REPUBLIKA HRVATSKA Contemporary Croatia, which gained
independence in 1991, is the
successor of the 9th century Croatian medieval prinicipalities established in the marches of
the Carolingian Empire, followed by the Kingdom of Croatia, founded in 925 by King
Tomislav. Soon after the death of the last great Croatian king, Dmitar Zvonimir, Croatia
entered into a personal union with Hungary, and in the 14th century, the throne belonged to
the French Anjou dynasty. After the Ottoman invasions in the 16th century and the loss of
large tracts of land, Croatian dignitaries elected Ferdinand Habsburg as monarch in 1527,
and the country remained within the Austrian Empire until 1918. The first half of this period
was marked by constant wars with the Ottomans and Venetian encroachment upon greater
and greater areas along the coast (Istria and Dalmatia), apart from the far south, where the
independent Dubrovnik Republic developed free trade in the Mediterranean between 1358
and 1808. After the defeat of Venice and a short period in which southern Croatia was
incorporated in Napoleon’s province of Illyria (1809–1813), all the Croatian lands were
brought together within the Habsburg Monarchy, though they were still separate entities.
They were united briefly in 1848, during the Croatian national revival. After the First World
War, Croatia became part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, which was transformed after 1945
into a Communist federation, in which Croatia was one of six republics until 1991. Although
recognised as an independent state by the international community on 15 January 1992,
Croatia was forced to defend its independence by armed struggle until 1995, when the
occupied territories were liberated. In 1992, Croatia became a member of the United Nations,
in 2009, of NATO, and on 1 July 2013, of the European Union.

LABIN
The medieval town of Labin is
situated on the hill above
Rabac. Its old name of Albona
was first mentioned in 285 AD.
The birthplace of Matthias
Flacius Illyricus, the reformer
and collaborator of Martin
Luther, it is a cultural and
administrative center today.
The rich cultural and
architectural heritage of Labin
is enlivened by number of art
ateliers and by the bustling
youth gathering in the coffee
bars scattered around the old
town. The Sculpture Park in
nearby Dubrova features over 70 forma viva stone sculptures.
After a walk through the narrow streets of the Old Town, pay a visit to the Town Museum
with its archaeological and unique in this part of Europe, a miniature coal mine. Have a look
at the Memorial collection of Matthias Flacius Illyricus, peek into the art ateliers, enjoy the
view of Rabac and Cres island from the Fortica or pop into the small, elegant shops and take
refreshments on one of the terraces of the local coffee bars. Whether to do business or just to
have a chat, these are the places where everyone meets
Labin, a picturesque town situated on a 320 meters high hill and only three kilometers from
the seaside, was inhabited already two thousand years B.G. The remnants of Kunci, one of
the settlements called the 'castellums', dating from the Bronze Age, can be found in the
vicinity of Labin. Its old Illyrian-Celtic name is Albona or Alvona and it was probably
founded by Celts in the 4th century B.C. on the ruins of the ancient city. Some historians say
it was fortified by the Illyrians in the 11th century B.C. They also say that Albona in the
Celtic language means 'a town on the hill' or 'an elevated settlement'.
Titus Livius said that Labin inhabitants were pirates. After the conflicts between the local
inhabitants and Romans, which had started in the 3rd century B.C., Istra came under the
Romans in 177 B.C. The borderline was the river Rasa. Labin and its surroundings thus
became an integral part of Illyrian, the Roman province with a high degree of independence
and authority over the nearby settlements. The oldest written document about Labin is a
relief from the 3rd century with the insertion 'RES PUBLICA ALBONESSIUM'.

RABAC
Today, Rabac is a well-known tourist
resort. By the middle of the 19th century, it
was a small fishermen village with hardly
ten houses. Due to the beautiful bay and
splendid, tame surroundings, it soon
attracted first visitors. In 1876, Richard
Francis Burton, an English writer and a
passionate traveler, was among the first
tourists who stayed in Rabac. Having seen
Rabac and other places on the Istrian coast,
he wrote a book of the same title 'The
Istrian coast', describing, among other
things, the beauties and charm of Rabac. At that time Rabac witnessed the building of the first
villas. The most well-known was the villa belonging to the Prohaska family, Czechs by
origin, who were distinguished tradesmen from Rijeka. Unfortunately, the villa was
destroyed during the Second World War, but one of the most attractive locations in Rabac
still bears the name of Prohaska.
'Quarnaro', the first hotel in Rabac, was opened on 11th June, 1889 in the house of the
Viskovic family situated close to the present 'Orlando' atelier. The hotel had only a few
rooms and a pub on the ground floor.
Kaiser, the Austrian officer, who was a regular client of that first hotel, later bought Dubrova,
an estate close to Labin. Today, Dubrova is hosting the Mediterranean Sculptors Symposium
and is becoming ever more famous for its magnificent park of sculptures.
The chronicle writers would point out yet another curiosity - at the beginning of this century
in 1907, Prince Ferdinand, the Austro-Hungarian heir to the throne, visited Rabac and was
saluted by people who had gathered in the harbor.
The inhabitants of Rabac were skilled fishermen, seamen and owners of some ten sailboats
which were either destroyed in the maelstrom of the Second World War or pushed back by
modern ships. The first larger hotel was built in the period of the Italian government in 1925
in the very center of Rabac and was called 'Trieste' -its name today is 'Primorje'. The capacity
of the hotel could not meet the ever growing demand of tourists, mainly from the northern
parts of Italy. Hence the more intensive development of private accommodation took place.
Ten years after 'Trieste', the 'Dopolavoro' hotel was built - presently the 'Jadran' restaurant.
Tourism in Istria, as well as in Rabac, began to develop during the sixties, when this small
resort, due to its natural beauty , got the flattering name of 'The Pearl of the Kvarner Bay'.
Since then, all existing hotels, apartments, camping sites and the majority of the private
houses have been built.
Among the visitors, for years now, the most numerous have been Germans and Austrians
followed by English and Italians. Rabac can accommodate in one day even 11.000 visitors,
mainly foreign, and several thousand bathers from Labin and its surroundings.

PROPOZICIJE NATJECANJA BALKAN JUNIOR 2018.
Ekipu škole sačinjavaju dva učenika. U teorijskom dijelu natjecanja svaki učenik
sudjeluje pojedinačno, dok u praktičnom dijelu natjecanja učenici rade kao tim.
Uspjeh na natjecanju vrednuje se za ekipu.
Teorijski dio natjecanja.
kalkulator. *(U slučaju kvara na opremi komisija će izraditi klasični pisani test.)
Praktični dio natjecanja. Zadatak praktičnog dijela natjecanja je ožičenje mobilnog
robota, programiranje i svladavanje staze u 4 vožnje. Mobilni robot mora biti
pripremljen prema ranije danim uputama. Programiranje mikrokontrolera izvesti u
programskom jeziku C. Praktični dio natjecanja traje 180 minuta, tj. u tom vremenu
ekipe moraju izvršiti ožičenje i programiranje mobilnog robota te uvježbati vožnje
stazom.
opisano u ranije danom zadatku.
Komisije.

BALKAN JUNIOR 2018 COMPETITION CONDITIONS
Each team consists of two students. In the theoretical part of the competition each student
competes alone, while in the practical part of the competition both students compete as a
team. Overall competition results are team results.
Theoretical part of the competition Knowledge is tested using a computer programme.* The
test consists of 50 questions and lasts for 90 minutes. Computer programme generates the
test by selecting random questions. Every correct answer brings 1 point. If there are multiple
correct answers and the student chooses one wrong answer as well, the answer will not be
correct and they will not get 1 point. During the test the student is allowed to use a pen and a
calculator. *(In case of computer malfunction, the judging commitee will provide a standard written
test.)
Practical part of the competition The practical part of the competition consists of mobile
robot wiring, programming and succesfully finishing 4 laps on the track. Mobile robot
should be assembled following the beforehand instructions. The programmimg of the
microcontrollers should be done in programming language C. The practical part of the
competition lasts for 180 minutes. During that period the teams should wire and programme
the mobile robot and practice driving on the track. The first lap for all the teams can start
before 180 minutes have elapsed. The judging commitee randomly determines the order in
which teams will compete in every lap. The dimensions of the track are 1345x2305 mm.
Electronic gate's dimensions are 300x100x250 mm. The roadblock is a wooden cube with
dimensions 100x100x100 mm. The practical part of the „Balkan karić“ competition consists of
4 laps (rounds) as described in the task provided earlier. The practical part of the competition
will be scored by the rules set in the task. Points will be won for the finishing of the lap, as
well as the time nedded to finish the lap. There are 200 points total. On the day of the
competition each team should provide their own computer, the assembled mobile robot
(Balkan karić), 5 cubes (100x100x100), a measuring instrument and all the necessary tools and
equipment.
Judging commitees Three members of the judging commitee for the theoretical part and and
three members of the judging commitee for the practical part of the competition will be
chosen randomly. In the practical part of the competition one of the members will be a host
mentor for an easier coordination of the competition.
