Much has been wri#en aboutprecision shoo5ng in the worldof combat skill developmentand pistol shoo5ng in general.Perspec5ves and defini5ons ofhow and why we hit theintended target vary so greatlythat two people involved in aheated discussion regardingprecision shoo5ng may bevery parallel in their thinking, but they don’t recognize it.
Why precision shoo5ng?
Precision shoo5ng is oLen a mystery because ofconfusion about what the shooter must see to
consistently hit the target, and the meaning of "sightalignment" and "signet picture."
Sight alignment is nothing more than the front and rearsight as viewed by the eye; perfect sight alignment is thefront sight ver5cally and horizontally centered in therear sight notch. Sight picture is the target, front sight, and rear sight as viewed by the eye; perfect sight pictureis the front sight centered ver5cally and horizontally inthe rear sight notch superimposed on the desired point
of impact of the target.
3 Keys of to a successful shot:
1) Muzzle Management (poin5ng the muzzle at thetarget when the bullet exits).
2) Trigger Finger Discipline (how we release the bullettoward the target).
3) Sight Alignment (keeping the eye focus on the sightsthrough the release of the shot).
Importance of Muzzle Management:In order to have precise shots, the muzzle of the pistolmust be square with the target (horizontally centeredand perpendicular with a very slight upward angle toaccount for the gravity). Since sights act as a guide toposi5on the muzzle, the more precisely we align oursights, the closer the muzzle is squared with the face ofthe target, and the more likely the shot will be precise. The clear focus on the front sight as viewed through theslightly out of focus rear sight allows us the best chanceto posi5on the muzzle square to the target.
Trigger Finger Discipline:If you stabilize the muzzle of the pistol on the target and operate thetrigger without disturbing that stability, you will experience success.
What this boils down to is that precision sight alignment will square themuzzle (where the bullet exits the gun) on the center of the target, which our eye automa5cally finds, for a hit in the desired loca5on.
Bull’s-‐eye shooters that shoot the blank side of their target and shootbe#er groups than when they are shoo5ng the target side prove theconcept that the eye will naturally find the center of an objectconsistently. By keeping the eye focus on the sights through the releaseof the shot, the muzzle remains square with the target, and a consistentimpact point is hit again and again.
A simple and extremely effec5ve sight picture for aged-‐eye shooters (those in bi-‐focals and tri-‐focals) hasbecome a standard sight picture for shooters who aren’thappy with their present method of hiXng the targetwhere they want to. This method requires a dot on thefront sight and the widest notch available for the type ofrear sight to be used. This allows the eye to naturallycenter round objects in square openings with incredibleprecision. The pistol should be zeroed for the strike ofthe round to hit whatever the front sight dot is put on,similar to a red dot sight system. With a smooth triggerpress, the dot centered in the rear sight notch, and thedot floa5ng on the target, greater accuracy is a#ained.
By beBer understanding muzzle management, trigger fingerdiscipline, and by keeping the eye focus on the sights throughthe release of the shot, the muzzle remains square with thetarget and a consistent impact point is hit again and again.UlKmately, these keys to a successful shot will help anyshooter achieve greater accuracy.
