Placement: SAEONEgagasiniNode,CapeTown,SouthAfricaRegistered: EitherUniversityofCapeTown(UCT)orNelsonMandelaUniversity(NMU)Supervision: Prof.JulietHermes,Prof.ChrisReason,Prof.IsabelleAnsorgeCollaborators: Prof.LisaBeal,Dr.ShaneElipot,Prof.ArneBiastochDuration: 2yearsSalary: ThiswillbeinlinewithSAEON/NRFandSARSpoliciesDescription:The Agulhas System Climate Array (ASCA) is an array of moorings, which was partiallydeployedfromApril2015toApril2016,andfullydeployedfromApril2016toMay2018.Wearelookingforadynamicphysicaloceanographertoleadtheanalysisofthismooringdatainthe context of regional impacts to South Africa in terms of shelf dynamics, coastal rainfallpatternsandinteractionswithembaymentssuchasAlgoaBay.Theincumbentwillbeworkingwith amulti-disciplinary teamwithin SAEON andwill interact with teams at both UCT andNMU to understand the interactions of the Agulhas Current regionally. They will alsocollaboratewith scientists involvedwith ASCA from theNetherlands and theUS, andworkcloselywithotherobservational,statisticalandmodelingexperts(fromGermany).Therearealsoopportunitiestogotoseaondataacquisitioncruisesandinfluencethedirectioninwhichthesciencedevelops.The key focuswill be on publishingwork fromASCAbut the incumbentwill be able to getinvolved in other projects or set up new research projects, will have options to supervisestudentsandgainlecturingexperience.SAEONandUCTareahubforinternationalscientistsspecializinginIndianOceanandAgulhasResearchbothintermsofobservingandmodelling.Therewillbeongoingopportunitiestoworkwithvisitingglobalexperts.Ifinterested,pleasecontactProf.JulietHermes:juliet@saeon.ac.za
