels, he oher
panels resize auomaically o i he window.
You can creae and save several cusom workspaces or dieren asks—or example, one or
ediing and one or previewing. When creaing workspaces, Adobe Premiere Pro oers more
coniguraion opions han Final Cu Pro. I also enables you o ake any window or panel o
ull-screen size simply by pressing he ilde key.
Audio, Color Correcion, Ediing, Eecs, and Mealogging workspaces are already deined whenyou irs launch Adobe Premiere Pro. However, you can cusomize hese named workspaces o
bes i your work habis—or creae new workspaces or oher asks. (he abiliy o group panels
wihin a rame means ha you can creae cusomized workspaces ha are even more lexible han
hose in Final Cu Pro.)
To customize your workspace:
Selec your desired workspace rom he Window > Workspace submenu a any ime. You can also
choose Premiere Pro > Preerences and edi oher seings in he Preerences dialog box ha

Par 3: Capuring and imporinghere are a variey o ways o impor ooage ino Adobe Premiere Pro. A hird-pary capure card
is required or all bu irewire-based deckscameras. Adobe Premiere Pro suppors many o he
same capure cards and boxes as Final Cu Pro so you likely will no need o inves in new hardware
o use Adobe Premiere Pro.
Capturing from tapehe Capure panel in Adobe Premiere Pro is very similar o he Capure window in Final Cu Pro.
To capture from tape:
. Choose File > Capure, or press F5.
2. Selec he Seings ab. In he Device Conrol secion o he ab, selec a brand and ype o
machine or camera ha you wan o conrol rom he Opions menu. his provides he bes
qualiy conrol over your FireWire camera or deck. Common cameras and decks are oen
recognized over he FireWire connecion and will auomaically be seleced.
3. (opional) Revise he seings or your capure locaions using he Seings ab.
he Adobe Premiere Pro user inerace or capuring is similar o ha in Final Cu Pro. he Capure
window includes a primary area or display o he conen being capured. Logging and Seings

There are several possible methods for capturing footage:
• o capure on-he-ly, click he record buon near he boom o he Capure window, or
press G. You can name and describe he clip jus as you would in Final Cu Pro. o sop
capure, click Sop, or press S or he Escape key as you would in Final Cu Pro.
• o capure clips “In o Ou,” se Ins and Ous wih he Se In and Se Ou buons, or press I o
mark an inpoin and O o mark an oupoin. hen capure he clip by clicking InOu in he
Capure secion o he Logging ab.
• o capure an enire ape, rewind he ape using he on-camera conrols or he rewind buon
in Adobe Premiere Pro, and hen click ape in he Capure secion o he Logging ab. I you
selec he Scene Deec checkbox beore you begin capuring an enire ape, i will subclip he
ape based on camera breaks.
Adobe Premiere Pro has a huge advanage over Final Cu Pro when i comes o ooage ha was
capured on-he-ly in he Capure panel. Adobe Premiere Pro can name hese clips aer hey’vebeen capured. In Final Cu Pro, renaming clips requires orcing he media ile o mach he new
name.
Importing footage from tapeless (file-based) camerasIn Adobe Premiere Pro, you can impor and edi clips rom nearly any ile-based media direcly
including P2, AVCHD, XDCAM, AVCCAM, DPX, and AVC-Inra as well as DSLR and RED cameras
wihou ranscoding or rewrapping. You can begin viewing and ediing sraigh rom he cards, bu
i is more eicien o copy heir conens o a hard disk beore imporing. his also improves
playback perormance, and, he imporing o clips doesn’ acually move or copy hem. I he iles

audio bi deph, audio clipping alers appear as red ick marks above and below he cenerline o

To import a Final Cut Pro sequence into Adobe Premiere Pro:
. In Final Cu Pro, selec a sequence and click File > Expor XML.
