Pradeep Khosla

Pradeep K. Khosla is an academic computer scientistand university administrator. He is the current chancellorof the University of California, San Diego.[1] He was ap-pointed to the position by the president of the Universityof California, Mark Yudof, on May 3, 2012.[2][3] Histerm began August 1, 2012, following the resignation ofthe previous chancellor Marye Anne Fox.Prior to this, he was a computer science professor andDean of the Carnegie Institute of Technology, CarnegieMellon University's College of Engineering.[4] He wasalso the Philip and Marsha Dowd University Professorof Electrical and Computer Engineering and Roboticsat Carnegie Mellon.[5] He is also the Jury Chair for theInfosys Prize 2013 for the discipline of Engineering andComputer Science.

1 Career

Khosla received a Bachelor of Technology degree withhonors from IIT Kharagpur in 1980.[6][7] After graduat-ing, he worked in the area of real-time control with TataConsulting Engineers and Siemens until 1982.By 1986, he had received both an MS and PhD degreefrom Carnegie Mellon University, where he then becamean assistant professor. He rose through the ranks andwas appointed University Professor in 2008, which is thehighest rank attainable by a professor. He held severaladministrative and leadership positions at CMU includ-ing: Founding Director, Carnegie Mellon CyLab; Head,Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering; Di-rector, Information Networking Institute; and Found-ing Director, Institute for Complex Engineered Systems(ICES). In 2004, Khosla was appointed Dean of theCarnegie Institute of Technology, a five-year term whichwas renewed in July 2009.[8]

From January 1994 to August 1996 Khosla was on leavefrom CMU and served as Program Manager at DARPA,where he managed a $50M portfolio of programs in real-time systems, internet-enabled software infrastructure,intelligent systems, and distributed systems.Khosla also worked as a consultant to several compa-nies and venture capitalists and has served on the tech-nology advisory boards of many start-ups. Currentlyhe serves on the advisory boards for iNetworks LLC,ITU Ventures, and Alcoa CIO. He is involved with iN-etworks in raising a biotechnology fund called BioVen-tures, and is co-founder and a member of the board of

directors of Quantapoint, BioMetricore, and No FussInc. He also serves on the boards of HCL Infosystems,the Children’s Institute, the IIT Foundation, Mellon-Pitt(MPC) corporation, the Pittsburgh Tissue EngineeringInitiative (PTEI), the Doyle Center, and the PittsburghTechnology Council. In addition, he serves on the advi-sory boards of several universities and government orga-nizations. He is a member of the IT advisory commit-tee, CSIRO, Australia, ITU High Level Experts Groupfor the Global Cybersecurty Agenda (GCA), the VisitingCommittee on Advanced Technology for NIST, and theWorld Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council on In-novation. He has served on the Strategy Review Board ofthe Ministry of Science and Technology, Taiwan; Coun-cil of Deans of the Aeronautics Advisory Committee,NASA; National Research Council Board on Manufac-turing and Engineering Design; eTreasury PennsylvaniaAdvisory Board (appointed by Pennsylvania TreasurerRobin Weissman), and Senior Advisory Group for theDARPA Program on Joint Unmanned Combat Air Sys-tems.[9]

In 2012, Khosla was appointed the eighth chancellor ofthe University of California, San Diego.[10]

2 Research

Khosla’s research has resulted in three books and morethan 350 journal articles and conference and book contri-butions. His interests are multidisciplinary encompassingthe areas of internet-enabled collaborative design and dis-tributed manufacturing, collaborating autonomous sys-tems, agent-based architectures for distributed designand embedded control, software composition and recon-figurable software for real-time embedded systems, re-configurable and distributed robotic systems, integrateddesign-assembly planning systems and distributed infor-mation systems.[11]

3 Achievements

Khosla is a frequent keynote speaker at international con-ferences, and invited to participate in thought leader-ship forums organized by Fortune Magazine, AMD, theMilken Institute, the World Economic Forum, Techon-omy, and the Blouin Foundation, amongst others. Hehas also served on editorial boards of journals and bookseries. He is the recipient of several awards including

the ASEE George Westinghouse Award for Educationin 1999,[12] the Silicon-India Leadership award for Ex-cellence in Academics and Technology (2000), the W.Wallace McDowell Award from IEEE Computer Soci-ety (2001),[13] the Cyber Education Champion Awardfrom the Business Software Alliance (2007),[14] LifetimeAchievement Award of the Computers and Informationin Engineering Division of the American Society of Me-chanical Engineers (ASME) (2009),[15] and the Pan IITAcademic Excellence Award (2009). For his contribu-tions to technology and education, he has been elected asa Fellow of IEEE (1995),[16] the AmericanAssociation ofArtificial Intelligence (AAAI) (2003),[17] the AmericanAssociation for the Advancement of Science (AAAS)(2004),[18] the American Society of Mechanical Engi-neers (ASME) (2010),[19][20] andmember of the NationalAcademy of Engineering (NAE) (2006).[21] Khosla wasalso selected to join the prestigious Council on Com-petitiveness’ Technology Leadership Strategy Initiative(TLSI), a collaborative effort designed to chart the mostpromising frontiers of technology and competitive advan-tage arenas for the United States.[9]
