PSLE T-Score

S t r i v e T o S u c c e e d

What is PSLE Aggregate Score?

It is a sum of scores

What are these

scores?

Are they

raw

scores?

S t r i v e T o S u c c e e d

Raw Scores are not used as

• Different subjects have different levels of difficulty

• So are the spread of marks from the average mark, i.e. the standard deviation (spread of marks)

S t r i v e T o S u c c e e d

MEASURE OF

S P R E A D

S t r i v e T o S u c c e e d

S t r i v e T o S u c c e e d

Dolly scores 85% in both EL and MT

85%

EL

EL ave

MT

MT ave

= 80

Her performance in MT is very

close to that of other pupils

She did much better

in EL as compared to

other pupils

0 100

S t r i v e T o S u c c e e d

A need for standardisation of the raw scores

Transformed Score or T-Score

S t r i v e T o S u c c e e d

What is T-Score?

• It gives the relative position of a pupil’s performance compared to the performance of all the other pupils in that subject

• The raw mark obtained in the exam only shows how good the pupil is in that subject (not how good he is as compared to others)

S t r i v e T o S u c c e e d

How is T-Score calculated for each subject?

where

X: pupil’s mark for the subject

Y: average mark (mean) scored by all

pupils

Z: spread of marks around the average

mark (standard deviation)

Z

Y)-(X1050T +=

S t r i v e T o S u c c e e d

Example 1:

•Pupil’s mark (X) in exam = 50.0

•Average mark (Y) scored by all pupils = 68.0

•Spread of marks (Z) around the average mark (Y) = 10.0

T = 50 + 10 (50 - 68.0)

10.0= 32

S t r i v e T o S u c c e e d

Example 2:

•Pupil’s mark (X) in exam = 50.0

•Average mark (Y) scored by all pupils = 68.0

•Spread of marks (Z) around the average mark (Y) = 40.0

T = 50 + 10 (50 - 68.0)

40.0= 45.5

S t r i v e T o S u c c e e d

How is Aggregate Score calculated?

By adding the T-Scores of

the 4 subjects

S t r i v e T o S u c c e e d

The PSLE T-Score & Aggregate Score

•T-Score gives the relative position of a pupil’s performance as compared to the performance of all the other pupils in that subject

•Aggregate score is the sum of the T-scores of 4 subjects

•It’s not the raw scores of the subjects

•The purpose is to determine the relative standing of pupils as compared to their peers

•HMT is not included in calculation of T-score

S t r i v e T o S u c c e e d

Admission into Secondary 1

• 2 ways of seeking admission into Sec 1:• Sec 1 Posting Exercise

• Direct School Admission (DSA)–Sec Exercise

S t r i v e T o S u c c e e d

Secondary 1 Posting Exercise

• Conducted for all PSLE candidates immediately after the PSLE results are released (late Nov)

• Your child will be given the S1 Option Form to indicate up to 6 secondary school choices

• Submit your choices either by submitting a physical copy of the S1 Option Form or online though the Secondary One Internet System

S t r i v e T o S u c c e e d

Secondary 1 Posting Exercise

• Late Nov: Release of PSLE results

• Late Nov: Submission of Sec 1 Option

Form

• Late Dec: Release of School Posting

Results

S t r i v e T o S u c c e e d

• Based on students’ talents and achievements.• Consider both academic and non-academic areas.• Each secondary school has its own criteria for

selection. Based on the qualities, such as talent in science, music or sports, that the school would like to emphasize.

• To assess these qualities in applicants, schools may conduct tests, interviews or trials as necessary.

Direct School Admission (DSA)-Sec Exercise

Allows for a more diverse range of student achievements and talents to be recognised

S t r i v e T o S u c c e e d

Direct School Admission (DSA – Sec) Exercise
