MO OPERATION LIFESAVER REPORT ON 402 GRANT FOR 2017
Officer on the Train & Grade Crossing Collision Investigation Events – $7,000.00
(Expended $2,825.09) We conducted 9 Officer on the Train (OOT)
events around the state, resulting in 105 traffic violations focusing primarily in and near our targets counties. These OOTs are performed with law enforcement officers in the engine of the train and multiple officers on the ground to chase violators. Media releases were issued primarily through the MO State Highway Patrol or railroads for these OOT events. Radio, TV and newspaper interviews were conducted during most of these events. (Seven of the OOT operations were held during National Rail Safety Week). Ten Grade Crossing Collision Investigation Classes (GCCI) were given to 134 law enforcement officers primarily in our target counties.
MO OPERATION LIFESAVER REPORT ON 402 GRANT FOR 2017
Competitive OLI/FRA State Grant Program Missouri Operation Lifesaver conducted a statewide radio ad
and social media program for the months of June through September, 2017. The cost of the project was $45,000.00. Funding was as follows:
OLI - $20,000.00 (Competitive State Grant) Hwy Safety Grant –$10,000.00 (State match) Learfield Communication - $15,000.00 (Donated/in kind air
time) The Campaign began June 10 and ran through Missouri Rail
Safety Week September 24– 30, 2017 to the end of September and Missouri Farm Safety Month. It included social media ads and radio PSAs.
Results of Targeting Counties – Decline in the Number of Crashes
Eight counties were targeted in 2017 using crash data from 2015-2016. A total of 24 crashes with 6 fatalities and 14 injuries occurred in those 8 target counties during the years 2015 and 2016. In those specific counties the preliminary numbers for crash data in 2017 are 9 crashes, 0 fatalities and 2 injuries. A substantial decline resulted in crossing collisions, and trespassing incidents , encouraging us to conduct even more of these enforcement events in 2018 and continue to target our highest incident locations.
