WHY MANCHESTER?
GLOBAL CHALLENGE: Every single day, 19,000 children die of easily preventable causes. Traditional development aid projects are not sufficient to tackle the scale of the problem.
MANCHESTER SOLUTION: Our research showed direct anti-poverty transfers to be a practical, politically sustainable and financially feasible means to address extreme and chronic poverty in low and middle income countries. Our findings have shaped development policy, influenced national governments and informed practice in several countries, including Uganda and Bangladesh.
GLOBAL CHALLENGE: Most cocoa is grown in West Africa by smallholder farmers, and is considered to be a “male crop”, as only 25% of recognised cocoa farmers are female. However, research shows that women actually contribute up to 45% of labour inputs, often working on their husbands’ land as unpaid family labour.
MANCHESTER SOLUTION: Mondelēz International – the owner of Cadbury - published a new strategy for promoting women’s empowerment in cocoa supply chains, which draws heavily on GDI research. Our research demonstrated that promoting women’s empowerment throughout the cocoa-chocolate supply chain is not only the “right thing” to do for gender equality, but also key for chocolate confectioners to ensure the future resilience and improved quality of cocoa production.

A STUDENT’S PERSPECTIVE
“I became interested in the School’s programme because of the opportunity
to do fieldwork in Uganda as part of the course.
I find this fascinating because it allows you to put in practice what you have learnt in class, and it is a great way to prepare for careers in
international development.”
“So far, my highlight has been a series of lectures
given by two guest-lecturers that visited us from Kenya, from
the organisation Shack/Slum Dwellers International.
It was much more exciting and engaging to be able to learn from face-to-face conversations with them, as
opposed to reading about their experiences in articles.”
