Vivien Kite, Executive Director, Australian Chicken Meat Federation Inc

C hicken meat is currently

Australian consumers’ favourite meat, and this position is expected to be further cemented over the coming year, with consumption expected to climb over 46 kg per person per annum over the course of 2016.

Growth in consumption and production somewhat exceeded forecasts over the past year, due in part to historically high prices in competing red meats which no doubt promoted a shift in Australian consumers’ buying habits towards the more competitively priced chicken and pig meats.

Whether chicken meat can capture the advantages gained over the past year in the longer term will depend on the industry’s ability to meet a number of challenges that revolve around simultaneously meeting the evolving, and increasingly complex, demands of the Australian consumer, whilst at the same time maintaining chicken meat’s position as the most affordable source of meat protein.

Demand for welfare friendly

A major challenge for the chicken meat industry is that the market is indicating that Australian consumers (or at least a significant proportion of them) want more than just an affordable and safe product – they want to feel good about the way it is produced as well.

The demand for ‘welfare friendly and assured’ chicken, in particular, is increasingly driving change in production methods, often away from those methods that were so effectively employed over the past decades to deliver the affordable, nutritious and safe product that chicken is today. While many of these changes are welcomed by the industry, they often come at a cost.

Certified (FREPA) free range is now a significant proportion of total sales – potentially making up to 20% of the market in the coming year. The very widespread adoption of the RSPCA

ACMF: The continued rise of chicken meat in an increasingly complex market

Approved Farming system over the past few years will see more than 60% (possibly as much as 70%) of chickens produced in Australia in 2016 produced according to its standards.

Wresting back control

The ACMF will over the coming year be investigating opportunities for the industry to wrest back control of its own destiny through participation in broader-focus, industry driven assurance programs.

A challenge for the industry during the coming year will be to manage some parties’ expectations that industry best practice standards for animal welfare should become national mandatory regulations, an issue which will no doubt arise and be hotly debated with governments and other stakeholders in the course of the development of new national poultry welfare standards and guidelines in 2016.

Australian consumers also want to understand, and have input into, other aspects of how their food is produced and where it has come from.

Country of Origin labelling

The introduction of new national Country of Origin labelling laws, expected to be implemented in mid-2016, will at least provide an opportunity for consumers of chicken meat to identify the origin of foods on offer and to be able to recognise that virtually all the chicken available to them has been locally grown, a fact that the ACMF’s past research has indicated is not at all well appreciated by the Australian consumer.

However, what benefit, if any, this may provide in terms of bolstering the market position or reputation of chicken meat domestically is not clear.

While the chicken meat industry is very firmly focused on the domestic market (export markets still account for less than 5% of total Australian chicken meat volume), interest from

consumers and importers in other countries in accessing Australia-produced chicken is certainly growing, and the industry is demonstrating a strong interest in exploiting these opportunities.

Unfortunately, efforts to gain access to promising export markets have been hampered by bans imposed on Australian poultry due to avian influenza in other sectors of the Australian poultry industry in recent past years – sadly, bans on Australian poultry products still remain in place in some countries almost three years after our last AI incident was resolved – and importing countries often use these incidents as opportunities to renegotiate their certification requirements for poultry meat, usually in a more restrictive manner.

Nevertheless, some progress is starting to be made with key past and potential new trading partners and we are hopeful of successfully renegotiating achievable certification arrangements with some established markets in the near future and opening up new ones in the longer term.

The industry will need to continue to work with other sectors of the poultry industry and governments to protect these hard-won gains through broader adoption throughout the sector of appropriate biosecurity practices and AI risk minimisation strategies.

Despite these challenges, I believe the prospects for the Australian chicken meat industry in 2016 are extremely bright, with the industry set to stay on its current trajectory of expansion and market growth.

“Egg producers care about: producing the highest quality, safest product; the environment; providing choice; the wellbeing of our laying hens; and feeding a growing population”

James Kellaway, Managing Director, Australian Egg Corporation Limited.

W hile 2015 provided

challenges for the egg industry that will continue in 2016, where there are challenges there are also opportunities.

It is in this positive light and motivated spirit that the Australian Egg Corporation confronts its work programs for 2016.

It is worthwhile reminding ourselves of the five core reasons why egg producers are passionate about what they do and the values they hold.

Egg producers care about: producing the highest quality, safest product; the environment; providing choice; the wellbeing of our laying hens; and feeding a growing population.

Egg producers feel responsible in fulfilling these values for the community in which they operate.

As at December 2015, egg consumption reached 225 eggs per capita, up from 218 eggs in December 2014.

Prior to the egg industry investing in egg promotions through AECL, egg consumption totalled 166 eggs per capita. In terms of retail sales, egg sales increased by 6% on 2014 levels which is up on the average annual growth trend over the last 5 years.

Within the egg category at retail, cage sales increased by 4%, barn-laid sales by 10% and free range egg sales by 8%.

Please note, retail egg sales constitute approximately 55% of the total egg market with other sales being channelled through food service outlets and processing or food manufacturing.

As a result of more eggs being consumed per person and the population growing on an average of 1.6% annually, egg production has increased by more than 4% each year over the last 5 years. Australia is now producing in excess of 13 million eggs every day.

So, who is producing these eggs?

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), there were 5,662 registered agricultural businesses who produced eggs for the year ending 30 June 2013 (latest

AECL: Egg production, a ‘sunrise’ industry

5

available data) with only 266 of them producing eggs as a primary or priority business activity or enterprise.

These businesses produced 80% of all eggs with only 5% being produced by the remaining 5,398 businesses.

Other laying hen owners make up the remaining 15% of egg production which would include small and non-registered agricultural businesses such as ‘backyard’-type owners/operators.

To this end and given current consumption trends, egg production will need to increase by approximately 130% in the next few decades or 2.3 times current production levels to satisfy future market demand.

This can only be achieved by investing in new science through research, development and extension and the adoption of technology on-farm to increase productivity.

Key role for AECL

AECL has a key role in continuing to deliver science-based solutions addressing production and through chain solution for egg producers while heightening awareness, growing demand, generating additional sales and increasing consumption of eggs both locally and in selected overseas markets.

Being the industry’s provider of marketing, research, development and through-chain extension services, AECL is investing over the longer term in a number of areas to address current industry issues and challenges.

These include: the design and implementation of the Salmonella Initiative; hen welfare advances through adoption of the Hen Welfare RD&E Plan; layer and egg quality improvements through adoption on-farm of industry-based Quality Assurance via EggCorp Assured; reducing biosecurity threats through implementation of the Biosecurity Manual and other on-farm procedures; and training through the roll-out and up-take of Certificate III VET courses in agriculture contextualised to poultry production and other training initiatives such as the poultry induction skill set course known as ‘EggStart’.

Professionally operated industry

The egg industry is not a sun setting industry but rather one that has developed a new dawn that is growing to reach high noon.

It is no longer perceived as a ‘cottage industry’ but rather one that is professionally operated and managed with sustainable growth paths and substantial capital investment responding to the needs of a hungry and varied market both in Australia and overseas.

6

Mingan Choct, CEO of Poultry CRC

T he Poultry CRC is focussing on

issues relevant to industry: approving projects ranging from storm water management to spotty liver disease; from free range enrichment to a new feed management system.

All are to deliver outcomes immediately deployable in industry.

Meanwhile, our publication output is accelerating as more and more projects are reaching completion. As at the end of October 2015, a total of 383 publications (274 journal articles and 109 conference papers) were either published or submitted for publication, far exceeding the 80 publications required under our agreement with the Commonwealth.

There is still a strong demand for internships, as our industry partners regard successful interns as a lasting legacy of the Poultry CRC, benefitting the industry for years to come.

Furthermore, we have collaborated with the NSW Department of Education to produce

Poultry CRC - Focusing on issues relevant to the industry for 2016

a series of ‘Keeping Poultry in Schools’ videos, which have been made available to all schools in Australia via YouTube and other channels.

Another resource of ours, the ‘Chicken Embryo Development’ animation, which was done as part of a grant we received from the WPSA for outreach activities, has had nearly a million hits on YouTube.

Feedback for Ideas Exchange 2015 has been very positive. Most attendees agree that the main benefit of IE is that it is neither a scientific conference nor an industry event, and provides a unique venue for the networking essential for the development of new ideas.

The Poultry CRC board made a decision in September to transition the CRC to Poultry Hub Australia, based at the University of New England.

Industry is positive about this development, as it sees Poultry Hub

Australia as a vehicle to carry on the Poultry CRC’s work and serve the Australian poultry industry into the future under the strong backing of a university that has agriculture as its core strength.

In conclusion, the Poultry CRC is on track to achieve its Commonwealth milestones ahead of time and to facilitate a smooth transition to Poultry Hub Australia by 30 June 2017.poultrydigest
