CURVED SURFACE AREA

OF

CYLINDER

Prepared and presented by : Malavika .k. B

WHAT IS A CYLINDER ?

• A cylinder is a closed solid that has two parallel (usually circular) bases connected by a curved surface.

• Various types of cylinders : right circular ; elliptic ; parabolic ; hyperbolic

RIGHT CIRCULAR CYLINDER

• A cylinder with the bases circular and with the axis joining the

two centres of the bases perpendicular to the

planes of the two bases. • The height ”h” is the perpendicular

distance between the bases.

• The radius ”r” of a cylinder is the radius of a base.

Curved surface area

• Curved Surface Area is nothing but the surface area of the curved part of the cylinder. Ignore the top and bottom parts,

the remaining portion is what makes the CSA.

CSA of cylinder = 𝟐𝝅𝒓𝒉

Detailed study of equation

Step 1: Split the equation into two - 2𝜋r and h. Step 2: Study the Split- (a) 2𝜋r: Circumference of the circle forming the base. (b) “h” is the height of the cylinder.

Cylinder and rectangle

• Convert the curved surface of cylinder into a flat surface and the resultant shape is a rectangle.

• The length of the rectangle is “2𝜋𝑟" 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑏𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑑𝑡ℎ 𝑖𝑠 “h”.

• Perimeter of rectangle = l x b

= 2𝜋𝑟 𝑥 h

= 2𝜋𝑟h

HENCE, CSA OF CYLINDER = 2𝝅𝒓h
