RegardingMontgomery College…

• Due date for the Scholars and Macklin Business Institute programs – early January, 2020

• General admission applications can be completed on a rolling basis

• Students will take the Accuplacer if the SAT score is not higher than 480 in critical reading and 530 in math or if ACT is 21 or higher or if the student has not taken the SAT or ACT

RegardingMontgomery College…

• Maryland Transfer Advantage Program (MTAP)• Students must participate in MTAP for a minimum of one semester before transferring to UMD. To

complete the program requirements and successfully transfer to Maryland, students should work closely with their community college counselor to meet the following minimum criteria:

• Complete 30 college credit hours or earn an associate’s degree from an MTAP partner community college

• Complete Fundamental Studies Academic English and Mathematics*• Earn a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or a B average from all previous institutions attended• Adherence to all admission policies in addition to the academic stipulations already listed• Submit a completed UMD transfer application by the priority deadline following the semester in

which you’ll complete all MTAP requirements• *AP/IB credits can be used to satisfy the Fundamental English & Math courses required for MTAP,

however, they will not count towards the overall 30 college credit hours required to complete MTAP or apply for transfer admissions to the University of Maryland. Original AP/IB test scores must be sent directly from the testing agency to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.

• Additionally, credits earned at another two- or four-year institution can be used to meet the MTAPrequirements, as long as the last 15 credits are completed at one of the seven participating community colleges.

SAT Subject Tests What are they and who needs to take them?

• Most colleges do not require subject tests

• May be used for admission and/or placement

• When required, most colleges ask for math and one other subject test

• Check college applications carefully for requirements!

Finish compiling the College List• Include “reach”, “target”, and “safety”

schools on the list• Consider financial cost, but do not eliminate

a school based on cost

Now….The nuts and bolts of the application Process

Please don’t panic!

We are

here to

help.

Organization is Key!

• What are the deadlines?• What are the essay requirements?• How many teacher

recommendations are needed?

Be aware of these college terms:• PRIORITY DEADLINE: Students will be considered

for every financial aid program for which they may be eligible. (University of Maryland, College Park)

• EARLY DECISION: A binding commitment. Once admitted, all other applications must be retracted.

• EARLY ACTION: Admission decisions are made by an early date.

• ROLLING: An admission decision is made as applications arrive at the college.

• DEFERRED: A decision on the application is postponed until a later time. The student may, or may not, end up on a waiting list.

A bit of application info…• MCPS does not use class rank.

Please indicate that our school system “does not rank” when asked this question on applications.

• Grading scale: MCPS uses a 4 point scale. (weighted and unweighted)

• Senior class size: 275

UsingNaviance Student:

College Search and Application Program• Update Student Profile to add parent

email. For password help, see the Registrar or CCIC.

• Students are able to see likelihood of acceptance to a college based on PHS graduates from the last several years (GPA/Test Score)

• Most college applications are submitted electronically using Naviance including Common & Coalition Applications

Steps in the electronic application process…

Step 1:• From the PHS

Counseling website, log into your Naviance, account.

Step 2: Link Your Common Application Account to Naviance

*Under Colleges I’m Applying To tab, follow instructions for Common App Matching…If not applying to any Common App Schools move to Step 3

What is the FERPA Waiver?

It is your decision to waive or not waive your right to read your recommendations.

FAMILY EDUCATIONAL RIGHTS AND PRIVACY ACT(US Department of Education: http://www2.ed.gov/policy/gen/reg/ferpa/index.html)

*Waiving your right lets colleges know that you do not intend to read your recommendations, which helps reassure colleges that the letters are candid and truthful.*Some recommenders may refuse to write a letter for you unless you waive your rights.

Step 3:From “Colleges I’m Thinking About” page, move schools to Application List: “Colleges I am applying to”

Then select your application, deadline and decision type .

Step 4: Request Teacher Recommendations through Naviance (Click “Colleges” tab, then “Home”)

Step 4 (cont) :Request recommendations from teachers 4 weeks prior to the deadline

Students should speak to their teachers prior to submitting an electronic request for a recommendation

For colleges that do not use Naviance, students must give their teachers stamped, addressed envelopes

Step 5: Meet with the Registrar (4 weeks prior to the college deadline to officially request the transcript)

• Email Registrar (Susan_A_Hornburg@mcpsmd.org) to schedule an appointment

• Bring “Transcript Request Form” and “Authorization to Release Pupil Records” to the meeting.

• Transcript fees may be paid using the online store or with check or cash

Submit applications online by the deadline

• It is the student’s responsibility to get the application in on time!

Pay attention to what documents are required by each college!

Step 6: Request SAT/ACT scoresComplete an on-line request for SAT

or ACT score reports to be sent directly to the colleges*Please note that this step can be completed at any time in the process! (Earlier is better!)
