Through personal and professional experience, I have come to believe that there are three stages in the development of a designer. These stages may take longer or shorter to complete, and may vary according to each individual’s experiences..

THE FIRST STAGE: COPY

Our entire society is built on the premise that we duplicate what has already been done in order to learn. Ignoring current (contemporary) issues of copyright and patents, our society has developed and benefited from copying. For an aspiring designer, it means researching material they like and copying it until the techniques involved have been mastered. Of course, this does not mean claiming somebody’s work as one’s own, but simply learning through practice. This also helps to build a strong critical eye. One can argue that it confirms a designer’s style and identity through the selection of specific styles one wants to master.

THE SECOND STAGE: CREATE

Creation occurs when the aspiring designer is able to complete work with the highest level of detail without feeling the need to search for inspiration elsewhere. As he/she has repeated the same exercise over and over again, techniques have been mastered and the designer is able to produce work on his/her own. This work is original because it is produced out of one person’s mind, with a distinctive style and identity. At this stage, one may be called a designer, although he/she may lack the “freshness” to be recognized as a leader in the field of expertise. Creating does not necessarily result in production, but can be about bringing a fresh aspect to existing trends and/or styles.

THE THIRD STAGE: INNOVATE

This may be the most difficult stage to complete. To innovate, the designer needs to create something unique; something that will generate debate and eventually lead to a new style; a new way of looking at the profession. Ultimately, this means pushing design boundaries into uncharted areas.
