1. Considering a university
2. Entry Requirements
3. Completing a UCAS application
4. Reference writing process
JC
When considering a university
First: “Does the university do my subject?”
Second: “What else is on offer?”
Third: “Realistically, will I make the grades they require?”
JC
When considering a university- Open Days
• Visit a few likely places on your shortlist.
• Plan ahead & tell the staff here of your absence in good time.
• Students should use the yellow form.
•Max of three open days in school time.
•Go with a clear set of questions needing answers.
JC
When considering a university
• Resources on line and especially UCAS website.
• Higher Ideas (replacement for HEAP online)
• The Careers Department.
• School staff, as tutors, subject teachers and Sixth Form Office, but also as graduates of a range of universities.
• Friends & family.
JC
Entry requirements
• Universities will make an offer based on; UCAS Tariff (e.g. 120 points) Exam grades (ABC) at A2 Combination of both (120 points including a B in English)
• Where universities make an offer on grades (AAB) they usually want those grades and will not accept a different combination equating to the same number of points.
• Some universities will also accept AS grades as contributing towards their points offer.
ZAF
Entry requirements
• Typical offers over 3 full A-levels.
• Institutions will include subjects and grades that they deem appropriate- they may exclude ones they do not like.
• Universities may use entry tests and interviews as part of their application process.
ZAF
Completing a UCAS application
• Students will be given plenty of guidance on completing their UCAS application.
• Guidance will begin on Post 18 Day
• It is vital that the final form is impressive in every possible respect notably the personal statement.
• Aim to be ready to complete the application close to the start of September-1st Deadline*
• It takes up to three weeks for the school to process your paperwork.
ZAF
Completing a UCAS application
• You have up to 5 choices
• Choose appropriate courses; 1 X optimistic, 3 X realistic & 1 pessimistic
• Sensible likely grades - staff ‘predict’ these initially in July & (slightly) revise them, if appropriate, in September
ZAF
The reference writing process
Student completes their UCAS application
Student completes their reference
request
Student prints off a copy of their UCAS
form and hands to SFO
Subject staff complete their
references
Tutor writes the reference
SFO check application and send
to UCAS
Tutor keeps teacher comments
ZAF
The reference writing process
• When the student has completed their UCAS application they are required to print a copy and hand into Sixth Form Office for checking
• The tutor will start writing their reference when they receive a hard copy of the UCAS form.
• The tutor has three weeks to craft their reference
• The Sixth Form Office will send the application to UCAS within one week
ZAF
Early entry• Internal entry deadline 13th September
• Personal statements begin in the summer term and must be completed by the first day back in September.
• Personal statement must be academically weighted and MUST include ‘super curricular’ – get going on it now!

• Oxbridge: is this the right uni for you? Grades = mixture of 8’s and 9’s at GCSE (at least 4 8/9 grades) AS and predicted grades which support this performance.
• Entry tests can be booked via the exams office and are available online.
• Interviews.ZAF

A gap year• A gap year offers the opportunity to gain skills and experiences, while
giving time to reflect and focus on what to do next.
• A productive gap year can be valuable on a CV – many employers/ universities value the experiences students have gained if they’ve actively managed their time, set themselves goals, and stretched themselves.
• Admissions tutors know that some students may take a little time to adjust to studying again, but many former gap year students can be more focused and responsible
SC
Deferred entry
• Deferred entry; tick a box in your UCAS application to carry an offer over to start it in the following academic year.
• If you decide you would like a ‘gap year’ after applying to university then the student needs to contact the universities directly.
• Employers / universities procedure will vary
