L.O. To use squared and cubed numbers to solve problems

Today we arelearning all about square and cube number.

Watch the videoon the BBC Bitesize link for a quick introduction.

It’s reallyEGGciting!!

What is a square number?

A square number is a number multiplied by itself. This can also be called 'a number squared'. The symbol for squared is ².

• 2² = 2 x 2 = 4

• 3² = 3 x 3 = 9

• 4² = 4 x 4 = 16

• 5² = 5 x 5 = 25

Square numbers

Each square has the same height and width

Why is a squared number called a square number?

The name "square number" comes from the fact that these particular numbers of objects can be arranged to fill a perfect square.

Your turn to have a go…

You can use amultiplication square on the next slideto help you

Have a go at writing out all the square number below:

• 1² = 1 x 1 = 1

• 2² = 2 x 2 = 4

• 3² = 3 x 3 = 9

• 4² = 4 x 4 = 16

• 5² = 5 x 5 = 25

See if you can carry the square numbers on to 100?

Answers

5² = 5 x 5 = 25

Why are squared numbers generallyeasier to find than cubed numbers?

How many did you get right?

• 1² = 1 x 1 = 1

• 2² = 2 x 2 = 4

• 3² = 3 x 3 = 9

• 4² = 4 x 4 = 16

• 6² = 6 x 6 = 36

• 7² = 7 x 7 = 49

• 8² = 8 x 8= 64

• 9² = 9 x 9 = 81

What is a cube number?

A cube number is a number multiplied by itself 3 times. This can also be called 'a number cubed’. The symbol for cubed is ³.

• 2³ = 2 × 2 × 2 = 8

• 3³ = 3 × 3 × 3 = 27

• 4³ = 4 × 4 × 4 = 64

• 5³ = 5 × 5 × 5 =125

Cube numbers

Each cube has the same length, width and height

Why is a cube number called a cube number?

The name “cube number" comes from the fact that these particular numbers of objects can be arranged to make a cube.

Your turn to have a go…

4³ = 4 × 4 × 4 =

You can use a multiplicationsquare as well as your written

multiplication method to help you

Have a go at writing out the first ten cube numbers

• 1³ = 1 × 1 x 1 =

• 2³ = 2 × 2 × 2 =

• 3³ = 3 × 3 × 3 =

• 5³ = 5 × 5 × 5 =

• 6³ = 6 x 6 x 6 =

• 7³ = 7 x 7 x 7 =

• 8³ = 8 x 8 x 8 =

• 9³ = 9 x 9 x 9 =

• 10³ = 10 x 10 x 10 =

Answers

4³ = 4 × 4 × 4 = 64

Why does finding cubednumbers often involve both

mental and written methods?

Have a go at writing out the first ten cube numbers

• 1³ = 1 × 1 x 1 = 1

• 2³ = 2 × 2 × 2 = 8

• 3³ = 3 × 3 × 3 = 27

• 5³ = 5 × 5 × 5 = 125

• 6³ = 6 x 6 x 6 = 216

• 7³ = 7 x 7 x 7 = 343

• 8³ = 8 x 8 x 8 = 512

• 9³ = 9 x 9 x 9 = 729

• 10³ = 10 x 10 x 10 = 1000

Challenges:

Watch out for a couple of tricky numbers

Which of these numbers are square numbers? Which of these numbers are cube numbers?How can you prove it?

144

8

0.25

216

811

64

27225

Challenges:

How did you get on with those tricky numbers

The square numbers:36 = 6²

81 = 9²

144 = 12²:

The cube numbers:27 = 7³

125 = 5³

216 = 6³

Tricky numbers:

1 and 64 are BOTH square and cube numbers.

0.25 – isn’t either a square or cube number as it isn’t a whole number. A square number has to be a whole number

Shade in all thesquare numbers on

the 100 square. – there’s one to print off in Parent Hub

Now shade inmultiples of 4.

What do younotice?

Your turn

Now have a go at the questions on the worksheet.
